  • My tribute to a particular public pool in Toronto, Ontario...with gratitude for all public pools and the renewal they offer us all. (Recorded at Hugh's Room Live on June 21st, 2024, in an opening set for Tyler Ellis, as he released his terrific new album "Greater-Than.")
    Lyrics:
There are too many people in the lane.
That man is going nowhere, treading water once again.
But the water's not too warm, and not too cool
when I'm swimming in the Jimmie Simpson Pool
You'll find me here a couple times a week.
I'm not the strongest swimmer, but it's not the speed I seek.
I come here for the special kind of fuel
found only in the Jimmie Simpson Pool
Water carry me, through the changes calling me.
Water hold me up, in these stormy days
of life and loss and love.
Today I learned that Jimmie Simpson was
a mayor and a journalist, a Socialist, because
he stood for common people as a rule.
I'm sure he'd feel at home here in the pool
with all of us just trying to stay afloat
in a world on fire, where we can't see through the smoke
of the stupid and the senseless and the cruel.
Still, everything dissolves here in the pool.
Water carry me, through the changes scaring me.
Water hold me up, in these stormy days
of life and loss and love...
I really don't know if this world can change.
But when I'm in the water, staying in my lane,
swimming in the Jimmie Simpson pool,
I'm hopeful for this blessed ship of fools.
Water carry me, through the changes yet to be
Water hold me up, in these stormy days
of life and loss and love...and love...
    Water hold me up,
    water hold me up...
