Behold, the evil 👺Zeed👺 head-banging that heavy metal hair around to the tune of an expanded version of "The Ninja Master." For many Revenge of Shinobi fans, this was a stressful race to figure out how to slay this evil foe before Joe Musashi's beloved Naoko lost her Z-axis under the weight of a massive concrete ceiling. I wanted to play up the frantic panic and chaos of this song while still retaining those "breaks" in the mayhem that encouraged players to stop and wonder what those holes in the sides of the wall were all about. With 2 more songs to go, this soundtrack is almost complete.
Ninja Master: Hello, Musashi! So glad to see you again... I was wondering if you'd make it out of my labyrinth alive... Ha ha ha ha! Joe: You! You murdered my people... MY MASTER!! Ninja Master: Ha ha ha ha! Still holding on to that shred of hope that the Orbu will be avenged? It's far too late, Musashi! Your time is running out... _and so is hers!_ (He throws a switch, causing a stone ceiling to start descending on her chamber!) Joe: NAOKO!! Ninja Master: Your clan's legacy ends here, Musashi! *_I WILL KILL YOU!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAA!!_* (Begin the final battle! Will you succeed or will Naoko die?!)
Yuzo Koshiro just had a thing for making his boss themes really short for this game - except this one was not as easily loopable as Terrible Beat; despite this, it was still a very tension-inducing tune, especially with the fate of Naoko in the balance! Joe Musashi is now up against his greatest threat: Willow Smith! (Now known mononymously as 'Willow'... not the movie... not the TV series based on said movie-) We've waited a long time for this one, and it did not disappoint! I am really happy what you did with the song to transition out of the final note of the original song to give it a seamless flow throughout! That was probably one of the few gripes of this song, as hearing that buildup just doesn't hit as hard after the 20th time hearing it in the same fight (i.e., not having died to this guy... though he probably is way harder than he looks, I've never fought against him) The expansion really gives me final boss energy with the fast-paced, high tempo beat! While the original has a slower, more sinister tone to it, the expansion -- especially starting at 1:20 -- makes it truly feel like the fight of Joe's life! And the way you kept the primary motif of the song throughout the piece makes it just feel like it fits in the game so well~ Something that I also adore about your songs is the detailed animations that go with each track; not only do you have The Ninja Master of Neo Zeed whipping his head back and forth, but you also made it a point to show the ceiling slowly lowering towards Naoko (shoot the holes in the wall, Joe!) AND even moving the chain slowly to match? Sometimes I wonder if you work on these about as half as much as you work on the songs -- which is a very good thing I might add, considering how long it takes to compose these expansions, add the instruments, adjust the settings etc. They add so much atmosphere that makes your tracks enjoyable to watch just as well as listen to. Just... beautiful all around!
Thanks dude, I always appreciate your in-depth analysis of each track! That was the original intention, yeah. The buildup in the original song is very anti-climatic, almost like someone shut off the sustain. I wanted to maintain that level of deep-rooted tension throughout the entire fight until it circles around back where it started from. The animations are my way of making each video more fun and immersive. Fans love these games for a reason, so I like to put a lot of emphasis on making an accompanying animated video, even if it's just minor. The amount of keyframing that goes into these videos is pretty substantial. Can take anywhere from 4-8 hours per vid, but it's worth it.
I really hope you tackle Super Adventure Island eventually. The entire soundtrack of that game has that classic Yuzo Koshiro touch but the short music loops leave something to be desired.
Oh and btw, the first time I got to this boss and got the unexpected ending I was crushed!!!! I didn’t know what I was meant to do. Good excuse to start the game over though 😅
