An Anatomy of Murder: Burke & Hare 1828, by Mark John Maguire

- With the possible exception of Jack the Ripper, Burke & Hare are the most infamous names in British criminal history. The murders they committed and the purposes for which they did them, have led to an endless run of "body-snatcher" horror movies. Their acts were so horrific that it comes as something of a shock to learn that justice was only partially served in this case... Their story of "The West Port Murders" in Edinburgh in 1828, provides an ethical discourse on the dangers of addiction to scientific study and exploration, at the expense of all other considerations, of humanity and morality. Ultimately it required an Act of Parliament - the Anatomy Act of 1832 - to end the terror of the "resurrectionists," and men like Dr Knox, who promoted their activities.

I so admire this narrator's quiet, relaxed, comforting voice. It almost makes this tale come across as a macabre bedtime story...assuming the listener never, ever has nightmares.
Thank you very much, Marv - this one is indeed the stuff of nightmares!
Very interesting
"When medicine ceases to be practiced in the service of people alone, when its curiosity outweighs all else and its self-regard bows to science alone, forgetting the art of healing in its favor, it becomes a monster in society." ~ Mark John Maguire
We've had no shortage of monsters in medicine. It's become rather mundane for nurses and doctors ro murder those in their care. Hospitals fearful of litigation turn a blind eye to medical shenanigans.
@@robertalpy: I'm not sure you can say that is the case for all hospitals. There are definitely those who, like paedophiles who tend to work in jobs where children are plentiful, are "monsters in medicine", and who gravitate to places like hospitals or nursing homes, where victims are plentiful, and vulnerable. I don't know that hospitals turn a blind eye to murder, however. Or are you referring to doctor-assisted suicide, a.k.a. euthanasia? I've heard that some medical boards have turned a blind eye, but I don't know if that is truth or rumour.
@Wendy Greidanus No I'm referring to when hospitals simply fire someone who statistically has double the deaths on their shift and doesn't initiate an investigation.
I'm not talking g about assisted suicide but that also is illegal and technically first degree premeditated murder.

@@Pete9Tails There are a few cases of nurses murdering patients, most recently a young nurse in England who murdered children.
I do so admire Mr. Maguire for his diction. Impeccably delivered in a melodious tempo, now that takes dedicated training as well as talent. A great performance!
Pretty sure he is an M.D.
It reminds me of the good old days when commentators and news reporters all sounded refined and cultured.

I agree! He has a voice like velvet!
When I was a little girl in England there were two elderly spinster sisters living in the village. They did not like children playing or running by their house. They would yell You had better be quiet and behave or Burke and Hare will get you, then you,ll be sorry. It terrified us.

Dr. Knox was equally guilty and I really like how you described those victims as those nobody will miss which is rather bitterly touching. I found the doctor’s writing with Burke’s blood inhumane and brutal. He was a monster ( no offense to monsters ) but people should never treat his corpse the way he did with his victims. Thanks Mark for another thrilling narration.
I can understand the disgust and contempt for Burke so treated as what his victims underwent. It is just irony - like Haman hanging rather than Mordecai (Mordecai a good man who evil Haman set up to be hung- winds up himself hung on same gallows he had built for Mordecai).
It is called Karma! Burke deserve no less than what his victims had gone through. He planned and acted all for greed aka quick money!
Many thanks, Mona - I am so glad you liked it!

Back to start criminals were brutalised in Edinburgh beggars without there permit licence badge had there hands chopped off stuck on city gate and or like petty thieves had ears pinned to Tron Church Door, even pets had to be licensed those hung drawn quarters limbs and heads placed on spikes at city gates as way of saying come here at your own risk break rules you will be harshly severely punished. Crime was rampant and were a plenty as well as dealers and there illegal activities another very famous Edinburgh was the Tax man during day thief by night Deacon Brodie who was hung on his own scaffolding he designed and or made if available watch Billy Connelly who played him it was movie in the 1990s. That is a delightful comment - and I thank you for it!
No matter how many times that I've heard these horrors, it remains to be shocking. Thank you so much, Cecilia - I am most grateful!
The 'well-respected' doctor was complicit covering up for what must have been obvious to him.
The doctor was as bad as Burke and Hare, knowing and financing the grave robbing and murders.
Yes, Dr. Knox was investigated, and caught up in the ensuing scandal, but ultimately unpunished. The book The Body Snatchers by Robert Louis Stevenson (and the movie based upon it), though a fictionalized version, touches on the involvement of the medical community notably. "They hanged Burke, they mobbed Hare, but Dr. Knox is living like a gentleman in London."
Yes absolutely!
This was the best, most detailed version of this case I've watched. Good job, Mark. Your work is captivating and well done. This is one of my new favorite channels

A very generous comment indeed - thank you, Jo!
The things people will do for money - the four poor perpetrators and the wealthy surgeon! What an absolutely appalling tale of moral corruption by all involved. Very interesting piece indeed. I thank you Mark John Maguire. I especially enjoyed your penetrating artwork.
Thank you very much indeed! Yes - it is a shocking tale, and very easy to see its appeal for horror movie makers!
Dreadful. I think I'm more outraged by Dr Knox than Burke and Hare - he instigated and encouraged the murders by telling B&H he'd give them (equivalent of) £1000 for each corpse they brought him. Then paying for fresh, warm corpses that had clearly been suffocated. Cutting off Jaimie's head and feet proves that he knew what was going on. He basically commissioned the murders. If he had called the police when the first warm, suffocated corpse was brought to him, 15 people wouldn't have been murdered. Writing with Burke's blood and turning his skin into books, card-cases etc is vile and shows what monsters these medics were. I'm surprised his skeleton remained intact... It reminds me of the Nazi doctors and scientists. Psychopaths. Lot of psychopaths in medicine. Most have a superiority complex, using "the end justifies the means" to give them carte blanche to do whatever their sick minds can dream up to other humans and the most appalling torture of animals too. "Medical error" is the third leading cause of death in the US. www.bmj.com/content/353/bmj.i2139
And Knox got away with it. Completely. Having your reputation ruined is not much of a punishment for conspiracy to murder. His colleagues and perhaps his students knew what was going on, I'm sure.
The whole story is redolent of the middle ages, not 1828. But then, medical atrocities are still going on today...

Hello again Mark - back for another gripping tale of murder and deceit ! I've often wondered about defense counsel, firstly how they can stomach taking on some of these cases and secondly, how they manage to come up with a persuasive yarn for a jury. I was quite astonished, as I listened to your summary of the defense put forward by James Moncreiff and Henry Coburn, because these professionals were so skilled that I started to think to myself...'Oh, that's quite plausible" (until I shook myself out of it). Or perhaps it was just that soothing delivery of yours as you recounted the proceedings Mark ! Fortunately, the jury didn't buy it either, at least for Burke. Of course it is a travesty that all four of them were not hung...and Knox to boot. Brilliant analysis and I am so pleased that your channel is still here for us all. Many thanks.
Thank you, Johnny - yes, some of the defence barristers leave the jury in a terrible quandary! I don't know how they can stomach defending some murderers - all murderers are not equal, of course, and some are particularly repellent. I know Marshall Hall found George Joseph Smith (Brides in the Bath) repellent and didn;t like to be in the cells with him. I guess it take a certain kind of person and also, such a person needs to be able to be convinced that their job is simply to defend a person to the very best of their ability, leaving aside all personal considerations...
Thanks, Mr Maguire for your comprehensive history and thrilling presentation of these horrific crimes! These cases remind us chronological snobs that evil acts have always been a part of our fallen human state. We should seek justice on behalf of any victim of murderous greed.
Another good retelling- thank you 👏👏

Thank you, Mr. Maguire, for a new criminal analysis. Very well done! Well worded. This shows how easily a person may slide from one wrongdoing to the next, to the next, until not winking at mass murder for profit. Your final analysis is chilling, and true: medicine indeed has become a monster in society today. When I hear of so many of the atrocious things done in the name of science . . . !
Thank you, Lane - I'm glad you like it! I had wanted to do this very old case for precisely the reason you allude to: many of the dangers that existed then exist today...
You know, I never thought I could feel any sympathy for Burke, but I really appreciate how you pointed out the culpability of the other participants and the shocking way people wrought their vengeance upon his tissues and bones. I know it was their outrage over the similar treatment of their dead that caused them to act thus, but you took me to a place where I could feel pity for his corpse just as I had always felt pity for his victims. Thank you for reminding me that he was a human being also, as chilling or as uplifting as that might be.
Thank you for your sympathetic comment - yes, I generally try to see it from the murderer's point of view also. Not to condone anything they do, but it serves no-one when people who monstrous things are turned into caricatures: it is far more interesting to see them as they are - terribly flawed human beings...
