  • It's been more than three months since I began using the maffetone method for all my running. Coming back from a broken ankle it seemed the logical way to ease back into running while preparing for the 50km event at the Tarawera Ultramarathon. There had been three consecutive improvements in pace for the monthly MAF test, and after some doubt I launched into MAF test #4 just four days out from the 50km trail event.
Would the rate of improvement continue, or was I about to hit a plateau?
And just to mix it up a bit more, I ran the MAF test early in the morning, unlike the three previous tests which were run in the afternoon.
What transpired came as a surprise ......

Awesome results through the 4 tests. The beauty of lower heartrate training means a full filling of the left Atrium in the heart for a stronger contraction with the Left Ventricle. Cheers

I'm with you brother. MAF has been tremendous for my aerobic base building and have been having PR's like crazy across 5ks to Half Marathons. On my way to a sub 3 hour marathon!

That’s fantastic Nigel. I had doubts about MAF when I first started using it, but the results have been impressive. Not sure if MAF will take me back to a sub-3 marathon, but it’s an absolute winner for anything longer, like ultras. Hope it continues to go well for you. happy running. 😃🏃‍♂️

I'm really enjoying your channel, thanks! I've been running 2-3 times per week for 20 years and thought it was time for a change,so I decided to try the MAF method. I just started this week and my MAF is 131 bpm, wow I have to run about 1:30/km slower. I'm going to stick with it for a few months and see how it goes. One question about your camera. What are you using to keep the image so stable? Thanks.

Hi Shaun B, firstly camera is a GoPro 8. Great little camera. With the MAF, stick with it and you will get quicker. It can be frustrating at first when you have to run much slower than you are used to. The key is consistency
If you can run regularly then the improvement will be quick. Thanks for the feedback and happy running.

Hi Big Flat, hard to say how much you should be doing not knowing your background. If you're new to running, then take it slowly and don't increase mileage too quickly. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching the channel.
