The Nart people pursued the apples of a golden tree which bore a strange red and white pattern--eating from either side of it would allow the conception of a child with beautiful white hair. However, the apples kept mysteriously vanishing during the night--so two mighty brothers were set on the case of the vanishing apples.

Hi everyone. I want to talk real quick about the "Russian-ness" of this episode. A few weeks ago I posted about this in our Patreon but I think it's important so I'll mention it here too (and it'll be a lot of the Myth's Matters episode):
When I stumbled upon the Nart myths I thought they were really important to cover because they were suppressed by the Soviet government and with the on going conflicts in the Caucuses are a cultural heritage that is endangered. I asked the Patrons if they would mind if I used one of the Russian episodes that they voted on to tell these stories because with the platform we have we need to push against that sort of suppression. Unfortunately Patreon only allows us 20 categories for myths and we don't have a North Caucus one, so the way the title got pulled it was listed as "Russian". I'm sorry for that. It's a problem that we have that I have to think through with our system for most indigenous culture that were later supplanted or marginalized.
For right now I'm going to see if someone on the team can edit it, but again apologies, all I can say is that I hope it caused a few people who would otherwise never have heard these tales because of state suppression stumble on them in the meantime.

I took two classes under the man who translated the myths by John Colarusso at McMaster. The Nart's mythology is ancient and probably older than ancient greek.

Some quests get you a house. Some quests get you a magical artifact. Some quests get you a girl. It kinda sucks that people are comparably valued with buildings and cool swords, but it's a suck that transcends time and culture.
And instead of killing my family for stealing the apples he decided to save my life
she's like that: "I used to be a high-fly-bird, but one day got an arrow in my kn... butt. "
To be fair, the girls were theives and her injuries were just in defense of property and even so, he still saved her life based on a misunderstanding from both sides.
I guess it would have been better if she had died then huh. Considering he owed her nothing.
Yep its like if a cop shot a thief running away and then followed her blood trail, found her injured and instead of bringing her in took pity on her and nursed her back to health and married her afterwards.
I really loved the younger brother's "oh crap..." face.

@@cheddarcheese4159 The Golden Apple of Discord was made by Eris, Goddess of Chaos and Disorder. It wasn't from a tree; unlike the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, which are from a tree in a garden guarded by a multi-headed dragon. So while there are in fact golden apple trees in Greek myth, the Trojan War does not have anything to do with a fruit *tree* even if all these problems are apple related.

The proper term for the region where the Nart myths exist is North Caucasus, or Ciscaucasia.
Nartia isn't a place, and for that matter, the Narts aren't a people. Nart means 'giant' or 'hero' in several languages from the region, like Adyghe, Abkhaz or Ossetian, so the name basycally means 'Heroic sagas'.

Funny thing is, the myth is not russian at all. Caucasian culture is very different from the russian one and the people of Chechnya or Dagestan dont associate themselves with russians at all.

Wow not sure how I missed this episode 3 months late: Nart Sagas are as rich as any Sagas out there, it was ignored and forgotten outside of the Caucasus. I am grateful that Extra Credits made this episode!
Abkhazian,Circassians, Karachay,Balkars, Ossetians... to a lesser degree in the East the Chechens and Dagestani people also share these myths.

Russian myths? Damn there is a hell of a lot of them.
Some constructive criticism would perhaps to make the faces less - cartoony? Their expressions often fell deep into the uncanny valley for me I’m not sure why but they really unsettled me.
Also perhaps some exploration of the historical and sociological implications around the myth could be nice!

Magic tree, apples, parting of the sea it’s interesting how these elements repeat in so many cultures stories
Well if you want to showcase the badassery of your hero, them forcing a massive body of water to get the hell out of the way is a pretty effective method!

Simple: they had no Phones, so if you went of on a quest to some far away and/or unknown land, you could not just send a SMS or even a Letter to tell everyone you were still alife and well (or maby not so well).
After some time, you were just asumed to be dead or something like that.
So they basicly are saying that they expect there Familie/friends/etc. to wait for the mentiont periode of time befor they hold some kind of funeral, divide the worldly posetions or remarry (in case of a spouse)
At least to my knowlage its something like that. Also it's to help give the audiens a sense of the passing time in a Story and how far the hero is treveling
At first I was apprehensive about Extra Mythology, but now I love it. You basically inspire every D&D session I run, and really help to spread cultural myths around.
I love and appreciate all the effort from the entire team.
As far as I remember, the word "Nart" is only applied to the heroes of the Nart sagas, not the people. The Nart mythos is present among the Ossetians, Adyghes, Chechens, and a few other Russian ethnicities, but they do not really call themselves "Narts".

I would like to state that our tales do differ from one version to another depending on the dialect and region of the speaker. I personally know two versions of this tale, Besleney (Eastern) and Shapsigh (Western), and your interpretation struck me as a medley of both - perhaps leaning towards the Shapsigh version slightly more.
The eastern version is a little more morbid and interesting in my opinion as the two brothers were identical twins.

The older twin saw his brother and his bride emerging from the sea. Delighted, he went to hunt for a feast.
The younger brother followed his brother into the forrest just as the older twin reappeared.
The two were so similar in appearance that the bride thought the older twin was her husband. She addressed him, but he did not reply to her.
She was so deeply hurt and offended that when her actual husband returned and addressed her, she refused to acknowledge him.
"It's my fault they lost each other," said the older twin and shot an arrow over his head.
"It's my fault he killed himself!" exclaimed the bride, "I confused you two."
Betrayed, her husband plunged his sword into his chest and followed his brother.
...
The bride later on gave birth to two twin boys, left them in the care of the Narts, and returned to her mother in the underwater realm.
The EC crew is doing a great job in bringing mythology from all over the globe
The ripped shark playing a guitar was the highlight of the whole story. I had to watch that bit again and again. Super hilarious.

when people say "Russian", they usually mean "slavic". And slavic and caucasian cultures are quite different. BTW, Russian native far east culture is different from these too.

I gotta say, I am only *slightly* miffed that you used rather anachronistic clothing for the Narts... but ok.
What would have been the correct clothes? This -never happened- is a legend.

It`s like telling some folk tales from the US in late 18th century and just decking them all in hoodies because you couldn`t find proper clothing references. It just seems wrong.
Idk what would be the more appropriate clothings, since the clothings in the animation seems to be historically accurate, and I think they have researched quite enough for the story, the clothings, etc (props to them for that), But I believe that all (if not most) of the Narts would wear armours instead of normal clothings. Other than that, I think it's alread good enough, keeping in mind that not many of us had ever heard of North Caucasian mythology before compared to Greek mythology or Norse mythology.
MAN I hope You'll continue to cover the Nart Myths! They are absolutely awesome and cover the whole milieu of the indoeuropea myths (the trip to the underworld, the Giants etc) while being prime RPG material.
It's like they were written with RPGs in mind.

Neither Giants nor underworld are unique and specific to Indo-European mythologies.

This narts story is the oldest there is chronilogically the son of the youngers brother is called wazermaazj he is considerd to be the fater of the next (new) generation of narts about whom the most of the stories speak.

I know other people have said this, but the peoples of the Caucuses are quite distinct from Slavic Russia, I know a lot of these lands are part of Russia now but I still think calling them Russian is a bit inaccurate.

The artists researched well. Their manner of dress and weaponry is spot on.
"Nart Sagas" means "Heroic Sagas" so the term Nart people is misguided.
On top of that I am pretty sure the Nart people don't like to be called Russians.

The Golden Tree of the Nart: how do you like *them* apples?
One of the most fascinating things about mythology is the remarkable number of parallels (even if they're not always obvious) that one can find across space and time. The more I've studied mythology, the more clear the ancient archetypes become.
I've often wondered, "What did our ancestors know that we didn't?"
For all the pride we take in our technology, I often feel we've lost an awful lot of knowledge that's probably much more valuable than we know.
I guess we'll just wait and see.

I'm... a bit confused. I thought the whole point was to get them to stop stealing the apples? He wasn't chasing a bride.
Maybe she was just really impressed that he actually managed to hit her with the arrow?
I guess she just don't know, and be thankfull of his aid.
But well, for current standard that used to knowing reality which romance need consent and relationship building, typical "damsel and her savior sir hero" story feels a bit iffy and really outdated.
