    This is exactly why eBay is a no no for gold and silver. I would recommend sticking to the big name companies like apmex , provident metals. For one your metals are insured. And also they have very competitive prices. Apmex offers free shipping at the moment and provident metals has items that you can add on for free shipping. At provident metals your paying about 60 cents over spot for some silver and your metals are once again insured. I don't see a reason to buy anywhere else.

    The magnet test is pretty amazing if you haven't tried it. Most of us have only ever seen magnets either stick, or not. But the weird way silver reacts with a magnet is surprising when you try it yourself. Videos just don't do it justice. I wonder though, if something that is silver plated would do the same thing.

    That fake bar was brass. Had it been pure copper you probably wouldn't have noticed it was fake. Copper is only slightly lighter than silver so the small amount it must be thicker to have correct weight would probably not be noticed as they all seems a little different because of their minting. However on pure copper magnet would slide only a few % faster than on pure silver. Not something anybody would notice unless done on a lab in controlled environment with something of exact same size to compare with and with sophisticated measuring instruments.
    The "funny" thing is that making them of pure copper wouldn't make them that much more expensive to make as brass to begin with is most copper anyway. The zinc however alters is ability to conduct current significantly and that's why the magnet slide down fast - there's almost no eddy currents compared to pure silver or copper.

    Sorry to hear that. One of the many problems with ebay.

    • @silverbuyer
      @silverbuyer 10 лет назад +1

      Not just a eBay problem. My buddy bought a fake 2013 panda from his LCS, sent me a pic saying he was all excited and I immediately noticed it was a fake. A LCS owner here picked up 200ozs of rounds from the local PM dealer and found a fake in one of the tubes. That same LCS owner also bought a 5oz silver plated cooper round from a customer. If you educate yourself like I have you will never buy fakes unless it's on purpose. I've notified tons of eBay sellers they were selling fakes and most were big sellers that had no idea. I've only ever bought two fakes and that was on purpose because a guy had a lot of 12 rounds listed and he had 2 rare 1986 Engelhard Everest rounds in that lot that I wanted real bad so I won the lot, returned the two fakes for a refund and sold the two everest rounds on eBay for $115 buy it now and $68 at auction so I ended up with 8ozs I paid like $30 for after it was all said & done.

  • @virt1one
    @virt1one 9 лет назад

    BTW the "slide the magnet" test you were doing is an intersting idea for a test, I like that! That effect is called "magnetic braking", look up "eddy currents" (or watch several videos here) for more information. That will unfortunately happen with a lot of non-ferrous metals. I wasn't able to quickly find a table of what metals brake better, but I believe its proportional to elecrtical conductivity. So silver, gold, *and* coper *and* aluminum will all brake well, with copper being the most popular for both braking demonstrations. (*and* coin counterfeiting) I tested a large copper (999) coin as well as an aluminum heat sink, a Morgan and Peace (900 silver 100 copper), and a Sealand (999 silver) dollar. All four braked well, including the heat sink, with very slighty better braking on the pure copper, too minor to measure reliably by my simple testing. Angle and surface texture introduce too much uncertainty.

  • @GeorgeBonez
    @GeorgeBonez 6 лет назад

    Man I have built the ultimate mag-tester for both coins and bars. I don’t remember where I read about how to do this or I would pass the info on but you take two very powerful computer Hard Drive magnets and bolt them together making a slot between them to drop your coin or bar through. Silver passes through very slowly as fakes just drop like a rock and of course steel sticks so hard that it’s actually hard to remove it.
    Best mag-tester I’ve ever used! Maybe I’ll get over my cam-fear and make a vid in this. Lol

    The specific gravity test several people have demonstrated is non-destructive. In combination with the magnet and weight test, you should be fairly confident of legitimacy. To be sure, only destructive tests will prove it real.

I play a lot of video games and my friends would always try to save a few bucks by buying downloadable games off ebay. Some of the games they bought were hacked/stolen accounts, and when they logged into the game they'd be banned while a Chinese guy made off with their money. Over my life time I've realized across every industry....that it is better to buy from a well known reliable resource than to try and save a few bucks, because in the end the people that paid the lower premiums will wind up likely paying more than I do after they collect several ounces of fake silver.

    Thanks for the heads up. I’m just now starting I’m buying 2 pieces every two weeks after payday, 3 American Eagles to every 2 Maple Leaf coins, additionally I’ve purchased two one oz silver pour billions all from a Local Coin Shop. Is this a pretty good practice? Soon I’ll be buying online from one of the big companies but I uncomfortable buying from EBay. Any suggestions?

    What acid are you using? I thought the nitric acid/muriatic acid chemical is supposed to be a red brown if it is actually silver. It's supposed to turn a blue or turquoise color if fake.

    they plate it with silver so it looks real. But the diagmanetic property of silver is unmatched, good way to find a fake. Where did you buy that fake bar?
    if you go to ebay and type clad gold or silver bars, you will find hundreds of them.

      +VIDEOSUPERHIGHWAY Copper is even more Diamagnetic so if they filled it with pure copper and plated it with silver and tweeked the weight the world would never know. Coins are a lot harder to fake unless the dye sneeks out the mint a well trained eye is the only detector.

    I got 2 fake silver coins off of EBay. Got them replaced. Now I only purchase from legitimate bullion dealers on EBay.

    Too bad our country doesn't mint silver for the public to invest in unlike US, buying those investment grade bars like Johnson Matthey, coins like Silver Eagle, and rounds cost more than 2x the current spot value here, while the junk silvers (when our country used to mint silver as currency) cost 50% premium over spot due to numismatic and collector's value. And for those fake bars I saw a lot of them being sold around like a dollar or less in Alibaba like Silvertowne, Scottsdale, Northwest Territorial tagged as "commemorative", "souvernir", "silver plated" which you can customize the alloys used, which if you want it to be non-magnetic like a real silver you'll choose copper/brass. This I think is being resold by the people who bought those in China in other online shops like Ebay with misleading titles or outright lying about its composition to make a quick buck, which is a very bad and unethical way of doing business...sad panda face

    I buy my Silvertowne bars on eBay, directly from Silvertowne. My bars are all real.

    I did buy a 1 oz bar from OPM directly and it did not fit in a plastic holder as well. Just an FYI. Best to leave those in the sealed plastic sleeve they send the in.

    There is a new non-contact magnet test for silver. It might help detect these fakes.

    Just purchased multiple Silver T. Bars. 1oz. To the 10oz. Any many. Was from BGASC. Do these large volume dealers test before selling? I'd like to know. What's cheapest way to test? Where to get rare earth magnet?

    Never buy from private dealers on eBay. Go for reputable Bullion dealers that sell on eBay like Apmex

    I have real silvertown bars and i already spot the difference, they are the same ones you have except the lettering is much finer on yours.

    I try and stick to the main 3/4 dealers online. Supposedly, they have things they do to test. Take it for what that is worth. I still weigh and do a ping test for coins. I have an app for that one on my cell. Bars of course are harder to tell.

    Thank brother. By Christ, that's pretty cool to help people out in a cool manner. I have a fake but knew it was no paid a doller for it to tell better apart from the fakes and reals. These people that are doing fakes obviously don't know Jesus and that he's real and that it's not a game. So they rip people off and there just sick in there own way. I am sorry you got, got. Hey, save it for the future maybe the brass will be worth a lot
