The hike begins with an initial descent into the forest via a dirt road. Enjoy the descent as it doesn't last too long as you'll be doing 1000ft of elevation gain in a mile. Keep an eye on the trail on the right you'll take that up the ridge.
Once you get up the ridge you will get non stop views. You'll pass through a mostly open trail. Sometimes it's dirt and sand, sometimes gravel and rocks. You'll pass Mud Lake and it is muddy.
After Mt Baldy looks like the trail becomes a bike trail. It's downhill initially and the ground gets shifty so may be a good tip use hiking poles. Expect to get the dirt in your mouth as well.
Eventually you'll return to the open facings of Mule's Ears. It'll be sometime until you see Lake Tahoe again but you will get some awesome views of Martis Peak in California.
After 8 miles in, 2 switchbacks lead you to Rifle Peak. To be honest they are kind of mild. You'll need gps to reach the summit as the trail will end abruptly.
The views are nice but there is a tree at the top of the summit. You'll want to make your way towards rose knob using GPS as it's easy to get turned around on the mountain. Also the sand sinks like quick sand.
You will got a pretty intense rock section. Climb up it. Lake Tahoe reappears on your right. Don't get on the trails pass through them. Follow your GPS through the maze of Mule's Ears.
Rose knob is a little off on the map but you can see the stake put in at the summit. Now the task is to find the trail again. Did I say use your GPS?
Now you get to hike back the way you came. Enjoy those views!
