Thank you, Jay. If it wasn't for you, the general public would never have the amazing privilege to see great automobiles like this. You are a good man.
Jay, you are truly a good guy. The gracious manner you have with your guests (especially the older ones) is truly heartwarming. No hyperbolae, I really mean it.
Thanks for the best show on RUclips
Almost at the top of the comments lol.... Hey Jay i know you prolly will not read this but as a veteran running my own detailing company ... I wanted to thank you for your continued support for both active duty and veterans.... It's partly thanks to your inspiration im opening several shops just to give wounded vets the chance to work again..... So thank you i can only hope you read this.... And one Day I truly hope to spend some time with you at your shop
God bless you sir
TheBloker9 thank you thats very nice of you to say
chris houston There needs to be more people in the world like you!
chris houston Good job sir
Alex Harrington thank you so much
One day we will all get old and look back in our days past. Letting a man tell his stories and reflect and be able to feel validated by the respect shown my ppls interest in the subject matter.
Mr.Leno does it like nobody can.
One of the best interviews I've seen on here. A lot of other interviews have that sales pitch tone to them. I love the way he answered the questions short and to the point. A man that doesn't have time to mess around.
I was just thinking I was in the mood to watch an episode of Jay Leno's garage. This is perfect timing.
EnlightenedAce Always Sunday night, every week.
mcgaugh57 Always Monday morning in the UK.
I had to wait 4 years!!!
That is one fabulously beautiful car. My hat is off to you Bob.
Reminds me of a concept car from years ago called the 'Mako Shark".
A personal statement to Jay and his crew. This is a passion for the Automobile that you guys present for us and what moves me the most is that you guys do this without a partnership with RUclips. No money is being earned through ads. You do these videos for the love of showing us unusual and wonderful automobiles. Kudos to you Jay, and to your film crew for all you do to present us with these fantastic videos. Cheers!! Zip~
That is one cool Old Timer, big thumbs up for Bob Shaw!
Pretty awesome car...looks like a cross between a GT40 and a Stingray. It's like something straight out of Speed Racer. An impressive machine for sure.
You hit the nail on the head.
Especially the original one he drew.
Bob Shaws the man! Legend.
Wow... Stevens designed that car in 1959? That's quite exquisite. Looks like something that would pass as a modern car today.
It's great to live in the city where it all started, but it's a shame the company no longer exists
The car in this video was made in 2006, If you looked at the sketches you could see it was no modern day look, Looked like something from Speed Racer.
In the description, it says it was designed in 1959.
Taseen Khan Yeah, but it wasn't build with the tail fins and front end it was designed with.
dlwatib So
I absolutely love Jay Leno's garage. My dad was a mechanic and if he were still alive he would appreciate it also. To see how you bring all those cars from our era back to life is wonderful. I know I'll never have the chance to afford a muscle car from my youth, as you and I Jay are around the same age, it's nice to see that someone like you can share the joy of the ride with us through your website. Thanks Jay Leno! !😃
Quick change rear ratio? So cool. Didn't know about that, but makes so much sense.
Wow nice car ,great guest ,Jay is such a nice host, kind and respectful and humble,
Jay if you ever see this.. you need to do more sit down interviews with car legends like Bob Shaw. I really enjoyed the talking part. it was very intriguing to learn about what influenced Brook in terms of design, and what influenced Bob in terms of materials among other things. Great interview, and video as always!
Bob shaws my uncle
I love when Jay brings in guys like this. I imagine this guy can go on and on with stories about cars hes owned, built, driven, and the interesting people hes met around the industry.
YES! Would love to sit around and have drinks with this dude and just listen to the history
Bob shaws my uncle
Jay, you are such a good spirit. Thank you so much for allowing this great gentlemen on your show. He truly one of the greats!!
I love how just when Jay Leno says it's like a production car it's so amazing they show The rear of the car and you can see the trunk hopping up-and-down
Hi Jay! Great show. I have just recently started following through the internet. Just wanted to thank you for being so patient and respectfull to Bob. He has sufferd alot over the years; and can be difficult to deal with. I like how you respect all your guests on your shows; your a class act..............................
Jay, you are truly a good guy. The gracious manner with which you treat people (especially the older ones) is truly heartwarming. Thanks for the best car show ever. Oh how I would love to visit your garage. Someday !
good for Bob for getting out and showing off his car !
My favorite thing about Jay's attitude towards cars. He keeps it simple, you know? He lets a car (even a super rare one) be a car. I love that.
Great interview Jay.
We need more sit downs with these legends before they fade away with their history and incredible knowledge. Also surprised to see this great Brooks Stevens design come to life. What a beautiful car.
I was fortunate to have a Stevens family Pantera and classic Excaliber in my driveway back in the late 80's thanks to a mutual family friend, when I grew up in Milwaukee.
Hands down one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen. The lines are right. The colors are right. What a great piece of functional art. Then there's that beast-from-hell exhaust note...
You've gotta treasure these old guys... We treasure you Jay -
Thanks for staying down to earth for us guys who like cars as much as you do...
Robert Shaw is an original. Great car and a great inspiration to us in the over 65 club :-).
Wow. This car design is amazing. It is near timeless with the body lines. Fantastic. Sounds great too. Nice...very nice
My grandfather David worked for Brooks Stevens back in the day. You're missed, this is so cool to see! What a tribute
Thanks for showing this awesome vehicle and it's great designer-builder ! I hope that this car is around for a long time to honor him.
I was waiting for that guy to say, "Great Scott!"
What an amazing individual; what an amazing piece of art. The colour scheme, swooping lines, the craftsmanship & finish; perfection in its purest form.
Fantastic video of a fantastic car. Its the definition of custom and a real tribute to veterans like Bob and Brooks.
It isn't to often we see Jay Leno turn back in to an interested 12 year old boy asking questions and being awe struck by who he is talking to and what he sees in front of him. This is one of those great few videos where Jay is able to show what really gets him going and what he enjoys while he is able to show his enthusiasm.
Usually homebuilt/one off cars don't do it for me, but this car is gorgeous. The right color combo and those wire wheels just make it pop.
It's not hard to make a roadster look good but this goes so far beyond that. It is one of the best looking cars I have ever seen.
This is a very special car. One thing it has roots to the Excalibur that was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My home. Quality built by a old timer but still has a grip on the new. Love it. Thanks Jay.
Great story about a great car. The owner telling the story added a lot. Thanks Jay I really appreciate your efforts.
I could listen to old men like bob for days straight. Once all these old people are gone I’m going to be very upset.
Wow, this is very, very impressive and unique, too. Thank you such much for this episode! I`m in awe, this is so beautiful.
Beautiful looking and sounding car! Thank you Mr. Shaw for sharing. And thank you Jay for your love of cars.
I've dreamed of building my own car for 20 years. Seeing cars like this are a real inspiration. I've got to figure out a way to build something before it's too late
Having pulled Excalibur RS from the stone that is our world. You should honor us all and Mass Produce it as Excalibur LM. (Leno Motors) Maybe even a steam version.
Thanks for making sure we get to know the legends and statesmen of the automotive world, Jay! Taking 10 years to build anything these days is such a rarity. Great stuff!
LOL @ 10:09. Bob was trying to show the cameraman where to punch in the zoom with his cane and the camera guy was not having it.
He hit that tire 100 times! Lol
I thought I was the only one who noticed
LOL!! I so didnt catch that..awesome. and then soon followed by Leno thinking he meant drinking age legal while he meant street legal with 'we're legal'
THE CAMERA WORK IS A MESS, THE INITIAL WALK AROUND HE KEPT JAY IN FRAME WHEN WE WANTED TO SEE THE CAR.
I wanted to see up in that area too.A glance shot sucked. There was allot of detail just on the exhaust tips.
this is such a nice car . looks simply beautiful . the only draw back would be it has a common engine . but even that it not that bad , it is a good reliable power plant . the rear tires and wheels are simply beautiful . the guy who designed this was a artist genius . he in effect designed the 63 corvette . Bob Shaw added to it details worthy of any design house . Thanks Jay for showing us one off cars like this . There is no way we all could see these in action
Love the one off car !, Love the work and effort that went in to build it ! Love Jays interest and understanding of what it takes to build something like this Roadster ! Great story Jay !
This is such an inspiration for car design students like me. Beautiful!
I am always surprised at the videos Mr Leno comes up with..... that enlighten us ALL.......boy this is giving us some history......... and insight.
That aluminum body is incredible work. Jay Leno....MAN FOR THE COMMON MAN CAR NUT!
Nice car. Great panel work. The final design sure looks better than the original.
14:40 I love how Jay says, "It feels like a production automobile, It's amazing!" and the next shot shows the rear trunk lid flying up and down lol!
Love the sound of that motor.
When I was young I used to view old people as useless, decrepit and pitiful. As if I would be young forever. Now at 62 years old I have a different view. Never thought I would live this long. Older people have wisdom and experience that transcends time. And when they pass away we lose a valuable resource. I was mistaken when younger. Very nice car. Thanks Jay.
Hoodoo Man you were right when you were young. No use for seniors
@@NoPrivateProperty Uh huh, you'll see !
jen zydyk right.. because your limited amount of knowledge is bigger than the accumulated knowledge of life. Even me, now, 37, finally know better. Lol.
True
Kind of neat to see how the car would have originally looked as they were designing it back in the day. The end result turned out pretty cool. A shame Stevens didn't get a chance to see the finished car though. Just me, maybe could have gone with SS, for Shaw and Stevens. Kudos for showcasing the car!
When i see this i wonder why there is so much bs on the internet between europeans and americans about who makes the most beautiful/best cars... As a european i can only say that i love this car and so many of the cars produced in America, both old and new. We have some stunning cars over here but tbh when it comes to these special cars, America is ahead of us by some distance! This is a masterpiece imo ;-). My deepest respects to Bob Shaw and Brooks Stevens for creating this automotive jewel.
Bart Vandenhaute A true car enthusiast admires cars from all over. The British have had some fantastic cars, the early XKE being among my favorites.
For me the AC Cobra, Ferrari 250GTO, Lambo Miura, Corvette stingray and Ford GT40 are the pinacle of automotive industry from the past, ofc amongst dozens of other epic cars, new or old (F40, 288GTO, McLaren F1, Pagani Zonda, Viper, Corvette, etc..). But you are right, thanks for the comment ;-).
Maindrian Pace the e
Xke convertible is beautiful the coupe is hideous.
Krevin Grard i think the coupe e types are beautiful 56-57s one of my favorites
Chris Devine i just can't stand the back of the coupe. Just my opinion. The convertable is beautiful tho.
Cool car, I know it must feel gratifying to build such a work of art and finally reveal it to the world.
Yes, Jay, indeed, as you say, right at the end of this episode, we do: "have to treasure these old guys" In his youth he must have cut a dashing figure. Clearly his racing contacts, depth of knowledge and experience have all combined to create this masterpiece. Perhaps your subscribers may be keen to see some shows on these people... before they leave us - I know I'd be very interested. Be great to get their back-stories.
Regarding the evolution of the Veyron-like exhaust, when he said: "... but that's another story" I thought - and I'm sure you've got a lot of those, and they'd be so interesting to listen to. Just a thought...
Beautiful sensual car!
.. But what's more fascinating is that the designer who is obviously in pain & suffering medically, overcomes his anguish & continues to produce wonderful creations!
That's the lesson of this video
Ty
Fantastic Interview, beautiful car.....thanks again Jay and staff!
jay is one humble guy . thanks jay i love every episode
Very cool. Very well done and nicely built. Looks and sounds great too! What a great legacy to leave behind. It's fantastic he got a boost in public awareness of these cars thanks to Jay. More people definitely needed to know about this and his other cars.
Best of health to Mr. Shaw, so that he may be a part of the automotive world just that much longer.
leno is a classy guy love the respect he shows to the every day guy and the old craftsmen of years past !
Just Awesome, that you was able to interview this Great Man Bob Shaw and put his car into one of your Video's. Nice Job, Jay. One thing I noticed is the rear deck lid is bouncing as you was driving the car.
Very pretty car. I am not sold on the electric doors and hood, but I admire the purity of the lines and it's certainly something distinctive. That rear decklid needs to be secured better . . .
I love what you do for us Jay; you are a great man and my hero!
I would love to just sit down and talk to this man while going through some photo albums. Amazing work.
Jay, you have to add this one to the collection....and with such a rare and beautiful car, give Mr. Shaw a signed blank check because if you got to ask the price you can’t afford it! (And you can!). What a beautiful sports car! Talk about a smart investment, what’s that car going to be worth in 10 years?, 2x or 3x what you pay now? BUY IT!!!
That car is a conglomeration of the best looking American cars ever built. But its so beautiful you'd never know it was built today but designed 50 years ago. Amazing car
I love cars like this that exemplify the craftimanship and love some people have for machines and cars in particular, well done
Really appreciate this episode. Excellent.
this car is sweet. the side coloring reminds me of a c1 and the flares over the front wheels remind me of a c2
Apart from the outstanding details and craftmanship I really like that it is not a roaring beast. Nice and subtle sound that becomes distinct when you open the throttle
I'm not totally sold on the design but the workmanship in this car is amazing and the interior is one of the best I've seen in a car like it.
Jay, you make my day with these....I will continue to thank you every time you post this..
Thanks again from Texas :)
Very awesome, dear Santa...
That's an amazing looking car and it was really interesting to hear about its back story. It's a real piece of history.
Friggin Awesome. The build quality is fantastic. Beautiful.
Absolute automotive Gorgeousness....
I was watching this video as they drove past a gas station and I saw the gas was $4.47 a gallon. I will not complain about gas prices in south Florida again. I filled up for $2.57 yesterday.
Beautiful car Bob!
Awesome !! So good to hear the story ,of the designer who never get enough credit.. great video
That's a cool car and a real car guy for certain!
Jay - "What was the first car you built yourself?"
Bob - "It was a old Bugatti Type 38, i sawed the body in half & shortened it"
Jay - "oh really, the Bugatti club will come looking for you"
Every little thing is Jay's garage is worth a treasure hunt
"You've gotta treasure these old guys." (pats old guy) Great stuff.
Wonderful creation! I wish I had an imagination and resources to build something like that. So simple in a lot of ways and yet very sophisticated!
i watched about 2 seconds and immediately upvoted
phenomenal design. Fierce like a GT40, with a similar beauty of an Alfa Disco Volante Spider! (even though the trunk is loose LOL)
Beautiful car and one cool old dude
Really really nice, but it needs different wheels & an LS engine...solid build & the interior is nice, great color scheme/ combination..
Finishing line is awesome...
Treasure indeed
That is one of the most beautiful cars I've ever seen.
Excalibur... As an 80s child, that brings back memories of US replicas of 1930's Mercedes SSK's and SS Tourers and Roadsters. Giant sculptures of cars for Hollywood parties and the like, with the running boards and the six giant chrome pipes coming out of the coffin bonnet. Is that the same Excalibur? Is that this old man?
That car is simply stunning!
Not my style, but I can really appreciate the craftsmanship. It's too bad the originally designed nose/fascia wasn't used due to cooling issues. Although like Jay says, the aluminum work is fantastic. Well done.
Also it's insane that the car was designed in the 50's. Very ahead of its time.
Loved the big ole’ smile when J asked him if the “electric door motors were done, just to be cool?”
Honoring a great builder. Classy.
We do treasure...great individual and great inspiration!
Loved that smile/smirk @12:20
Very nice looking car!
Steven Shaffer The guys that came after the WWI and WWII era's were so great I wonder if we'll ever see another era in the U.S. where such greatness will come!?!
Yes I think it would be absolutely outstanding if Jay would get a team together and build his own 1-off car. He could do a fantastic video series taking us through the entire process from idea to finish, even designing his own engine. Not many people have the ways and means to take on such a project, it would be his perfect car.
Wow! What a beautiful Car ..... the builders can be rightly proud of their work. It sure does sit low though.......When I was a kid I sat about that high in my "Big Wheel".
Wow, I thought it was a new car that just came out. What a timeless design!!!
