Lily and Madeleine Jurkewicz were still in high school when they headed down from Indianapolis to Mellencamp's southern Indiana studio. Their dad drove them after school. Absolutely love that "World Famous" pump organ sound as a base for their pristine voices.
This is a great song. Extraordinary. John Mellancamp paired with these young ladies works a special magic. I wish the song went on for another five minutes -- melody, performance, the contrast between Mellancamp's now deeply matured voice and the sweet voices of those young ladies...I had to stand from my seat while writing this because it got me to move. This gets added to my fifty songs that have gotten to me. The man is up there with Dylan, Springsteen, Van Morrison, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. He's that good, always has been, but songs like this simply prove it. I will play this one for a long time.
The man just doesn't get the respect he deserves and I don't quite know why. Perhaps because he was a little clumsy early on in his career. But his catalog contains some underappreciated gems.
I have many albums by John and have loved his music for many years. This is a fine song and what I'd expect from such an accomplished artist. Let our search always be for the truth no matter how painful it might be.
If he hasn't done it already -- John Mellencamp should include this track on any "best of..." album he releases. This is easy to miss since it's not on any of his regular albums (as far as I know).

We're in my favorite, pretty key....D major. I can almost get the organ sound on my Juno Di, the percussive organ sound created by Juno, sound no. 10 in the organ/keyboard section. So gorgeous to hear.
