I love the smoke profile of a pellet grill. I enjoy using mine. That sidekick is awesome with the pizza oven!
Good to hear you like the camp chef pellet grill I love my smokepro dlx been using it everyweek since christmas and it hasn't had any issues.
I bought one of these for my dad and just assembled it yesterday. I was very impressed with the packaging and how easy it was to put together. I think their instructions leave something to be desired though.... I’m an engineer so I can understand the bolt descriptions (measurements)... this was the only thing that I have ever assembled that didn’t have a parts list or some form of identification. This in my mind could add some unnecessary difficulty. Besides that, the thing is a beast. I love the controls and the ease of use! I hope my dad loves his gift as much as I do 😂
I'm always a fan of MORE instructions, even if I don't need them, because there are times when I've definitely needed them :)
When you change out your pellets, hang you bucket from the little hook your cord is draped on. It lines the bucket up with the chute making spills less likely.
Good to know. Received mine 3 days ago and it’s the same issue. BT works good but the iOS WiFi will not hook up to grill although grill is hooked up to my network.
Glad you got that fixed, Ry. Been thinking about a pellet grill myself.
Looks like you were lucky and didn’t get the Weber smokefire. :) The side kick and all the accessories are really cool, I can’t wait to see you use the pizza oven. Excellent overview on the cooker. Have a great week!
Thanks! Yeah those SmokeFire issues are tough ones. I'd much rather deal with a bad part that needs to be replaced :)
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I was going nuts!!! Same thing happened to me and couldn’t understand why it didn’t work. Going to call Camp Chef tomorrow first thing.
I had the same problem with my WifI controller after a software update. Also the controller was set at 230 degrees with a smoke setting at 2. Adjusted with app for smoke to 8 and temp to 250 degrees. The app started showing the grill going on and off using the app. Then the grill grilled failed to connect to app. After about 15 minutes found grill running at 500 degrees and app was not able to adjust. The controller still was able to adjust the settings.
Spoke with Julie at Camp Chef with problem. After trouble shooting they are sending me a new controller out.
After seeing the issues with the new Weber Smokefire, I'm most likely going with a Camp Chef when it gets a bit closer to summer.
I cooked a pork shoulder on my Woodwind 24. Was a small piece so it only took 6.5 hours. when i was done there was almost no ash in the cup but there was ash all over the inside of the grill. The pork was directly on the grill. I did not cover the drip tray with foil. I did an initial burn in at 350 for about an hour. Am I doing something wrong?
Yeah, I’m having the same issue. I tried two different devices and they both can’t find my smoker. Hopefully, getting a new control unit will fix it!
looks like a great unit
I'm glad yours is giving you the flavor you like. I got a Traeger recently. I've done pulled pork and ribs. The convenience is amazing and results were good, but I really get very little smoke flavor even on super smoke mode. I have a newborn at home so babysitting my Weber kettle isn't an option, even though the taste is superior. I got truly 100% hickory pellets and I'm going to try adding a smoke tube this weekend.
I have the smoke tube on standby, but so far I'm happy. On this unit you can dial the smoke level from 1-10, so I may max it out one day for a test.
I have the older model woodwind, smoke tube works great. Pro tip you can mix pellets and wood chips 50/50 in smoke tube. Works like a champ
I've since tried out the smoke tube. It's been great. Thanks for the tip about wood chips. I hadn't heard that. I'm going to try it.
Great review Ryne. Thx
Thanks so much :)
Hi justin, I've been checking out the camp chef woodwind with wifi..I see you commenting on some.. does this mean we will see a review from you soon? Haha
Thanks for sharing your opinion - observations regarding this smoker. I have camp chef and thinking of getting the wifi controller and converting mine. I also have the side kick but still in the box, gotta get it installed. One of those days :)
That sidekick puts out A LOT of heat :)
Glad you got it fixed! That's the major problem with new technology, especially on cars etc.... too many things that can act up or go out. Nothing like simple and reliable stuff, I think I'll stay with a stick burner for now.
Yeah I was glad that the regular old manual controls still worked while I waited for the part :)
Thanks for giving actual cook surface dimensions! Why all manufacturers don't publish those specs seems really strange, but I guess they like to inflate the numbers by using square inches. Does anyone use that last corner square inch??
I know. I’m always looking for the dimensions and they are hidden like nuclear launch codes 😊
Technology is crazy ! Great video! Glad everything worked out!
Thanks!
Awesome video? I am in the market for a pellet grill and I am torn between the Campchef Woodwind WiFi 36 and the RecTec RT700 Bull. Love the look of both grills. Love the color screen on the Campshef PID controller and that is also has a cover. Had my heart set on a RecTec until I saw the Campchef. What do you guys all think? Which should I go for?
I'm in the same situation. Love the build quality of the rec tec, but live all the extra features and sidekick on the woodwind 36. What did you end up going with?
Hi, just checking in to see what you thought of the searing ability on the lower grate withing the cooking box itself. Everything I have seen talks about the sear box attachment, which I would most likely get, but I never see comments on the ability of moving the flame deflector for direct heat. I have never owned a pellet grill and have been doing research. Great content!
I'm planning on doing a video on that in the future, but it's best near the center from the tests I've done so far.
thanks RY I went back and watched this again(I had seen it before)I have an old Traeger and I'm thinking of upgrading(I don't taste ANT smoke flavor with any type of Traeger pellets0But before I go out any spend Muchco Dinero$$$ I bought a bag of Lumberjack&Bearmountain pellets.I've heard that may make a BIG difference.BTW with your beef clad? how were those hickory/char pellets
The charwood pellets, to me, bring more of that grill flavor. I really like them.
this was helpful, thanks. I don't get what the purpose of that hopper guard is? Isn't it much more practical to leave it out?
I think it’s just a safety thing to keep someone from shoving their hand in the auger. I removed mine.
Ry, just fired my camp chef woodwind 36 and auger is making grinding noise. I'll reach out to CC, but I was wondering if yours makes an intermittent noise, or had at one point.
Nothing more than just the fan sound of the auger turning when feeding pellets, but no grinding.
I had the same issues with android. I got a few updates and seems to work better
Camp Chef is an awesome grill and I did not get mine for free. my wifi grill control display stopped working. sent email with grill info and got a new one on its way!
Have you used the slide and grill feature. If that system works for searing why is there a need for the add on sear station.
I've tried it, and it works, but it works better near the center than out to the edges. I haven't used the sear station, but the pizza oven attachment is great. I'll be doing a video on that soon.
I have seen a Oklahoma Joe pellet grill. I think that would be the one to buy. The price is appealing as well. It doesn't have WiFi , but that isn't what a grill is for. I think grills should be simple and modular in case parts fail. I think we will have to see if any hidden problems though, and it won't be replacing my Highland either for that extra smoking TLC.
It's all about choice. Some people want that convenience, others prefer the basics :)
I just bought the smoke pro dlx and it smoke during start but then nothing after that. I have to turn it off and back on a couple of times to get some more smoke but it never lasts. Second and third time using no smoker still and now the temp won't hold and again i have to turn it off then back on a couple of times. Amy help would be great, thanks
I'd contact Camp Chef right away.
I had alot of issues with my camp chef ww pro 36, finally got it working and it has worked great but I can’t help but be skeptical about how long it’s going to be working before another issue. I’m retired so I don’t really care about the Wi-Fi aspect!
I almost bought the Weber smokefire, but I waited to see the initial launch. What a shitshow it ended up being.
I'm not in for a traeger, but I'm in for either the rec tec or the camp chef.
Any suggestion s please...
I do like the Camp Chef, but Rec Tec is solid.
Masterbuilt 560 or 1050
Great video and very informative now you know we need a pizza video of course 👍🏿🍕
Oh it'll be coming :)
Does the smoke only travel out of the chimney or is most of it leaking out of the main door?
Mostly out the chimney.
I'm having trouble deciding between Sidekick and the Sear Box. I like the griddle availability of the Sidekick but can it sear well? And anyone know if I could throw a basic ci griddle on the Sear Box? Thanks
If all you want is that searing ability I’d go for the sear box 😊
Cooking With Ry I'd say I'm leaning towards wanting the griddle more as long as I can sear (somehow) on the Sidekick. Assuming it gets hot enough I can just use a ribbed cast iron pan of some sort. Trying to cover most of the bases with one unit and the Sidekick seems to do that better. Thanks!
@@Chris-sj5fh Oh the sidekick puts out a lot of heat. I have no doubt that it will fire cast iron up for a great sear :)
Grill box for sidekick will sear well.
Get the jerky racks, best add on, I've also used them to cold smoke cheese with the a-maze-n smoke tube, and to get salmon up away from the main grate. I'm assuming they fit the model you have, I have the entry level XT that I'm going to swap the controller out with a Rec tec controller. Camp Chef should really consider making a retro fit controller for those of us that want to upgrade to having a real PID controller with WiFi without having to buy an entirely new pellet grill.
Yeah a retrofit controller would be a great idea :)
I am considering this grill. I have a timberline 850 but want this as a second grill. I see lots of reviews with the 24 but not many with the 36. What would u recommend?
If you need that extra space, I'd go for the 36. The 24 is a perfect size if you're not doing multiple briskets, etc...
Cooking With Ry I rarely do more than 1 brisket but I do make several pork butts, chicken wings and racks of ribs.
@@1966calistang The 24 can easily handle 2-3 butts on the bottom and possibly more on the top rack it they aren't huge. For ribs the longer racks, like full spares are on occasion, would be better to cut in half first from my experience on this.
After a month of waiting, We just received it and were so excited to start using it! Apparently the auger does not work. When you manually use your fingers to roll it, to move the pellets it sounds like its grinding gears. VERY FRUSTRATED to say the least. Not exactly a cheap smoker. Definitely in the motor. Any suggestions? Husband is wishing now he went with a traeger.
I'm sure Camp Chef will replace anything that's defective. That's a bummer when that happens.
@@CookingWithRy ..Yeah it is. Hopefully won't take to long to get a replacement. Excited to use it. Thank you for replying 😊
@@tammyflom1750 Did Camp Chef ever resolve your auger problem? I just had this grill delivered yesterday and put it together today. I am having auger issues with it. The design of the auger motor is terrible! It is not secured to anything, only sits on a shelf. The motor has a fan on the back of it and it moves back into the housing and then shuts off. I can move the auger back and forth with my hand with no pellets in there to get the motor away from the housing but as it turns the motor vibrates, makes a bunch of noise and moves right back into the housing and shuts off. Huge flaw on what seems to be an otherwise awesome machine. Did you keep yours or return it? thanks
In our experience, in talking to Camp Chef, they are going to eliminate the auger fan, remove the auger fan and the issues we had and the issues you are having, should be eliminated. I am in love with my smoker/ grill. Use it constantly! I chuckled while reading this to my husband because it was word for word what we experienced. Must say Camp Chef customer service was wonderful to us. If what I suggested doesn't work dont hesitate to call them. PLEASE let me know if it works.
Just watched your video on the Campchef Woodwind. How has it been performing since you have been using it? I’ve seen a video where the paint started peeling off the exterior surfaces, have you seen this? I’m in the process of choosing a pellet grill and trying to weed through all the different options. Thanks for your videos great info and really enjoy them!
I've had no problems with it since swapping out the radio. And in my area I don't have to deal with much severe weather, and I keep it covered when not being used, so I haven't seen any paint peeling on mine.
Thanks for the reply, keep up the good work and great videos!
I'm trying to make a decision on the Weber kettle that you use or the PBC. Any thoughts? It seems like there is more ways to cook on the kettle. Please help
Kettle. Not even a close decision :)
@@CookingWithRy That's what I thought, thanks for the fast response
Jim Stang I’d get a WSM before getting a PBC. But out of the two I concur, Kettle 💯. I have a WSM and Kettle and never really considered the PBC because you can hang in the WSM but it does so much more IMO.
Jim, I have a kettle, and the wide variety of foods you can crank out is unmatched at half the price. From burgers, fire-roasted vegetables to make salsa, and bbq. Kettle is the way to go. (As a side note, I've learned a lot from Ry)
Grill box for sidekick will sear well.
Question…. I assumed Wi-Fi was used to communicate between the phone app and woodwind. But I may be finding out that’s not the case, because if I go too far away I get an error it can’t find Bluetooth device. So, have I actually been communicating from phone to the smoker using BLUTOOTH, and NOT work?!?! Maybe work is just for the controller updates and such?
I lose connection sometimes depending on the strength of the Wi-Fi signal.
I love this grill. I'm on the fence because I live in a nice area but I live in a condo. ALL of our decks face the water. Worried about too much smoke. I have good neighbors, want to keep it that way. I currently have my gas grill on the deck. No complaints.
One thing I've noticed is once it goes through the startup process, about 6 minutes or so, the smoke drops off considerably unless you turn up the smoke level to something above 4 or 5. You'll definitely smell the smokiness, but I haven't had any issues with really visible smoke after that startup phase on low smoke settings.
It usually happens on every startup, which is a precise amount of time. Some of the time it mellows out before the startup completes at 6 minutes, which may be due to conditions at the time of the cook.
I have had mine 4 months. Love it. One issue since new, the display screen on the grill keeps turning off, but it is still cooking, so I have to restart the grill, sometimes quite a few times during a cook to get the screen to light up.That’s a nuisance.
That’s a warranty issue I’d think. I’d contact them.
I had given up on the phone app connecting right from the start, so I have been using the smoker manually just from the controller. Then the screen started turning itself off as I mentioned. The Camp Chef agent suggested that I delete and reinstall the app from my phone. Once I did this the phone app works perfectly and the display on the smoker doesn’t turn itself off any more. Happy days.
I've made pizza and wings and the whole system works great. Another issue I experience is grease leaking In other parts of the grill. I notice more leakage when I make two briskets.
I haven't had the grease leakage issue. That's a good excuse for me to try two briskets :)
@@terryfreeman2004 thank you. Definitely learned that after watching some more videos. Cleanup is a breeze too!
Make sure pit is level/ check drip tray, make sure it is sitting in corresponding groove
Hi Ry. Random question about the camp chef jerky racks. Are the jerky side racks now the permanent racks? If so, is it weird that they're not affixed to the side? Wobbly, etc.?
I guess you could leave them in, but they fit into specific rails that you install. I swap them out when not making jerky :)
@@CookingWithRy as in remove the stock racks and install these each time you make jerky, right?
@@kiva822 Yes. There are rails specific to the jerky racks that need to be swapped in. I suppose you could leave them in full time and just cook on them. I've seen pictures of people doing salmon and ribs right on the jerky racks.
@@CookingWithRy Thank you. Much appreciated!
never mind. Figured it out. They stay in! (for most people). Thanks!
Ry,PLEASE try Grilling steaks on the pellet grill,I've seen this done but ONLY with Added Searing Grates on top of the regular grates. On my Trager it won't sear steaks
I did a test with burgers and they were pretty good, with the best sear and heat nearest the center. I'll do some steaks soon :)
I want one RY but I cant seem to find this model here in Australia. There is some of the older models but I want o e the same as you 😭🤣 I love watching your vids, keep up your great work
I was talking to some bbq place in Sydney and he said September the wifi models come out here in Australia
The BBQ King in Silverwater Sydney has this grill for $1999 with bonus pellets ,rub & butchers paper.. Ph 02 96483333 Hope this helps you !
Did you look into getting a Yoder Smoker by chance?
I had considered a 640 among others.
Ry, what sort of temps can you achieve with the SideKick? If I want to reverse sear a nice thick steak, will the griddle get hot enough to give a nice sear? I know that Camp Chef offers the searing attachment, but if the SideKick gets hot enough, it seems more versatile. I'm about a month or two away from purchasing a Woodwind for myself, and trying to decide.
The sidekick griddle gets HOT! The burner is big and puts out a lot of BTUs. I still need to do a video using the sidekick griddle.
looking forward to seeing a pizza some time soon Ry
How far can you be away from the grill for the app to still work?
Since it connects to a WiFi network, to a server, and then to your phone, theoretically anywhere you have internet should work. I've been hundreds of feet away and still been able to see and control. I do believe the firmware updates that occasionally come through require you to be close enough for the bluetooth connection.
enjoy this channel alot and was excited to see you are enjoying your camp chef also. mine is older without the separate smoke setting but considering buying the upgrade controller. so my questions would be:
1) your rules of thumb for setting the smoke setting? maybe what you've learned experimenting with smoke vs temp swings? in your other video i saw 1-5...my first thought would be 5-10?
2) camp chef also sells charwood pellets. any interest in trying those?
3) do you think the camp chef has hot cold spots maybe for the main cook grill and then the collapsable cook grill? is it enough to strategize what you cook where?
I usually stick with about a 4 on the smoke unless I really want more, then it's 7 or 8. I've used the charwood and they work really well. There are hot spots, just like most grills. Mine tends to be in the back left. But I find if I'm doing a large cut of meat it doesn't really affect the outcome. In fact, I rarely worry about hot spots on any cooker since I've seen very little change when I try to cook with them in mind.
@@CookingWithRy awesome thank you very much. might be trying my first brisket point this weekend so tonight is about reviewing all your videos again haha.
I just found your channel searching for info about these. After this time (2 years) What are your thoughts now? And I just subscribed !
It’s been working great with no issues since this 😊
Thanks for the reply👍
How much bacon can you fit on the griddle?
I think I’ve done 12-15 slices. Probably could have crammed in more.
I was a little surprised by this video. Would not think you should have a problem this soon. Glad to hear they helped fix it right away. Smoke on👍
After searching for the similar problem online, I didn't find anyone having this issue, so it seems to me like a radio went bad in the controller. Stuff happens. How companies deal with those issues is what matters to me :)
Do you need the wifi or you can just do it manually? Asking because my Internet range sucks
I usually just control it manually 👍
@@CookingWithRy Thank you
Anyone have issues with getting alerts on two separate cell phones? Both wife and I have app. But one of gets alerts other does not. Can see information on grill just not getting alerts on both.
I've only got it set up on one phone so I can't really say. Hopefully someone has it set up like you mention.
Do you still have this grill?? I have been having major problems only 2 months in.
I do still have it and haven't had any issues since the radio problem.
I see. I’m having to return mine because the paint is peeling and rust is setting in. The temperature is also about 150 degrees too hot. Ruined several ribs before I realized I was doing everything right and it was the grill.
Is this large enough to do two 16-18 pound briskets at once?
Using the upper and lower racks I think it would work, but it might be tight.
@@CookingWithRy Thank you very much!
Have you tested to see how accurate the probes are? I'm curious to see the data on that.
Compared to my ThermoWorks Smoke the built in meat probes are +/- 2-3 F (I noticed they read a bit lower than actual temp most of the time), so not quite as accurate in my usage but useful in most applications.
@@CookingWithRy thanks for the quick response. Thats not a big difference. I've been trying to see if I should trust the built in probes or buy the signals to get a more accurate reading.
@@chico130s I personally use the ThermoWorks Smoke because I prefer the remote to having to look at my phone :)
@@CookingWithRy one more question. Can you use thermoworks probes on the camp chef?
@@chico130s I've never tried but I doubt they would be calibrated the same.
I just received this pellet grill yesterday, this morning I put it together (on saturday morning when customer service is closed of course) Once I had everything together I proceeded to feed the pellets into the auger chute. It would not work. Upon further inspection I came to realize that the electric motor on the end of the auger is not secured in any way. It just sits on top of a piece of metal, a small shelf is how I would describe it. The motor has a fan on the back of it. The motor and fan were pushed back into the back of the housing. After taking a cover off the bottom of the housing I was able to see that the motor has a lot of movement in it. I could actually push the motor towards the auger and get it to work until a load was put onto the auger which would then push the motor and fan back into the housing causing it to shut down. This is an extremely poor design flaw on one of the most critical components of what appears to be an otherwise incredible machine.
Very disappointed in this design, I don't see it holding up for long. For an $800 pellet grill this a big problem. I believe this will be returned unless Camp Chef can come up with an acceptable solution next week when they open up and I see how their customer service is.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I didn't see this on mine. Everything was fully secure. Definitely contact them because they should make it right.
@@CookingWithRy Wow! Thank you for the quick reply, I'll let you know the outcome after I contact customer service next week.
Do we really need any of this tech on a grill/bbq....just something else to go wrong?
Need? Maybe not. But some people do want convenience, which is nice sometimes.
@@CookingWithRy When it works, it's great. Problem is when you have a $$$ piece of meat on the thing, and the technology decides to take a vacation :(
any issues with grease fires?
None. This grill has a drip tray that does pretty good at diverting the grease. But I bet if I loaded it up with burgers and cranked the heat to high I could make some flame :)
@@CookingWithRy lol thanks
Been watching you for years...Thanks for the great info....Think we are sold! So glad you did not gat the Smoke Fire!
Yeah, I hope Weber gets that all worked out because I am a huge Weber fan :)
I thinking of getting camp chef or rec tec. Been scared of what hear camp chief is made of thin metal. Wont hold up long time
So far it seems pretty solid. But it's all about care. Even the best grills will malfunction or rust if you don't give them some regular maintenance.
Had one for 2 years, use almost every week. Still looks great. I keep it covered when it ain’t smokin
Had one for 2 years, use almost every week. Still looks great. I keep it covered when it ain’t smokin
What did you end up getting?
@@marquezw rt 700 rec teq
What I see a lot of are companies having it mfg’d in China and not inspecting them ...just shipping them out...sure would solve some problems for their customers up front
My sidekick wont light its brand new by the way, just unboxed it April 30 2020. Also the grill itself has stopped heating twice. Doesn't reignite to hold temp unless I shut it down an restart it. Not impressed by this expensive product
I'd give them a call if you haven't already.
Connectivity problems are much better than conflagrations!
LOL. That’s true 😊
Weber should take notes :(
Yeah that's a bad situation. And I'm a huge Weber fan.
Interesting, 3 years after i spent over $260 to upgrade to the wifi controller it die and did all possible troubleshoot and finally camp chef customer service said it's not working, buy a new one st over $260 ,smh
Did you have a problem with WiFi AND Bluetooth? BT works fine but my WiFi is very weak and rarely connects. Many other devices get a strong signal in the same location. Not my woodwind. This is nothing more than a high priced BT thermometer.
Mine was a bad bluetooth radio.
I used mine three times and now it will not turn on at all. It's been under a covered porch and their grill cover. It's not the fuse. Not impressed thus far with the quality vs cost.
Did you contact Camp Chef?
@@CookingWithRy I just noticed it yesterday when I went to put on a brisket, luckily I have a Mini Green Egg so I wasn't to bothered by it to much. I'm going to call them tomorrow, it is still in the warranty period.
@@CookingWithRy I called them today and they are sending out a new controller. At least they answer the phone and are sending out a part with no hassle which is more than I can say for most companies who think it's ok to use the -pandemic for an excuse. A+ for the service call.
@@1nkman If it's the same swap out that I did, the hardest part was getting up off the ground after installing it. LOL. There are several wires to connect but if I remember correctly it's numbered and labeled on the wiring harness.
forget all this WiFi just cook and have fun

Spent 1400 on my new camp chef 24 and not at all satisfied contacted camp chef and to date not a satisfactory answer
So uve sold one and it doesn't work and none called can help. We r going to let everyone we can what a lousy deal this turned out to b
The bigger problem is that They don't ship it to Italy 😡
I spent $700 in a Camp Chef. It lasted one year before the display flickers and then turns the grill off. This grill has been covered when it isn't being used and it's dead. A complete waste of money. I will never buy a Camp Chef again.
Sorry that happened to you. Did you reach out to them?
@@CookingWithRy No, it was died two years after I got it. I only ised ot about a year. I'm sure the warranty is over.
Def not worth $1,000. Way cheaper options out there that are just as good.
So you've used it and the cheaper ones?
I came here expecting to find a solution to the problem.... you didn't resolve it they sent you a new unit. Sorry but this was a waste of my time.
They sent a new part. That is a solution.
Is it normal for smoke to come from the seams of the lid instead of just from the chimney?
Yes. I don’t worry about leakage much 😊
