    Hi Emmy, Im glad that I found your video since I'm practicing the exact thing you showed. My question is, what is the gauge of the backplate you were using? Thanks

      Hi there! I'm sorry I'm so late getting back to you, it's been a busy time of year... it was between 20 and 22 gauge.

    This is so helpful! Especially the pickle part :P I didn’t know about the tongs and I was going to make my own pickle ‘juice’. I think I’ll get the one you use instead. Haha

    • @EmmyBeanJewelry
      @EmmyBeanJewelry  5 лет назад +1

      To make your own pickle, I used to use a 1:4 ratio of table salt to white distilled vinegar. It works just fine, can take longer to use than commercially prepared pickle, but great in a pinch. As for the tongs (and anything else that goes into the pickle pot): absolutely no steel! It will contaminate the pickle, anything that gets put in the solution will be covered in copper, and its a pain to clean it all off. Stick to copper or bamboo tongs-in a pinch, use a pair of bamboo chopsticks and rubber-band the ends together (with a bit of paper in between for space) to make them into tongs. If you have lots of little bits you don't want to go "fishing" for in the pickle pot, use a paper coffee filter or a plastic berry basket (if you can find them, not sure how much they're used these days).

    Thank you! Now if you were going to make this into a ring, how would you attach the ring wire onto that back since it has no middle? Could you make a video about that?

    • @EmmyBeanJewelry
      @EmmyBeanJewelry  3 года назад

      That's a great question! It wouldn't be a difficult process, just require lots of precision since it would be two points of contact for soldering. I will add that to my list of "projects to film." :) I'm still working on figuring out my new camera, and hope to do some filming soon.

    Besides aesthetics I was thinking another benefit of cutting out the back is that it allows the gem stone to contact the skin, which some people attribute some benefit but also allow light to shine through some materials. Just a thought

    • @EmmyBeanJewelry
      @EmmyBeanJewelry  4 года назад +1

      You are correct, some people like to have the gemstone touch their skin for a variety of reasons.
      Having "light shine through" is a common misconception, however. When light shines through a translucent/transparent gemstone, it truly shines when that light is reflected back, i.e. the polished metal inside a setting acting like a mirror. Compared to metal, skin isn't very reflective, in fact, it often dulls the look of a translucent/transparent stone and depending on skin tone, changes the look of the gemstone completely. For the most brilliant looking translucent/transparent gemstones, a closed setting is best.

    Thanks for the great video! What are your go-to saw blades and what size do you prefer? I got some from an Etsy shop and they aren't very good quality saw blades and they leave lots of burrs and lots of clean up is necessary. TIA :-)

    • @EmmyBeanJewelry
      @EmmyBeanJewelry  5 лет назад +1

      My go-to saw blades are Laser Gold size 2/0, available exclusively from Rio Grande. For fine detailed sawing, I use 4/0 size. To make the most of any saw blade, be sure to use Bur Life, beeswax... some sort of lubricant so the blade can work more efficiently, and not get gummed up by metal shavings.

    Wait, I'm confused, I thought an open backed bezel was open backed? No back plate. But your video is using a back plate...???

    • @EmmyBeanJewelry
      @EmmyBeanJewelry  3 года назад

      An open backed bezel means there's a backplate with a window cut out of it, there's still something for the gemstone to sit on, otherwise it would fall right through. A bezel setting with zero backplate is a frame bezel... that's a completely different style, with specialty equipment. 😉
