It's weird that he mentioned the lack of save state on the thing he played on, cus I played Lego Racers on PS2 and the game just didn't have any way of saving so I had to do the same thing he did. I had a memory card, it just never saved. I might've missed some option somewhere, idk.

The sad thing is LEGO isn't too big on that in terms of video games now. They practially only contract to Traveler's Tale and they don't break from the gaming format they've specialized in that much. I don't think they've ever done a racing game under LEGO beyond small activities in the newer open-world game hubs.
I really hope at some point they do. And think of the content they could add! More tracks, older and modern characters, probably little bios to collect that tell newcomers who these older lego characters are, more fluid controls, more part customization, and multiple player! Shame it probably won’t happen any time in the foreseeable future.

I just used this stream for background noise while messing around with PS2/GameCube emulators. It was definitely a relaxing experience, like a friend/roommate nearby having his own fun while you're busy with your own work.

Years ago when i was a kid i lent my Mario Party 2 cartridge to my best friend, and i forgot about it (i thought i sold it on a store because i used to sell many of my old N64 games to get new ones back then). And a few years later i visited him and he said "hey this is yours, you gave it to me years ago and we both forgot about it!" and he returned it to me, i felt like i just got a new, free game! 😁 We still play it sometimes =]
I love how once he found the language options, he just reverted back to his native Swedish. And then made fun of the Danish afterwards lol. Seems both languages have some things in common, vocab wise, I noticed.

It's kind of like handing a kid an unplugged game controller and making the kid watch someone else play the game, while they think they are in control.

This isn't really relevant to Lego Racers, but a lot of Nintendo 64 games emulate a lot better with their Wii Virtual Console versions through Dolphin than in their native N64 format. Wii VC even has some semi-obscure ones like Pokemon Puzzle League.

The Time Trials either are not as difficult as people are making them out to be, or I had such a hard time I formed a mental block in my memory and just can’t recall how difficult they are.
In the mid 2000s they re-released Lego Island, Lego Island 2, and Lego Racers in a multipack for pc. My grandma got it for me once but it didnt have any modifications to make the games run at their correct speed on modern pcs, so they ran ultra fast and almost made me throw up. Well except for lego island 2 which was made for more modern pcs.
Oh man, I just smiled all the damn video. My dad used to rent this game for me all the time, and like Joel I just spent hours building cars. My dad loved watching me playing that game, I mean I also grow up with Turok so I think it was relaxing for him that I didn't just loved FPS games.
This game was my childhood on my old N64. Use to play this SO much. One of my classmates also had it on his playstation and his version had fancy cutscenes that the N64 did not :(
One tip with the powerups is that the varieties always spawn in their exact locations consistently, but they can be swapped with ones you're already carrying, and won't respawn the original unless a racer takes whichever powerup is on the spawnpoint. SO at times when there wasn't green power-ups, no other racer had collected the old one and thus it was replaced. This and that some tracks have less green bricks than others (the beach in particular has that issue) means that the strategy is lacking in some places. And in terms of shortcuts and course tricks, the blue shield powerups are pretty useful for avoiding some of the map hazards (like the UFO tractor beam of the lightning "turrets"). Shortcuts that need blasting open can use hte grappling hook, but as the hook tries to home in on other racers, it's only useful if you're like right in front of the shortcut door (also while the dossier on shortcuts is complicated, Joel misremembered a fair few. I don't think there even are shortcuts at all on the witch and pirate-themed courses in the 3rd/6th circuits)
Never played Racers but my two big nostalgia LEGO games were Star Wars 2 and Bionicle Heroes. If both were released on the Switch id probably buy them instantly

But everyone else wanted to play videogames instead. I'd spend all night putting together entire racing grids of cars, building tracks and pits, and creating elaborate mechanisms like clothesline pin powered ramps. And then they'd just want to play Need For Speed Underground 2 instead.

This game needs the CTR Nitro Fueled treatment. A faithful remake, but with tons of new content that celebrates the brand's history.

When I was introduced to N64 through project 64 in ‘08 this was one of the first games I had on it, good times.
I've always used Retroarch's defaults and it's worked mostly flawlessly. An alternate if you're tired of Project64's 30 second wait.
