As a soldier just getting to Germany in '91, I used to scream down the autobahn listening to this entire album, running about 140 mph in my Mercedes. Guess what, children? I'm still here! lol Auf wiedersehen.....
No lie, I was doing the same exact thing! 10th Engineer Batallion, 3rd Infantry Division. I got to Germany Jan 1989 and was jammin "Eye of The Beholder" in my Toyotta Corolla down the autobahn. Grüß Gott!
R.I.P. Chick Corea This was on a PBS broadcast I saw when I was 15, my gateway into the genius of Chick. I'm 44 now, and I'm not sure I would have become a musician without seeing this and the Bela Fleck and The Flecktones performance from the same show. We lost a musical genius..... hurts my heart.... 😢
We’re the same age. I was also introduced to this on PBS at 15. It’s the only channel my family watched. I taped this and watched over and over. Along with Bela Fleck from the same venue. Great memories.
I was playing this video, thinking about my Father who constantly played Chick Corea on his grand at home as we grew up. Went outside to feed the Bluejays and was greeted by a very wide and pronounced rainbow.
I love the way they groove together. The original version is great, but they were all feeling this song while they were playing it. The ones that dislike this, I can tell they aren't musicians
HARD CORE!!!! BALLS TO THE WALL!!!! The Genius and "RAW POWER" put together by Chick Corea and company, combines Sophistication● Elegance●Control● and Freedom of expression!!! ...beyond the boxed in appeal of the Cookie cutter, Clone city mentality presented by the majority of our musical population.. Don't be afraid to flex....😎
Found part of this on an old VHS tape from the early 90's. Happily found the full clip here. Great to see the last comment was left a week ago ... people still listening ...
Chick and the Elektric Band are phenominal. This piece is perhaps, arguably, my favorite, not only because- as a guitarist myself- I enjoy this showcase of Frank Gambale's amazing chops, but the entire band says quite a lot in a short space of time. I also recommend the 2004 Montreux performance of "Got A Match?" to see the band in an epic extended performance.
@@Wizardofgosz In this great wide world of ours, Gambale is not that well known. Even in jazz circles, there'd arguably be several guitarists 'tripping off the tongue' before Frank Gambale would be mentioned. In the context of my original comment, I do think he is undervalued, not talked about enuff, 'a guitar players, guitar player.' That was particularly true at the time of his involvenent with Chick Corea Elektric Band. By comparison, IMHO, I think Clapton, who everyone does know - is over rated.
I went to one of his concerts quite a few years ago when he had the base player John Patitucci and I was just blown away! I really enjoyed it tremendously!
An exceptional song. A cascade of music that hits like an impetuous wind and transports you far away, making you fly towards infinity. This is a feeling that only Great Music can generate. A mix of musicians who blend in this piece the wisdom of their interpretations and their individual performances, one at the complete service of the other, thus giving life to a sound show suitable for everyone. Thanks to Chick Corea for composing it and to the whole acoustic band for performing it masterfully.
I'm really moved, to see so much talent together ... it's tremendous .. I appreciate the quality of these musicians who still leave a mark .. for those who come back ... thanks for sharing ...
I missed this show but my old man, a classically trained pianist saw the Beneath The Mask tour at the Commodore ballroom in Vancouver and stated with great respect that he "had his ass handed to him" by the sheer virtuosity of all 5 of these grand masters on stage. Sure wish I could have been there as well.
Long time ago I was introduced to Frank Gambale via Troy Stetina's book (I got translated one to my local Thai language) he mentioned Frank Gambale in sweep picking section there was no internet for me in that era I try so hard to find Frank Gambale's cassette tape but no one sell or know anything about it one day I found one cassette in second-hand shop super happy about it ... really enjoy his work years later I have a chance to listen to Chick Corea without know anything and feel I want to know who playing guitar ? his sound like Gambale .... found out it is really him, I feel happy It so nice to see live stuffs which I feel like absolute no chance for me to see this outside from internet thanks for upload.
@grantfloering I did grow up during the 80s and I went to all these Elektric Band tours. They were totally awesome (and I don't use that word lightly). I've never seen anything quite like this before or since - although Return To Forever last year came very close. Totally awesome!
I was crazy about all of their albums, except for Light Years. Something about the production on that one. I'd have to say my favorite CCEB album was Eye Of The Beholder. And yeah, we can make fun of the way they looked, but it was 1991-92 people. Grow up. If you were, say, 17 or older in those years you were probably wearing something similar, especially if you were in a band like this. Ya buncha dorks. Let the music speak for itself and get a life.
@proghome Dude! Thanks so much for breaking it down!! Maybe I'm a sucker for suspensions ;) Yeah, I see what you mean about it really starting at 1:30. When they hit it at 1:40 with all that authority, it's just sounds so thick. I guess Patituci's tone is part of the thickening agent :D Top-Shelf.
This aired on pbs in 90s - there is a performance from Diane schur doing an amazing version what deed I do with her doing all parts (it’s a duet on lp) anybody know where to find that? Oh and thanx for this !!!
FRANK GAMBALE IS ON FIRE!!
The tightness of this band cannot be expressed with words.
yes...and look how relaxed they are playing ridiculously hard stuff live...

💥 unfortinately, there will never be groups like this again, neither the taste of the public for such music...
This is real Fusion !!! What an album indeed !
Probably my favorite CCEB album... Beneath The Mask.
RIP CHICK! A pure legend!!!!
Excellent performance. This song was brought to my attention. May Chick Corea's Spirit Carry On!
Oh my God!!!...Patitucci at 4:25...excelent!!!!
The comment I was looking for.
Ditto!
i died
Gosh I wish I grew up during this period of time. This is so good!
frank gambale on guitar, amazing...... just amazing
Dr. SuperFunk agreed
His solo albums are fantastic... but when he's together with RTF / CCEB it's superb.

Why nobody talks about that spectacular lick by Patitucci at 04:25? That's insane.
It is! 😀
Because it's easy to play
I actually talk about it at length here: ruclips.net/video/kjiP6cvfjMM/видео.html
These guys are awesome!!!!!!! I listened to them all the time in the 90's
Frank killed it. One of my favorites from Chick Corea's Beneath the Mask.

When I first got to Germany,I used to listen to this album riding down the autobahn doing 130 in a 730i BMW. Fun times!
In my opinion, the best track from 'beneath the mask', thanks to the drums of Dave Weckl and the soaring guitar of the underrated Frank Gambale.
"underrated "
...fuck off man!!!
In what world is Gambale underrated? Everyone in the world knows he's a monster.

The Chick Corea Elektric Band at their most electric (no pun intended)
Rip CHICK 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Rip chick corea ! My dad had both of his albums, the chick corea the electric band and eye of the beholder.
Bill Conners was honored in this one. Vibrato, tone, ...the works. Frank did him honors.
Goddamn it!! What true musicianship is all about!!
Frank Gambale rules. RIP chick
Amazing performance!
Yes, it is "dated" 1990 fusion jazz, but it is AS GOOD AS IT GETS!!! What a great song.
Still good in 2021
Majical performance! I watched it many times and I will keep coming back to hear it again
Gob smackingly brilliant as always.

WHAAAAT!?!!!?!?!?

Amazing band
Interesting to note that Frank Gambale's tone was WAY better with the Ibanez than it was with that weird-looking Yamaha he used later.
this is the best, all hail the king Chick !
patitucci, siempre tocando como la gran madre
That look of Chick to Gambale at 2:13 saying "I want to take your ass right now dude"
Frank is looking a little gothic. Amazing guitar as always.
