Many of us Rory fans had been awaiting a release of a live performance from the latter part of his brilliant career - and this certainly did not disappoint. Even as his health was declining, his playing and vocals were so impeccably seasoned and the quality of this recording allowed that to shine. Became aware of Rory through those rock concert TV shows in the early-mid 70s, in the US. Was lucky to have seen him live, in 1978 - Rory touched my musical soul unlike any other performer and I listen to him every day. Thanks for a lovely review of this important release and keep on...

Hello Phil. Bought Rory's debut album upon release in '71 and saw him live in my hometown Kortrijk (Belgium) exactly 50 years ago. Terrific concert in a small venue. In those days we all had to sit on chairs ! Imagine the scene !

A good review and shout out of the Rory Gallagher album Phil. The man in the checked shirt and battered 1961 Fender Stratocaster- a rock blues legend. I saw a blues rock band play some of his songs in a local pub recently, and the annual Rory Gallagher festival was held in Ireland just last month. He will always be remembered and his music lives on. I keep saying I'll go one year to the festival. Apart from his music, what I really liked about Rory was his personal and music integrity. He never sold out commercially - played no thrills rock/country blues within the blues heritage. Also one of the few high profile musicians to play both sides of the border during the Irish Troubles.

Hi Phil - saw Rory in concert a few times, late 60's, early 70's and as you say, check shirt, denim jeans and that battered Strat. We were switched on immediately to that first Taste album - and on from there. I dont have a lot of Rory's stuff - but he will always be a legend to me. Cheers Doug

Like yourself Phil I came to Rory through the Live In Europe LP , I saw Rory in concert from the age of 15 in 1974 , and followed him all his life ever since . I have every album by Rory and he will always be my favourite live performer . Every Christmas he played his shows up until New Year's Eve , and I never missed any of them. I'm delighted that his brother Donal and his sons are still bringing out more Rory magical music .

Thanks Phil. First heard the great man on one of those Sounds flexi-discs around '73. It was the Live in Europe version of Bullfrog Blues. That was it. One thing that often gets missed is just how soulful the music was. His guitar playing, the songs and the vocal had so much feel and emotion. It really came from within. When he started writing those pulp fiction characters and changed his style in the late '70s I thought he lost his way a little bit, but he found his way back again. Such a huge loss when he died so young.

I think my first encounter with Rory Gallagher was a track on a 4-track flexi-disc that was on the cover of the Sounds music paper - probably 1973. The other tracks (I think) were the Ox, some Clapton track and who knows what else, but they didn't inspire me as much as the Bullfrog Blues track. It was a time when Mud were in the charts and that weird bopping dance was in vogue. Bullfrog Blues had sweat flying off me, especially when I tried to bop double-time. (I think the track came from Live in Europe but I didn't find out until much later.) I loved it.
Oddly, I didn't pursue Rory's recordings then. It was a few later when I bought my first pre-recorded cassette and that happened to be Rory Gallagher. I was in the back of my parents' car being driven to my university, and I had an old-fashioned cassette recorder and an ear-phone. It was a Polydor recording that I believe had a combination of tracks from two earlier albums. I loved that too (it was one of the first I converted to CD to play in the car). It may have been my introduction to slide guitar, and although I had little experience on my acoustic guitar, I recall using out an Alka-Seltzer bottle, sliding it up and down the neck. Not a great sound, but it was fun.
In this way, Rory was an influence - even though I didn't buy many more of his albums. I bought Irish Tour 74 and the aforementioned Live in Europe but they didn't get much playing - by then my collection had exploded in other areas and other music dominated. Still, I recognise Rory as an important brick in the building of my music tastes. An awareness of electric blues.

It's funny you should mention about Rory's on stage activities because when I was at the High Voltage Festival in 2010 and Joe Bonamassa came on (who I'd never seen before and who turned out to be excellent), he was running about the stage a lot too and watching him took me straight back to memories of Reading Festival in 1980 when Rory headlined on the Friday night... I suspect you remember it too because I remember you saying you were there for that amazing Slade set on the Sunday night.
I have this live CD, I am saving it for the weekend when I can just sit down and enjoy it from start to finish.

Good stuff Phil. My own introduction to Rory (50 years ago) was via a live set, this being 'The Live in Europe' album. Though I like all the studio albums, I always gravitate towards the live ones, that wonderfully immersive expanded 'Irish Tour '74' being a firm favourite. I have the new set but as always there was a tiny intake of breath regarding the difference in price between the CD and the vinyl.

I love all Rory Gallagher periods, but for me the period around the late seventies, early eighties I love the most. So for me, Stagestruck is awesome. Pure energy from top to bottom. Straight forward furious hard rock. On the other hand, Live in Europe and Irish Tour '74 are the most passionate and soulful guitar playing I have ever heard. Such a genius. You can truly feel that he and his instrument are one. BTW, since your knowledge is so vast, would you happen to know if it is true that when Hendrix was asked: “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world” Hendrix replied: “I do not know, you have to ask Rory Gallagher”

    • @CookieMonsterJams
      @CookieMonsterJams 5 месяцев назад

That Hendrix quote is an urban legend that never happened. The same exact quote also goes around for other guitar players of that time like Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath. There is no record at all of Hendrix ever saying that, even Donal Gallagher confirmed this.

So sad he was ignored by many except for diehard blue's & rock guitarist / fans in the United States. He was an absolute legend no question his playing an fan interaction was unmatched as well. Sad how it all ended for him but his music lives on today and stands the test of time. Greatly missed today and ignored an nearly every top guitarist fan or media poll I am not knocking SRV, Clapton, Paige, Blackmore, Hendrix etc.. but Rory earned the right to be considered right there among them.

Hi Phil, Rory was Phenomenal, I got into him with the 'Live in Europe 72 ' Album. And it went on from there. I have every Album he made, from Taste to all of the recent releases over the years. Rory was a true musician, he wasn't interested in Stardom, he lived for his music and he loved his fans. It was such a shame that we lost him so soon. I was luck enough to see him three times, in the seventies, they some of the best live concerts i was lucky enough to go too.

Listening you feel you are right their at the concert and you come away uplifting and buzzing from the music. I liked your insightful review. 💗

Thanks for the mention Phil, I'm sure BiggieSmalls loved it too, the motto "You can never have enough" is so applicable to Rory and a handful of what I suppose are looked upon as 'Heritage' Santana, Deep Purple Led Zeppelin etc... Rory is so unique, nobody before or since has sounded like him and although he is loved by many other musicians (Joe Bonamassa springs to mind) he is extremely underrated and overlooked, these recent releases serve as great intros to his oeuvre and as you said you can go anywhere from here, he should never be forgotten as one of the all time greats for that is what he is!!🎸🔊🎶🧙‍♂️

I agree with everything you say about the incomperable Rory Gallagher's talent. However, I still think he made a mistake by hiring musicians to... 'follow him' around musically, rather than working with musicians that were going to challenge him, push him further, even out of his 'comfort zone'. I think the second Taste album, 'On the Boards' indicated where he might have gone with his music.

I do find it sad that some people even 50 year olds lol aren't adventurous enough to go back to 70s and discover or don't like, that's old man music sad.
On the other hand it's refreshing to refreshing to see 20 and 30 year olds going back to discover bands they might not know across all genres and investigate.
This is especially true in the extreme metal genre.
My experience was Opeth thought oh no that's not for me ,heard Blackwater Park wow was hooked.
And that's the beauty of music looking at rest of bands catalogue so interesting.
My only gripe is the current trend of bands trying to reinvent the 80s AOR corporate era😂.
Take care and keep up the good work.
    Cheers Jonathan
