How wonderful to see this tribute to a dear friend. Corwin and I (along with a host of others) competed against each other in high school forensic (acting) tournaments. Later, I would go to which ever club he was performing drag in Montrose area. I was one of the few straight Cats with a front row seat to the creation of Amazing Grace. He was such a wonderful, giving Cat. When I saw him in LDDS, I was excited and saddened. He was always tiny... but I could see he was sick. But in true Corwin fashion (see what I did there?), he gave it all to the end...
Cheers Comedy Hype. He was a really good dude - and a real friend.

When I lived in Dallas I ran into some people who knew him..they was all in the drag world and one of them was his cousin. They said he was really nice in real life and that he could fight. They said he was NOT scared to throw down in a good ole fight. They even showed me a few pictures of him that not too many people have seen (along with his funeral program obituary); It's sad he didn't get to see himself in one of the most underrated yet iconic black movies ever made. May he continue to Soul Sail In his Heavenly Journey.. 😇
PS it was also sweet of Mr Wayans have him in this movie considering his sexuality..Mr Wayans did NOT have to do that. So kudos to you Handsome Wayans

He (as Amazing Grace) was still performing nightclubs in Dallas, right up until his final hospitalization. He was definitely the big ticket in the gay community. Standing-room only and packed to the rafters like sardines. He branched out to neighboring states for appearances when it was still very much the rare privilege of a precious few in the drag world. They’d fly him out first class to clubs in MO, OK, CO, AZ, and L.A. He was a hard worker, and his passing was such a loss to those of you that never saw him live. He had a lot of respect for his audience and gigs, and such was his regional success at that point that he became well-known for wearing expensive Chanel suits and Papagallo shoes onstage. I wish you had shown him as Amazing Grace because he looked SO real, even right up-close. And just gorgeous. When we heard he’d died we were shocked as his illness had been kept secret. But more than that, we felt sadness that we would never see him perform again. The In Living Color gay saloon sketch with Damon Wayans as a gay Old West cowboy was totally lifted off a Corwyn Hopkins bit. Especially the straw thing he did with his lips. That was signature Amazing Grace. A character he did called ‘Debrah Debrah!’
