  • Recorded next to the river in the Great Smoky Mountains National Forest, April 2nd, 2009.
This song came to me after my grandmother passed away, March 1998. I first sang it at her funeral. This song is on the drum, I ask it be used in a respectful way.

I guess you can't make everyone happy. I'm Cherokee not Lakota, if you noticed there are no links to purchase my music! I'm the lead singer for a southern singing group but I felt this song wasn't about me so on the day I filmed this I didn't want to show my face. I've been singing and dancing since the early 1970's just for the enjoyment but I have won a few contests, I've never been called a culture vulture.

Thank you for the beautifully, well done song to your grandmother! My great great grandmother, Sarah was full-blooded Cherokee. She lived to be 94 years young, I say young because she had a strong sense of vitality and a youthful spirit! She was blind in her later years but still loved having company, and could still whip you up a four course meal every time you went to visit her! She lived several hours drive away from us, but we visited her often! I can still smell her large backyard apple orchard, coming down her long driveway, lined with big beautiful oak trees.. I look back all those years ago and I smile, in my eyes, she was as strong as an oak, and beautiful inside and out, I miss her, and cant help but think of what an amazing reunion it will be when we all get to heaven singing joyfully! GOD BLESS! ❤

Very proud to say I have helped them come into this world and have had to sit and stay with them until they pass. We call our house the isle of misfit toys. I am Cherokee Nation (west) and I have never been to the Smokey mountains. But somewhere in that area there is a mountain named after my Cherokee grandfather. Your song by the river transported me there and helped me feel connected to his ancestors. Wado. My grandfather was made an honorary Lakota Chief after WWll and given an eagle feather war bonnet; so I have old photos of my Cherokee grandfather in a Lakota headdress. Some traditionalists say this is not 'correct' but for him it was, as he bridged many worlds. I believe we are all now rainbow bridges of many cultures coming together and sharing our gifts with each other. Creating a new/old way which will carry us forward. Spirit is never stagnant; always changing and reforming the cosmos of which we are part.

Thank you so much for giving me my heritage to me, for my Great Grandmother Was Full Blooded Cherokee, and she married my great grandfather and had 3 children, I am little over 1/16th with a little bit of Sioux from my fathers side. I am honored to be close to the Great Spirit, and a child of nature. The beauty in the Mother Earth is within every Native American, as is the creators wisdom. As the prints left behind were no prints, but lore, legend, and passing on through the rites of passage.

She did not take the trail of tears, but stayed in the back country of North Carolina in the 1800's. One reason for my happiness in hearing this, is because I find myself singing in a language I never learned when Im on a journey traveling. How I sing from my spirit reminds me of some of this song. Thank You

I am not sure how I came here to this page, except for the questions to the spirits I have been asking about how to trace my Indian ancestry. It is interesting how questions always find an answer. Beautiful memorial music. Thank you.

I didn't put any words in this song I desired that it be placed on the drum so it could be used without being missunderstood. This melody came to me a few days after my grandmother passed away, I sang it at her funeral, very difficult. I felt great loss and sadness when I made the song and I feel the same when I sing it now.

I mourn with this song for what it means for me as a person as well. I never knew this side of my family, it was taken from me at way too early of an age. My mother always refused to teach what she learned out of shame. I'm slowly learning things now but there is no one I can speak to.
