Starting your retirement planning on fundamental rules of thumb is an okay start for back of the napkin math; however, relying SOLELY on a rule of thumb for your entire early retirement strategy is not ideal and may result in working longer and saving MORE than you need.

I am floored that you are the first person I have witnessed (outside of myself and my parents) give this kind of optimistic and reasonable retirement advice. Three years ago at 47, I "worked backwards" when I realized how my work-focus lifestyle was hurting me. I analyzed my life, spending habits, investments, future income sources. I downsized everything I possibly could, and I was already quite frugal. Eventually at 49, I moved to Greece to maintain the budget I created as well as to sustain the happy future I wanted. Thank you for your simple, yet powerful advice. These 4, let alone 8% rules are scare tactics I have never paid attention to. I am glad I followed my own reasonable thinking rather than continuing to be scared into working myself to death. Best to you and your firm.

I made a big spreadsheet that takes into account that I will start receiving a pension from the government when I reach my retirement age. I only plan for a vacation every third year and very little for fun, like going to the theater and such. The idea is that if I make some extra money or if my investments go up more than expected one year, then I can indulge myself a bit more than was in the budget.
I see you only have about 700 subscribers, so I'll increase that number by one.
