    Picked up my first pair (mens) in the Spring. Maybe a couple of hundred miles on them. Didn't want to touch the shoes because of that lacing system. What I've been surprised with is the durability. When something is so light you can usually expect it to break down pretty quickly but that just hasn't happened. We'll see. But I'll disagree with the ankle cuff. It doesn't offer support. There's space around the whole thing. At least for me. One more eyelet and a gusseted tongue would have taken care of that. This is trail runner weight and they had to make some decisions but this picks up pebbles pretty easily. Also took me a little time to get the lacing correct. Might be ok out of the box for some but that wasn't my experience. SO light though. And super sticky which was also surprising because Contragrip hasn't delivered the for me in the past. If you're on a lot of rocky trails, off trail or looking for something to edge I think there's better options. I wear something else for those conditions. But groomed stuff...awesome.

    I own Salamon x ultra gtx mid since 2014 and it holds so well for me. I usually do care of shoes ( dont walk in city on asphalt or concrete, clean them occasionally after muddy, sandy or salty environment) . I found they are best for day hikes on different terrains, like dog walk or hiking in mountains with light backpack. They are flexible, have great grip, very very comfortable and durable - no repairs needed in for a past 10 years !!!
    But since last 2 years i begin to go on more rugged Scandinavian terrains with multi day tracking through wet and moist areas with 22kg backpack i upgraded into Quest 3 4d GTX since i needed more support for ankles, more durability and better weather sealing. ( With my last trip i took X Ultra Gtx Mid shoes to Sweden and it begin to fail me, since i was pushing it to the limits. I got few holes on bending areas and Water proofing wasn't that good, always stayed wet cousing me discomfort with appearing blisters). So i most time use X ultra GTX mid on weekend hikes for less challenging terrains and light hikes, but for expedition type multi-day hikes in mountains i take my Quest 3 4d GTX boots.

      Sounds like you've got yourself a pretty good setup there when it comes to your footwear. If you've managed to keep hold of the same pair for 10 years you've done really well with them and clearly take care of your shoes!

  • @jdahik97

    Little tip here. You don’t have to pull the laces super tight. The chassis does a good job of locking in almost immediately. Otherwise, the chassis can dig into the side of your foot. I’ve had that happen to me. And I switched the insoles for better support

    I am considering getting the ultra 4, but I have seen the recommendation to replace the insoles with much comfier insoles to get a comfort level similar to that of the Ultra 3's. This also helps alleviate a lot of the feeling of rocks and what not. Would you recommend this? Also, having wide feet, would the ultra 4's fit or should I get the wide version? Is it true to size or should I get a size up? Thank you for your video

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  2 года назад

      It's true that you can feel a lot underfoot. It's largely personal preference as to whether you like that sensation or not. I'd recommend trying them as they are, and if you'd prefer a bit more support, look into a set of Superfeet insoles; I use the TrailBlazer Comfort and they're brilliant (link below). In regards to wide fitting, it's hard to tell without seeing your feet. You could always try both around the house and send back the pair that doesn't fit! Both are pretty true to size length wise but this does depend on which brand(s) you're comparing to. I opted for my usual size when I had a pair of X Ultra Trek Mids. Harry

    Why has Salomon removed quicklace from all its MID models? It is at MID that quicklace is needed the most. I have a pair of low model X Ultra 4 gtx that are equipped with quicklace and I hardly ever use it. I just "jump into the shoes" without tying the knot. But if I'm going to have a MID model then I want to tie and then it's quicklace that applies. I have a pair of old Salomon gtx MID with quicklace, worked perfectly all these years and now want to buy new worthy replacements! Why has Salomon removed quicklace from all its MID models? Anyone who knows???

    • @trekitt

      @trekitt  Год назад

      Depends on your personal preference and where you plan on using them most. Salomon make mids and shoes across a lot of their range and it can be tricky to pick between them sometimes. Easiest one is your desired level of support, if you want a little more support then the mid may be the way to go.

  • @vanessabarbosa3681

    there is a big flaw in the waterproof of these boots (at least in the ebony women's version). Sole and areas with gore tex are in fact waterproof, however there are two areas where it is not. if the tongue of the boot or the collar of the boot (the ebony parts) gets wet from rain or mud, the water will get in through there. I don't know if the man's versions have these problem! I was really surprised.. i use salomon ultra 3 for years and never had these problem! these however are more comfortable. In the previous ones i use a 38 but in these new version a 37 is enought because they are wider. It's a shame but i am thinking that i should returned them. For the ones in doubt... The Ebony boots are blue, grey, ebony with black sole and strings

    • @trekitt
      @trekitt  2 года назад

      That's strange, the membrane should go almost all the way to the top of the collar and shouldn't come through the tongue. Perhaps the lacing needs to be adjusted if there's a gap?

    • @vanessabarbosa3681
      @vanessabarbosa3681 2 года назад +1

      @@trekitt nop. Not really. The water came in from behind in the case I didn't get the tongue of the boot wet. Later i did a test, i put a few drops of water in the center of the tongue and the water spreed from the top to the the inside. I never add these problem with the x ultra 3!
