  • Hi Friends! You can train most large shrubs into a tree form by following these simple steps:
    1. Identify your main/desired lower branches that will eventually become your tree trunk(s) Shrubs are great for creating the multi-trunk tree look!
    2. Prune all lower growth that is not your desired main branches. Be sure to also prune the lower side branches from the identified main branches-creating upright leaders without lower lateral growth. This will help your plant focus more energy into vertical growth and ensure the green leafy growth is at the top of the plant.
    3. Prune out any thin (think smaller than a pencil) branches even higher up on the main leaders. This helps strengthen and thicken up the leader branches.
    4. As always when we’re pruning-be sure to prune out any diseased, damaged, or dead branches.
    5. Throughout the growing season periodically prune out new baby growth if it appears low on the branches to continue forcing the plant into upward growth.
    6. Continue this pruning habit each year-and you will have successfully turned your large shrub into a tree form!
Let me know if you have any questions!

I have three vitex that I found on clearance at Lowe’s last year, when they were 24” tall twigs. Each have added about 3’ in height and 8-9’ in width this summer and have so many blooms. The hummingbirds love them. I like your idea of making them into more of a tree form. I’m going to try your idea.

We have a more mature vitex. Would we prune it the same way?

Yes you would do the same. The con would be that with a more mature plant you don't have as much control over the final shape of your main leaders (trunks). But if you see good bones within the plant, I'd go for it!

I have one that's still young and I was wondering how to prune it into a tree. I live in Louisiana (zone 9A) so it's probably not going to go completely dormant like yours so when would be the right time to shape it? She's a full large shrub shape right now. Just kind of growing free form at the moment.

Hi! They bloom on new wood-so if you don’t want to loose any of your blooms for the season prune right after they bloom. But otherwise you can prune any time you’d like. It won’t affect them either way! They are tough and beautiful plants!

@@GardenwithJoanna Thanks for the response. She's blooming for the second time this season so I think I will take your advice and wait until blooming is over. It's in full Louisiana sun all day and seems to love it so I can attest that they are tough. I've lost two other trees in that exact spot because it's brutal out there. The nursery recommended the vitex when I asked what is hard to kill. So far, so good.
