Design youtubers tend to skip over important things like the practicalities of trip hazards, day to day wear and maintenance, safety of smaller housemates, and long term versatility. You're encouraging people to design for real life, not for showrooms. I love it.

    I have a wicker pendant in my dining room and I think the main complaint about it that people don’t realize is that they don’t actually light the space. Having a fixture with a single bulb means you need other lamps in the room to get proper light. I originally had an oversized Edison bulb in it and I had to switch it out for an LED bulb which takes away from the look of the fixture. The single bulb still isn’t enough light so I am moving it to a bedroom where I don’t need as much brightness. I have other lamps in there to offset it. They are nice to look at but aren’t practical as a single statement fixture.

      No hate. I'm the proud owner of a newly purchased ornate gilt mirror. It will be living in my neo-victorian style hallway. The hallway is dark emerald green with dark woodwork so this classic statement piece is essential for the esthetic and to bounce light around a dark space. My mirror cost me £5 from a charity shop so it was an absolute bargain.
      We both have very different styles but we have planned ahead, shopped intentionally and frugally. What little money we have spent has not been wasted if we value and appreciate our purchases. I'm sure we'll both love our statement pieces for years to come. 🙂

When I started putting this into practice I no longer felt guilty about liking things and then trying to work out the calculations in my head on how I would be able to afford to take it home with me. Now I just appreciate the items in the store, and go on about my business. If I really like them I go back for a visit. #dontjudgeme 😂

    Welp, normally, I agree with everything you say but I have to draw the line with the round table. Yes, they are more expensive. I have a nice walnut table that I bought from Domain when it closed a local store in NJ. I’d been eyeing that sucker for more than a year. They finally reduced it to a price I could afford and threw in 4 Biedermeier style chairs. I love them but mainly because my dining rooms have always been perfect squares and they fit like they were designed for the space. PLUS, the table came with a leaf. So, I can expand the table to seat 8 in a pinch. I’ve never had large houses and the round table has always been more than enough. Finally, it’s just gorgeous. My BF is a carpenter and he lusts after it. I consider that an endorsement.

    • @koalaeucalyptus
      @koalaeucalyptus 3 года назад +24

      Oh, I adore round tables as well. Sure, they're not as grand, but to be honest it's a lot easier to fit extra chairs around a round table for a fun game night than it is around a rectangular one. I learned that from barbecuing with my parents: a 4-seater round table has fit 7-8 people easily when it's barbecue time! We'd just carry the round table over a bit and bring some extra chairs... made great memories that way. In my own home, I decided to go for a round table exactly because of that, and the flow around it is great (it's an apartment with dining and sitting integrated).

    • @Fickji
      @Fickji 3 года назад +3

      @@koalaeucalyptus We've got a round table. The rectangle one was just too big for the space we had. We use the family room as a combination microwave counter/dinning/fireplace seating/exercise room so the round table helps consolidate a lot of space. It's a multi purpose room. Especially as one side of the rectangle table couldn't sit a family member because it was hard to get to. The round one makes it easier to maneuver into that part near the window.
      I just need to crochet a table runner or table cloth for it. Or maybe just a round center piece.

    As you are an interior designer, I'm curious about your experience with homes that are aiming for a very "alternative" style? And if you've ever worked with people like that and been able to help them develop their style. :) You often cover very "normal" styles like midcentury modern, farmhouse, minimalist, etc etc. But what about things like cottagecore, french provincial, dark academia, "witchy," etc? I'd love a video from you covering more alternative styles and your opinion on making them work in a home cohesively! For example, have you seen Lulu Sapphire's home? It is VERY extra and beauty and the beast inspired with a more modern color palette!

    IMHO, round tables are fine as long as they are small and have leaves so that in a rectangular room, you get the option to make it functional for a larger group. If there are only two or three people at the table the small round is fine and quite lovely. If you want to have a dinner for 6 - 10, then just throw in a leave or two and you have a rounded rectangular table that gives plenty of walking around space. Additionally, there are no sharp edges to bump into as there is with a true rectangle. Maybe that issue is just mine as I do tend to be a little clumsy at times. :)

    I grew up with an large ornate gilt mirror. It was a wall-hanging mirror, but it came with a table underneath it that was carved just as ornately and painted gold and white with a marble top. It's an antique heirloom from my great grandmother, that I've been told I'll be inheriting because my house has the walls for it and it matches my decor (I like traditional/gilded farmhouse). My parents have always put both in the formal living room (most people would turn it into an office) with the piano and the antique settee. It's just a side table my parents use to decorate seasonally or occasionally put drinks on if we're sitting in that room. It looks best at christmas, since the tree is in the large foyer next to the archway for the room, so you get it's reflection in the large mirror, but the gilded mirror also frames the classical nativity set my parents decorate the table with really nicely.

    I have a large gilded mirror that I’ve had for 30 years. I’ve managed to make it work in all of my homes though agree it can be challenging. Mine is about 6.5 feet high but only about 2.5 feet wide with a nice dimensional but simple frame. I’ve always had it as a floor mirror. I do love it as it helps make my space seem endless and bright. I wouldn’t buy again as you say they’re very expensive but I’m extremely glad I have mine. It in combo with some newer round mirrors really adds some glam. My home is eclectic and would never pass a decorators checklist. I probably purchase a couple of new pieces every decade to keep things looking refreshed. Less is more so I keep things in cupboards and swap out favourite items from time to time. A girlfriend swapped out all of my cushions for new when we sold our last place. That was an amazing transformation. My home is white on white with beiges and greys with some natural woods and pops of colour. I love my space but it must continue to evolve.

    I have inherited several pieces of furniture, two large gilt mirrors and a 4 foot oriental vase from my aunt who had a large home. I was able to find a space for most of them since I also moved to a larger home. I gave a lot of thought to their placement because I wanted to do justice to the pieces but I understand what you are saying- everything doesn’t fit or complement every space even though we like it. One mirror was a little overwhelming for my dining room until I realized I could remove an overhanging part at the top and not ruin the lines and the mirror actually looks better to me. Now it is in proportion and fits nicely in the space above the buffet. My home is very traditional but the large vase is actually a beautiful and unexpected addition to my dining room. The other mirror is larger but goes well in the upstairs hallway just across from the bedroom suite double doors. I have kept the rest of the hallway very simple because the mirror has a real presence and would clash with other pieces. I also kept some of the paintings but replaced others more to my taste when we redecorated most of the rooms. In the end, I’m very glad to have some family heirlooms that have a little history and wonderful memories in my home.

    Gilded mirrors are actually easy to DIY. Most of the stuff can be found on amazon and home depot. All you need is:
    1) A mirror. Preferably an arched or oval mirror.
    2) Center onlay. This goes on top of the mirror. It's the statement piece.
    3) A long onlay to go on the sides and maybe the bottom. *optional
    4) flexible molding trim
    5) A second center onlay to put on the bottom of your mirror *Optional
    6) Extra strength glue (I used gorilla glue).
    7) Gold spray pray paint. You can also use gold leaf paint if you like.
    8) Painters tape.
    First, you need to arrange the onlays and trim on the mirror until you get your desired look. Glue the pieces once you are satisfied with the look. Then you tape up the mirror part so the spray paint doesn't strain the mirror. Then spray paint it gold. Voila!
    Pro tips:
    -Get a mirror from Craig's list or a thrift store. Way cheaper!
    -you can use wood putty to fill the gaps between the onlays and trims. This adds a smoother more customed finish
    -Make sure the design on the onlays and trims are cohesive so they look like one piece when you glue them, together. Take your time and compare each piece before buying.
    My DIY mirror cost me $250. $150 mirror and the rest of the stuff added to about $100. The mirror I wanted cost well over$1,000.

    That said, I think the poufs can work really well when your space is designed for them! I have ADHD and I love sitting on the floor or on a beanbag. I have a super-thick shag rug and a lot of pillows, and once I have a little more room, I'm definitely getting a nice low coffee table. It also helps to be able to stack them or move them under a table when you want them out of the way.
    I'm curious how other countries use poufs, especially ones where sitting on the floor is a lot more common-- like Morocco or Japan. It's funny how "Scandinavian" has become such a recognizable and influential design style, but not many other regions have the same kind of representation.

    Agree on the round dining table in terms of space availability. Our house had a rattan dining table that seats 6 people and because we didn’t have enough space, only 4 people can really go to and fro from their seats easily. But I loved that dining table, because you can put all the food in the middle and its equidistant to all. Also you can chat to all seated well because you’re not too far to the other person.

    The points about the wicker pendant seem to really focus on it being trendy right now with bohemian, natural, and Scandinavian modern styles, but I grew up with a cane pendant from the early 80s above the kitchen table in our house (it matched the caning on the tubular steel frame dinette chairs!) 😂 We never were a “super clean house” family, and I don’t remember it being dirty or difficult, but I definitely think it works with more styles when you look for the shapes outside of the trendy and modern ones. They definitely had cane lampshades, including on pendants, in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and they were used in many interior styles from those decades.

    LOVE your recommendations. I move frequently, and have lived in many different-sized dwellings with a variety of layouts. I do happen to own a round pedestal dining table (48"), but only because a) it has drop leaves that turn it into a 24x48 console, b) I don't have a large family or entertain large groups often and c) it's what worked best at the time I was making the purchase, but could also offer a different configuration to be worth the investment. What I'd rather invest in somewhere in the future is a double-pedestal oval table with inserted leaves that can stretch from a 48" round to a long oval that seats 6-8. For me, investing in pieces is about functional versatility and materials that allow me to refinish as my tastes change.

    Kiva, you are so right about the pieces you mentioned. Lots to consider especially when buying higher priced items. I bought 2 Thomasville leather loveseats for the family room in my former home. They were luxurious and great quality. However, they drove me “crazy.” The leather was so soft that every time someone sat on them, the cushions (both seat and back) would slouch and look messy. I was constantly having to fluff them back into place. When I sold my home, the buyers loved the sofas so much they bought them! So beautiful and long lasting but very high maintenance. Never again.
