Was watching this game. Our whole neighbourhood came out into the street screaming after we won. Just an awesome game and awesome time of my life in Newcastle. I was talking to Robbie O Davis about this game only a couple of months ago. Ran into him one night in Newcastle. He was a bit surprised when I told him I actually met him in 1993 when he first came to Newcastle. He worked as a drink machine delivery driver on the side in his early days with club. Nice bloke
Was watching the game with the family out at Edgy, and you could hear the roar from everyone in their houses when Albert scored. Still gives me chills …. Unlike any rugby league experience I’ve ever had including being at the ground for state of origins and tests The whole suburb was audible !!
@J G That just means 240 countries like it when people hilariously fake injuries to get ahead. Such people are of no concern to anyone outside of a psychiatric facility.
Brisbane were at their peak at a time that no one else in Super league were. Of the few teams who could have potentially challenged them, Canterbury had been gutted by the move to Super league, Cronulla weren't quite up to Brisbanes par yet and Canberra were an injury laden aging team. So its not surprising there wasn't a good memorable contest for the super league cup.
@pm110978 2023 Grand final is up there, but that try in the last 30 seconds was epic, and the Knights were the underdogs. Panthers were the favourites.
WOW, remember watching this, as I lived most of my life in Newcastle. I was living in Sydney, and I never expected the Knights to beat Manly, and I literally had tears in my eyes. I said to my wife,' Do you want to go to Newcastle'', she said, '' I can't, I am working tomorrow''. I then said,'' do you mind if I go for a few days'' and I did, and there were literally people dancing in the streets from the Northern part of the Central coast, all the way to Newcastle.
Most thrilling end to any game of Rugby League ever. In my opinion, the 1997 GF stands with the 1989 GF and the 2015 GF as the three greatest Grand Finals of all time. There have been some classics (1991, 2003, 2004, 2016 and 2023 come to mind) but nothing comes close to the top 3. And the commentary of Rabs as Albert ran through.... goosebumps.
I've cried 3 times watching footy, when Royce Simmons scored off a Geyer pass in 91, when Hogkinson dummied n scored the winning try for NSW in 2014, and THAT TRY BY ALBERT!
If Thurston had converted the final try in the 2015 final, I'd have said that it was the best of those 3. The Golden Point system cheapened the finish too much. Maybe it would have been better if they'd simply gone into regular extra-time.
@@connorism69 Little did Thurston know by hitting that goal post he would forever change the life of Ben Hunt. For real though Ben Hunt was one of the best players last year, this year will be good too.
At 1:32:48 and 1:39:15 Manly's #9 player (Lyons) lets Joey Johns go right by - why didn't he tackle Johns? Was he off side? He had just tackled Darren Albert but after Albert played the ball to Johns, I thought Lyons was then on side ... ? At 1:39:15 you see him reach to grab Johns but then he backs off and lets him by (?)
Newcastle's handling was the worst I"ve ever seen by a winning grand final team. By a country mile. Gutsy win, but how many balls went to ground over the course of the game???
As a supporter of a Super League team, i have never watched this match. The ARL competition was invalid to we Super League fans. Many friendships ended during this time.
This was theft. Never seen a more blatant example of a team winning though sheer luck and getting the bounce of the ball. Manly were absolutely firing and were just progressively demoralised and deflated through nothing more than undeserved misfortune. What really made me sick about it though, is how Newcastle just took the victory and never ever once acknowledged the truth.
One of the most iconic sporting affairs in Australian Sports history.

Along with the 1989 and 2015 Grand Finals, this will go down as one of the three greatest GFs of all time.

Cheers for the footage 🤙

You're 100% right mate. Such a memorable day for a year that was split but this game needed the restore
I was at this game. It was the most exciting match I’ve ever seen. The hatred in the stadium for Manly was palpable.
This is one of the greatest grand final games that I ever watched on TV.
Nobody remembers the super league GF. But this one lives on as one of the best.
Maybe because the super league didn’t count as a real competition

💯 No body ever talks about the super league grand final of 1997…
1997 belongs to the knights and will always be remembered as our finest victory ever!
The last 10 minutes of the GF was a gem as far as I'm concerned. It was "Controlled Panic"!!!
Or was it panic with a purpose???
This, in my opinion, was the greatest grand final of all time.
You still think that after last night?
@pm110978 What do you think? What kind of question is that?

I’ve heard stories about this grand final yet I have never watched it until now… UNBELIEVABLE GAME!!! Congratulations Newcastle well deserved 🏆
1st time I've watched it since the actual day. Incredible game.

You're 100% right mate
I was there. To this day the best game I’ve ever been to.
Me too, I was just behind Darren Albert's try.
They need to put that clip of Matty John’s missing that field goal on the matty johns show 👀😂

Hurts to this day that it wasn’t North Sydney there instead of Newcastle.
yeh, but it had to be this way.
That hit from Hughes around the 77th minute was massive.
That's just enormous what you've just done, Shannon Nevin!
What a great game.Manly were the better team on the day, but it was Newcastle's destiny. That's rugby league.
