You're right. We (the fans) think this song is about her former head of her label, Scott Borchetta.
After Taylor left the label it became a huge public dispute between her and the two managers (Scott and Scooter) where they didn't allow her to sing live her old songs because she left the label. they didn't let Taylor the opportunity to bid on her music in order to buy her masters so she can own them. instead he sold the label to one of Taylor's least favorite person Scooter Braun. and since then Taylor has been VERY VOCAL about how she feels about it.
"I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" is in regards to all the public blow ups they've had since she found out Scott sold her masters to Scooter Braun. She wasn't prepared to take it silently and went public with the issue and wrote a statement about it on her social media.
"Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave." Scott was Taylor's biggest cheerleader, having signed her when she was 14 and being one of the first people on his new label. He watched her grow up. He was like family to her.
"Cursing my name, wishing I'd stayed." The contradiction of her knowing that he is publicly throwing punches her way, but deep down he always wanted her to stay with the label but was pissed off when she decided to move on so that she could own the masters to her future work (something that he wasn't willing to offer her if she stayed with Big Machine).
"And I still talk to you, when I'm screaming at the sky." A vulnerable lyric, IMO, and I think it shows that while Taylor wishes she could just hate Scott and move on, a part of her was just deeply hurt by the betrayal she felt when he sold her music to her worst enemy.
"You wear the same jewels that I gave you
, as you bury me" - meaning he proudly have her old music (masters) that she created while he talked down about her in the media during their dispute.
""And I can go anywhere I want
, anywhere I want, just not home" to refer to the time where she looked for new labels to sign to because her old label wouldn't let her buy her music, so it means to say she can go to any label she wants but not home i.e. her old label is the place where she called home and now it's the only place she can't go.
"And when you can't sleep at night, you hear my stolen lullabies." This lyric cemented the idea of it being about Scott, because she feels like he never gave her a real chance to own her music and thus, stole them from her and he should feel guilty about that/it should keep him up at night. I remember in an interview she said that she had many conversations with Scott over the years (sometimes in tears) about her problems with Scooter, but Scott had 330 reasons to forget those problems. (referencing the $330m sale Scott got for selling off his label, 80% of revenue that Taylor accounted for BTW
Yoo! Thank you for taking the time to better help me understand the lyrics and meaning behind this. I greatly appreciate you, and your time. This is fantastic, and REALLY is so helpful. Great interpretation, and very insightful!
Wow, I loved your breakdown of the lyrics. Perfect! 👏👏👏
I love that you really broke down the lyrics I am a huge Tswift fan and I was trying to explain this to my husband. Now I will just show him your comment. Great job! I absolutely love this song it makes me really feel something deep and some pain for what she went through with that, but selfishly happy that she are an amazing song it’s probably the best in the album IMO, that and seven. I know that may be an unpopular opinion but it’s mine Andy mine alone.
@@Michelle-ev8if Thank you so much Michelle!
@@aricstro5559 ooo Very nice, I'll be getting to song #7 soon!
Taylor always in her albums puts on number 5 her most personal and vulnerable songs.
This song if for Scott Borchetta, the creator of Taylor old label. Also, fun fact: before Taylor, the label didn’t exited, Scott hear her singing on a country bar or something like that when she was 15, an offer her the opportunity to work with him. But, he told her that he yet didn’t have a record label, that her would be her first client. She obviously accepted, and there’s were all began. Without her, the label wouldn’t even be recognized today.
She didn’t want to be on Machine Records anymore because she wanted the possibility to own the music she makes. She asked for the opportunity, but he rejected it. She went knowing that he would sell her catalog to someone, but she never Imagined that he would sell it to Scotter Brown, a manager who taylor can’t stand. "I leaved knowing that I left my past on Scott hands but not my future". Scooter bullied her for year, making marketing decisions that always affected her. He is manager of kanye west and Justin bieber. Taylor said that always when she talked about him with Scott, she was crying or about to do it. "it was my worst case scenario". That’s why she says "when you can’t sleep at night, you hear my stollen lullabies". He was like a father figure to her, that’s why she is so hurt about it. Songs that she wrote crying on her bed when she was 16, music videos that she created with all of her love, an the same with her entire catalog. Now, she is at Republic records, and in this new contract she will own every records that she makes. Lover and Folklore belong to her now.
Can’t wait for see your reaction!! (Sorry if make mistakes, English is not my first language)
Mica, you're perfectly fine! Thank you for giving me more detail and background on this. It is crazy to think about how much of a business Music is today and how artists often don't even own their own music. It's so cool to now know that she owns these 2 albums. (I'm assuming "Lover" is another album of hers? If so, i've never listened to it)
@@Guitarz4Lyf Lover= August 2019
You’re right! This song is about her stollen masterpieces. If you hear the song again with the fact in your head, then you’ll understand very well how is the painful process of Taylor And her work.
@@Guitarz4Lyf you need to listen to her album Lover. If you do, please do a reaction video to the song The Man.
You actually interpreted this song pretty accurately for the most part! Good job
Thank you Eliza! I think I have you all to thank who have helped me on the other songs and given me a little better understanding on how she's writing them. I make no promises in the future though. I'm sure i'll get things wrong. lol
I think the metaphor of the "battleships sinking beneath the waves" are her masters, Taylor has stated that she intends to re-record her masters starting in November of this year. This would de-value the originals hurting those who bought her masters since her fans would end up streaming/buying the new albums owned by her over the old ones. Taylor Swift "there is nothing i do better than revenge" from her song better than revenge.
Ahhh, that would make sense. Excited for November if she drops another project!
I definitely interpreted my tears ricochet as like, the pain you tried to cause me bounces right back to you (Scott borchetta selling her masters behind her back). She had a good amount of public support with the situation and it really backfired on his image and his label, aka her tears ricocheting.
Interesting. That could make sense. I'm curious if there is more insight on his business endeavors or how they may have slowed since he betrayed her.
“Look at how my tears ricochet” means the pain you caused me doesn’t just hurt me. “You had to kill me but it killed you just the same.” We harm ourselves when we harm others. Not to mention, there usually are other people that get affected indirectly by those hurtful actions. It’s a ripple effect.
And the whole “if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake? Cursing my name, wishing I stayed…” If someone is dead to you they don’t cross your mind again. So, why is he not only showing both anger and longing but showing up wherever she is? This isn’t the actions of a person writing someone off and moving on.
Great reactions! I am so glad you recognized and pointed out the differences in the sound of each song! (It might have been on “the great american dynasty’” video that you pointed that out lol)
The same jewels she gave him theory, when she was with big Machine Records, she basically made him. She had 10x platinum records and she was the first female artist to receive a diamond-certified single and album. That is my theory.
Ahhhhh, that makes so much sense!
This song is just so fucking gooooooood. Like I always forget how amazing it is until I listen to it again. Deffo my second fav song off of the album ☺️☺️
It is so good! What's your Favorite song?
Cardigan is my fav. Literally from the first listen I was blown away!!!! This album is just consistently great. I’m usually really picky with songs and I always find I have a skip in an album but not this album. So for songs like this one and Cardigan to stand out is all the more impressive to me lmao
This was also the first song she wrote for this album. She the solo writer on it. I think the whole album has tones of the entire blowout with her old record label and even the “love triangle” gives me that feeling. Hearing “Betty” I think it’s what she would’ve liked Scott to have done, genuinely apologize to her and just not have cheated on her altogether.
Great song, great album. Great work of art all around. Thanks for reacting!
I LOVE your comments and guesses you're the only one I've seen that figured out the "stolen lullabies" lyric :))
Thank you Lucia! I greatly appreciate your kind words and support.
This is my favorite song on Folklore, it is thought to be about her relationship with her old label, namely Scott Borchetta. Haven't even seen your reaction yet but I am hype because I love this song so much.
I love it! I'm excited for us to listen to it together. Be sure to let me know what you think after watching. Hopefully you're able to help me out with some questions as well. 🙂
As a lot of people have said, this song is about her old label like you were guessing with the stolen lullabies lyric. One of the most interesting and compelling theories I saw about the specific words "look at how my tears ricochet" is that it could be a callback to one of the first hit songs she had when she signed with them, "teardrops on my guitar" - now her tears are ricocheting. I thought that was a clever take and I could see that being where her thought process was.
Yoooooo! I like that theory A LOT! I think that was probably the first song I heard by Taylor Swift.
@@Guitarz4Lyf My thought is that all the pain they caused her has rebounded like karma back onto themselves. Now they are the ones crying!
Yes!!!! You figured out!!! It’s totally about Scott Borchetta, the old owner of Big Machine (who sold the label - and her masters - to Scooter).
He was the one who signed a contract with her when she was 14 years old. The lyrics: “... and I loved you I swear I loved you till my dying day...” makes me so sad...
she wrote this one alone...
Thank you! Haha seeing ya'll's comments, I feel so proud. lol I'm like "yes! I got it right with a smile on my face." I did notice how there wasn't a shout out to anyone else for helping her with this song like the other one. Wasn't 100% sure she wrote it herself.
Thanks for your reaction omg! This is my holy trinity from the album 😍 and also why are you so hawt i-
It's my pleasure Ade! There is still much more of the album to react to as well. Stay tuned!
did i like it before i play it? yes,i did! thank you for this reaction! track 5s are always emotional 😭
It's my pleasure. Thank you for checking it out and commenting. She's had several songs that have been emotional for me
I love this song. At first listen I thought she was singing as a death women. xD After I heard about the real meaning I loved it more and more. The stolen lullabies line get me every time. I think it's amazing that at first you don't have a clue, then you get some information and everything makes sense. I think that speaks for her as a writer.
I like her so much because she writes or at least co writes all of her songs. Right from the beginning when she was so young. That's so amazing to me and makes the hole thing with her old label even worse. Having that in mind I can understand why she's so disappointed and heartbroken.
I'm glad that you'll react to the whole album. Can't wait for Invisible String, Peace and Hoax. The lakes too because it's so different from everything she's done so far.
Haha Yeah, I was unsure at first with this one as well on the meaning, but it is so beautiful, powerful, and amazing how she writes and expresses her experiences. You've got me more excited for the remainder of the album and songs I haven't touched on yet. =)
This song is about Taylor’s past record label! How Scott Borchetta betrayed Taylor by selling her masters to Scooter Brawn someone who bullied her online and humiliated her. The pain that all this has. inflicted on her.
Wow! Becky, Taylor painted this picture so beautifully in this song.
spot on
"If im dead to you why are you at the wake." You only go to a wake to mourn someone. So what she is saying is if im dead and gone to you, why are you still mourning me? Still going to my wake? Wakes are for telling old stories saying goodbye. Its a hyperbole.
'Stones' could mean 'milestones' - success through the years with Borshetta / Braun. 'Diamond' could refer to diamond certification - 10 million units sold in the U.S.
this song could be the perspective of este from no body, no crime
I really love your reaction. I’m looking forward for more. After folklore, I would suggest to react to Taylor Swift’s Reputation album. The production seems very expensive/luxurious.
Thank you Charmaine! I'll add it to my list.
Great analysis of the song. Very insightful. Thank you for sharing!
It's my pleasure. Thank you!
100%. Those lullabies are for her children (albums)
“my tears ricochet” is about her stolen lullabies and each line was taken from a song from each stolen album!!
“i didn’t have it in myself to go with grace”- Red (State of Grace)
“you’re the hero flying around saving face”- Speak Now (Superman)
“and if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?”- rep (LWYMMD/old Taylor is dead)
“cursing my name”- Fearless (The Way I Loved You)
“wishing I stayed”- 1989 (All You Had to Do Was Stay)
“look at how my tears ricochet”- Debut (Teardrops on my Guitar)
My Tears Ricochet is the 5 track... all five tracks in all her albums are the most personal songs to her and yes... this is about Big Machine Records, Scott Borchetta and of course Scooter Braun... but this song have another meaning... It's the story of a dead woman and her ex-lover... that's why she's just an amazing songwriter... she can write songs with a lot of meanings and send their messages ina a very structure, beautiful and sutil way... it's on my top 3 of this album (with Exile and Betty)
I think when she says my tears ricochet she’s referring to another metaphor it’s not literal death. I feel like it’s more of a soul death like you killed something inside of me and now you want me back for more kind of thing.
Jenny that's so good! That seems very likely and would help explain a lot here.
A little add on, I think it is like you killed something inside of me and despite doing such a horrible thing to a person, how are you at the wake, still passing hate speech about her, devaluing her ( and maybe the person is pretending he missed her...not sure about this one)..ironical behaviour indeed
Very good ,how you explain it here ! 👍😍
Thank you! 😃
Sooo handsome, and I love your take on this song.
Waiting anxiously for Mirrorball. So you can have an idea in the next one:
She said in her documentary (Miss Americana) that she thought that “Lover”, her previous Album, would be her last great success... (14 years of career).
Spoiler for Miss Americana’s Taylor: No, Lover wasn’t the last one. Folklore (a surprise and alternative album) broke streaming records, it’s already 5 weeks at number 1. First artist ever to debut #1 Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 at same time.
Uh oh!.... I just checked the list, and "Mirrorball" is next! lol You won't have to wait anxiously TOOO much longer. ;) I've never listened to her Album "Lover". Will I have to react to it after this album?
CSProductions.29 Absolutely! But don’t be surprise! Her discography is so diversified... from country to pop to alternative - but always writing amazing songs. In Miss Americana she said (and for me is totally related to Mirrorball):
"We do exist in this society where women in entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35," Taylor candidly narrated. She explained how young female artists must constantly reinvent themselves to keep working. "As I'm reaching 30, I'm like, I want to work really hard while society is still tolerating me being successful," she concluded.
If you know Taylor swift, you'll know track 5 will be the most personal song in the album.
Yes My Tears Ricochet is about Scott her old record label big machine. The song metaphor that's too deep but also reference to scott.
The saddest part of the lyrics is when she said " i can go anywhere i want, anywhere i want not just home" referring to her old record label that owned her masters then "You Hear my stolen Lullabies" but her voice disappeared before finishing the "es" part in Lullabies that hurts cause she knows she can't have her masters back. "You had to kill me but it killed you just the same" the moment Taylor left big machine it experience a lot of economic crisis. She is the reason big machine is big and still scott didn't want her to own her own hard work albums. It's kind of cruel that scott gave her a contract that says the only way for Taylor to own her albums is in every new album release she can own it one at a time. That's crazy so she left and scott let scooter buy it worth 300 Million when Taylor herself can buy it but all those 6 albums is worth more than that and scott knows it but still he throw out or in Taylor lyrics "crossing out the good years" means their good relationship is nothing and its just all business.
Kim, it's pretty crazy to see how everything has turned out as I've learned more and more about this situation. Unbelievable! Thank you for your help and support here.
I love this song!! And your interpretations are amazing!!! All her albums are different, she once said that she’ll never made an album twice🤔 and the tracks number 5 are always the most vulnerable song for Taylor
Taylor Swift
Fearless
Speak Now was the first album that she wrote alone, all the songs
Red, this was her transition from country to pop ish, and the lyrics!!!!!!
1989, this album is soo pop and good
Reputation, on this album she’s talking about when everyone canceled her, and how her reputation was so low but she found love at the end, with her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn, they’ve been together since 2016. Also some songs are about her feud with Kanye and Kim K, the production is this album is AMAZING
Lover, this album is so beautiful, it’s like a big love letter for her boyfriend
Wow so awesome, and thank you for the kind words Jabi! It's really cool for me to find out all of this background information and see how much EXTRA thought and detail was put into the work
idk if people agree but this is the best song on folklore
The wake, the death of her and Scott Borchetta's (Big Machine) relationship, she wanted to own her own music, he offered her 1 album back for every album she made (which would have been years to do) she went elsewhere (my tears ricochet) and has the rights to all her music she has produced since Lover. Then Scott turned around and sold her works to Scooter henceforth, her stolen lullabies.
Ahhh, sounds like shady crazy business! That's really cool how she created the imagery from the whole conflict.
Hey Taylor fan here! 👋🏾 I always thought the part “If I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake”Going into look at how my tears ricochet was saying, if you think about when a person tells another that “you are dead to me” what they really mean is: I want no parts of you in my life, I don’t want to see you, talk to you or engage with you at all. Then to think of that same person showing up to the wake of a funeral of the person they wanted no parts of...It’s like why are you here?! It’s almost offensive. Lol why would you come to my wake crying over my body when you wanted nothing to do with me. The idea of tears ricocheting. I think of tears falling and usually when they fall they are absorbed into the surface of whatever they fall on, but the idea of tears falling and bouncing back or bouncing all over the place, do your tears hold meaning? It’s like what’s the purpose of the tears? This situation is petty and pointless and my tears hold no weight for you; you don’t care enough to absorb and really take in why I’m hurting, you just throw them back at me or they just bounce off of you. It speaks (I believe) to the coldness and disregard for her feelings when he sold her masters.
What a great song by Taylor! Don't forget to like, favorite, share, & subscribe for more in the future! You all are awesome. Thank you! =)
You should totally react to her other stuff and make sure to always pay attention for the lyrics!
Love your reactions!!
Thank you Giovanna! Other album reactions just like this?
@@Guitarz4Lyf yep! React to Either reputation first or speak now
This song is about Scott Borchetta .. owner of her former Record Label that sold Taylor Swift’s masters to the man (Scooter Braun) who had constantly tried to bring her down in the past. The emotions of this song is portraying how she is sad about it about how could he do that to her when SHE has helped the label shine and has a name. Thats why it is “My Tears Ricochet” because when he betrayed Taylor, its like betraying to himself, betraying the hardwork they have done and so whenever Taylor cries, the tears should flow out of Scott’s eyes..Very painful song... you should proceed in listening to Mad Woman after this..which is about Scooter Braun
That's crazy how that happened! Thank you for helping me better understand. =)
CSProductions.29 anytime boo 😳🥺
Will you be reacting to her Disney plus documentary recently? Really great.
Hey just a suggestion but I’d say Marcus King Band is one you might like. Wildflowers and wine or their cover of “this old cowboy” are both amazing (they’re not country-more of a blues feel).
I love it! I'll add them to my list to check out. Thank you!
This song is a eulogy for her relationship with Scott Borchetta.
I didn't realize that Carla. Thanks! =)
Nice 🎶🎵🌻
Thank you Tanya!
I’ve been watching your reactions you’re so good, you should react Betty is one of songs of the love triangle, the James’s perspective.
Thank you Natalia I greatly appreciate it. I'm trying to understand it properly not knowing everything going on. =) I am going through this entire album so I will get to Betty very soon. Stay tuned!

@@aoshikichu6985 Thank you Toshi. You're awesome, and I appreciate the kind words.
This song is directed at Scott borchetta not scooter Braun. I think this is how she trusted him and he betrayed her and now that she's cut him off and had to move on, he's drunk on the pain and tossing out blame. He realises the money 💰 isn't as good as he thought it'd be.
Ahhh, Yeah that makes sense. Great thoughts Dom!

Great reaction video! I love this whole album honestly! It was interesting to see your perspective and get another idea of what the lyrics mean to Taylor! I actually covered The 1 and Cardigan from her new album! It would be awesome if you could check that out!
