    Would it be possible for the bike to sound like crap if the sprocket and chain is in horrible condition?

    On a winding counfry road last year, I came upon a slick on the road, slowed, and around the corner was a poor dude with an old, broken Harley sportster. Turns out his chain broke, bunched up by the output shaft sprocket, broke the trans case, puked the oil, the back tire slipped on that and he fishtailed then laid it down. That was his story. His arm was rashed, but the shirt helped him slide.
    I waited with him until friends he called arrived with a pickup to load the bike up.
    So, I am replacing my chain this weekend. I am too old to be laying a bike down.

    I lube my chain with 90 oil every 500 miles, I can't afford to much maintenance, so preventive maintenance is imperative.

    How often should I lube my chain?

    I was expecting it to be harder to notice...lol if your sprockets are that fucked up and you are having doubts about changing them then you shouldn't be riding...

    I recently got a bike, and almost everyday I get on my bike to ride it, it says my tire is flat & I go on the road, ride for about 30 mins then it says it’s not flat anymore. I was curious why it might do that?

    • @Srkcycles
      @Srkcycles  5 лет назад

      What kind of bike is it? It’s probably your tpm sensors either being affected by the cold or batteries are getting low. The fjr1300 has that issue

    • @shanercoats
      @shanercoats 5 лет назад

      Srkcycles it’s a Indian Chieftain. I know you don’t buy them anymore but it’s only the back tire not the front one. It’s been around mid 30’s here in Washington. I took it there for the “500 mile check up” and they told me it was gonna be just below $600 & I asked what they were gonna do to it then they just said check the chain, breaks, and little stuff like that. I couldn’t believe it so I looked up how to change my oil and check up on it and it only cost me $100 for all the tools and oil. I love the bike but they overcharge for a lot of things.

    I once had a chain break and it wrapped around the rear axle causing my back wheel to lock up. Luckily I was slowing down to pull in my driveway so I managed keep my bike upright.

    Nobody maintains their chain? I clean and lube mine every 500 miles per my user's manual. Didn't know I was rare in that regard.

      Same, or once a week. It's one reason I insist on a center stand on my bikes. No center stand, no sale. It makes it so much easier to do. Pull up a lawn chair, clean off the old goo, put on the new goo, and a good opportunity to inspect the bike for any deficiencies/surprises.

    Had my leg bit by a chain. I couldn't ride for like 8 weeks. Still had to replace the chain and pocket and put my chain guard back on. Don't remove your chain guard.

    Hey guys,
    I am a pastor in Eastern Europe. Happily married and recently discovered that I have a dream - a cruiser bike (Vulcan S). But could settle for less, like a Yamaha Virago 535. My wife says its to dangerous to start biking and that the money could be spent on something more useful... What do you say??

    • @Srkcycles
      @Srkcycles  5 лет назад +2

      Well there’s a lot of things I could say about this. But it boils down to motorcycles are fun and awesome and can make the boring parts of life more enjoyable and open up new opportunities. And to the response of it being dangerous. You know your life is in Gods hand. You can’t change or affect when you will die.

      If money is a concern then I wouldn't suggest it..but if you do, maybe look into a cheap project bike to start and learn. Maybe the wife will win the fight and if you have to sell it then at least it's not a big investment..wives can be tough to convince. My wife was accepting until I had a minor crash, which makes arguments for it difficult. Best of luck sir.

    One of the best purchases I made after buying my bike was a rear wheel stand. Now I can lube and clean my chain so much easier. They sell a 40$ one at harbor freight that works surprisingly well.

    You can replace just the chain once, if you do it before the sprocket teeth are more worn, more for engines with less than 100 horsepower and for speeds less than 100mph. The CanyonChasers website has some good chain maintenance info.

    • @sunsetoriginals7320
      @sunsetoriginals7320 5 лет назад +1

      You need to replace your chain and sprockets at the same time. sprockets are generally much cheaper than the chain anyway so don't mess around. You'll just screw up your expensive new chain.

      I had a customer bring in a bike for a new clutch, the frt. sprocket had no teeth, the nubs from the teeth were gone. The sprocket was perfectly round, I really should have kept & displayed it.

    Excellent advice! I’ve got a 1994 Honda 250 Nighthawk, and a 2004 Honda Shadow Spirit (shaft drive). Is there any way to change the gear ratio on a shaft driven bike?

    • @vector6977
      @vector6977 5 лет назад

      Dean Bunnell different ring and pinion sets like you would do in a car.

    • @stevemoriarity860
      @stevemoriarity860 5 лет назад

      In theory, yes. In reality the answer is no. Nobody makes different ring and pinion gears for the hundreds of different makes and models of shaft drive bikes. A set could be custom made but the cost might exceed the value of the bike itself.

    • @deanbunnell4155
      @deanbunnell4155 5 лет назад

      Thank You so much for the quick response! I had the Nighthawk since 2007, then bought the Shadow just last spring. What caught me off guard the first time I rode it (Shadow) was how “tall” the gears are! Letting go of the clutch in first gear on the Shadow is like starting off in 3rd gear on the Nighthawk. 30 MPH coming out of low, and if you drop below 60 MPH, you have to shift it out of high gear. Not complaining!!! Just took a little getting use to. I love both bikes! You fellas keep me informed, and safe! Keep the awesome videos coming, & don’t forget to keep throwing in the inspirational scriptures from time to time!
