Only after the end of part 2 do you realize how much has been invested in this trailer. How much does this describe Ellie's state of mind throughout the game. It's amazing. This story does not let go. I don't know about the others, but I empathized with Ellie from beginning to end. She is a hostage to this emotional devastation caused by the loss of Joel.
After playing part 1 and part 2 for the first time back to back, and seeing Ellie change, you realize the exact thing about Joel in the first and Ellie in the second. They both did horrifying things for the sake of a bigger thing even if that bigger thing is completely lost in the violence, they made Ellie realistic by making her, ever so slightly, a piece of shit. She treats Dina awfully, she is so hell bent on revenge that she leaves her whole family and ends up getting her friend killed. But you can so easily empathize with her because it’s Joel we’re talking about
I still feel the game was missing a point. Abby. Abby could have been such a interesting character imagine they would have swapped Dina’s Role with Abbys as Ellie’s Companion. Like I don’t know Ellie searching for Joel’s Killers but doesn’t know how Abby looks or that was her and then combining this story with this whole Scar thing and that Ellie helps out Abby or something like that and they discover the truth about each other and the 2nd part of the game is about Abby vs Ellie that would have been much more epic and most people wouldn’t despise Abby
I agree with empathizing with Ellie. My only problem with the game was the large parts where you play as Abby. It felt like work getting through her parts with the separate skill tree. It was entirely too long playing as a person that was established already as an enemy in my mind (until the point Ellie kills the one person that makes her pretty irredeemable from that point on, but that''s almost the end of the game)
i swear when he said “what are you doing kiddo?” my heart like shattered. that really was her father figure and he lead her in all the right directions in her teen years. i truly believed he shaped her into who she became. it’s almost like she lost her better half
i mean ... he did lead her, but in all the right directions? he’s the reason she’s a cold blooded killer who doesn’t know how to properly handle her emotions.
@@sgtmian wasn’t really his fault tho. If we all were living in a world where humanity is pretty much gone, almost all of us would be just like him. Doing brutal things just to stay alive is something that we probably all do.
@@chuckbecker5635 i don't deny that, just making it clear that joel really fucked ellie up, as parents sometimes do. even though they're trying to do the right thing.
@@chuckbecker5635 I think they mean by Joel dragging Ellie out of the hospital. Knowing that you yourself is the cure to humanity and the person who you trust takes you away with out giving you a choice, it probably ruin you.
@@sgtmian I agree with your take on it. That’s why, at the end of the game, Ellie finally gets redeemed by not killing Abby and the game ends with a butterfly on her guitar. She evolved. Just like the butterfly evolves from the caterpillar. (And yes, I know the correct term isn’t ‘evolve,’ but she evolved as a character.)
he Last of Us is probably the most emotionally scarring video game series ever made. Every time I hear this song, I almost cry because it just brings back all the emotions I felt for these characters. It's so beautiful and sad and depressing all at the same time. Just like the game.

@@seromniconciente8689 People say that we hate the game because Joel died. No, I already expected him to die. What I didn't expect was how BS that lead to his death was. How can a person that has been on guard for more than 20+ years of his life blindly trust a stranger when he knows that people are out there to kill him?
@@buggart he had the necessery development in the flashbacks to make it seem in character Also it was a tough sitouation They had no choice but to act friendly Now he could be a bit more reluctant perhaps But he just saved her life and its safe to assume he has encountered many travellers like her who haven't harmed him in the past
@@poutsamouni5483 it also should be acknowledged that if joel was anyone else at all, abby and her group would’ve treated them with respect and kindness just like he was doing to them, and so it’s not completely out of the park for him to trust the newcomers. but it’s because of the decisions joel made in his past coupled with the fact that he was just unlucky enough to cross paths with the exact people who were looking to kill him that lead to his death. he’s not john wick, and it’s very clearly shown in the first game that 80% of the time the only reason they even survive some encounters is pure luck. joel’s luck had to run out eventually
@@buggart I didn't even cared much about Joel's non sense death. But selling us a revenge story that doesn't end up in revenge and even worst, making us play as Abby and forcing us to beat the shit out our girl Ellie? Nah, they done fucked up
Too bad the trailer was pretty much false advertisement, leading people to believe this was another Joel + Ellie adventure, only to end up with a clunky mess of a story. So many people got bamboozled by that and promply refunded it the moment they realised how much of a shitty move this was from the company that made the first game.
@@GGWyzzy No, that was the _second_ trailer. The second one blatantly lied. This one didn't. It was more ambiguous and only on a rewatch can you pick up the subtle hints suggesting that Joel's presence in the scene can't be physical.
@@rhondahoward8025 yup, just searched for it and indeed they blatantly lied on that one. Could swear it was on this one and it kinda was ambiguous here so I thought this was the trailer full of lies. The even removed the comments on that one, that´s what I call shitty damage control.
Man this trailer is heartbreaking after finishing the game. When Joel says “what are you doing kiddo” it kinda sounded like to me “don’t go through with what you’re about to do”. Joel lost everything because of revenge and he’s about to watch Ellie go through the same thing because of what he did. Man I still love the first game more but this story was just a work of art. I understand if it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but you got to take risks sometimes with your characters to get a story like this. I respect everyone’s opinion though.
@@MrRomaVALE I mean, in the first game Joel killed dozens of people just on the inference that they had something to do with Ellie's detainment. I can't say all of those killings were motivated by revenge, but there was a fair amount of bloodshed that was justified in his view by the perceived wrongs of the people involved. He wasn't merely doing it to get from point a to point b - he was reveling in the violence all the way there, and in his being the one to save Ellie in the end he passed that loss of self down to her.
@@obsequiarch7271 Never felt like he reveled in it, more that it was a sense of urgency and fear of losing Ellie. I don't see how Joel acted in a vengeful act towards the cannibals, yet the cannibals did when they figured out that Ellie was the one who rode with Joel back when they were attacked by a party from the cannibal group, which that was self defence on Joel and Ellie's side. It was made pretty clear that they would've killed Joel and Ellie in an act of vengeance for their people, but David being the leader, could coerce his people to leave Ellie alive as a form of perverted pedophilia as his intention, but Joel was clearly gonna be killed if caught. Also, I don't agree that Joel passed his loss of self onto Ellie. That scene is made to showcase the return of Joel humanity and fatherhood, whilst Ellie's is that of taking a harsh blow towards her innocence, yet there is no loss of herself through the rest of the game. She still maintains optimism and hope.
V M Yh ik I jus can’t believe what happened but I had this theory they didn’t show Joel bc it was jus in her imagination bc of his passing and all and she is like saying it to him she feels like and it’s in her mind tha Joel is questioning if it’s a bad idea but it’s Ellie so when she has it on her mind u can’t snap her out of it
Me too. I just got past the brutal (spoiler kinda) you know what that happens about 2 hours in and damn... I know what I’ll be doing for the next few days. I had to rewatch this trailer and it just gave me the shivers.
Even back when this trailer released they had no idea what they were doing with this game. Apart of me thinks they originally did not plan on doing *SPOILERRRRRR* Joel so dirty in the first 20 minutes of the game.
I think the saddest thing about this game is how realistic it is. If humanity was plunged into chaos like the way this story happened, people would eventually fight and kill each other for resources and survival. And these tragic cycles of vengeance would start-not because people wanted them to happen, but because they "did what they had to" to survive.
The 300 pound muscle woman and pregnant woman fighting zombies without any inner conflicts were especially realistic. You go girl!!! 😂 I especially loved the part where a main character got shot in the head and lived with no considerable brain damage lmao
@@Evan_Stark keep watching hate videos instead of playing the game and formulating your own opinions!! Your comment is a certified dumbass comment. Simpleton.
After seeing... THAT scene... this trailer has a whole new meaning now. I mean, all this trailer is telling me now is that ellie is suffering from delusions and mental collapse... and Joel is a figment.
This was by far the worst "big" game to be released for many many years. Story line made absolutely no sense, if you dont feel that way yet, replay the game with the knowledge you have from the previous game on each known character, and try to make sense of the story and u will see that it was not just a bad game but I still cant believe the devs got paid to release this game. Awful i dont mind the ending, the way the story went just the reasoning behind the key parts of the story line was so broken. It was as if there were 6 or 7 different authors all combined to make this story and I would not be surprised if this actually was the case. The entire game felt rushed into production and so many things in the story did not add up.
I remember reading a comment of a guy who said that here Joel is already dead, is like a ghost, because he came out from the light and he is like a vision of Ellie. He said this because he thought that Ellie wanted to revenge Joel by killing his killers. I read that comment 2 years ago. That was fucking true. edit: why did I get all these likes? omg I'm not used to comment xd
Not that surprising at all really, it was a little too obvious since they said you’d be playing as Ellie. Only surprising part was how damn early they killed him off, wasn’t even 30mins in
@@awawawawwawaa7746 Literally impossible to avoid spoilers for any game.... My solution is, when I play any new game, I don't look at social meadia and i don't look at comments related to the game. One example, when I played HZD i stopped playing it and i came back 2 months ago, I couldn't remember where the stors ended (i kinda knew but just a little)..
I played the last of us back in 2013 when I was younger with my father. This game has a special place in my heart my father recently passed away by an overdose and the last of us is really the only good memory I have with him
Ellie is such an exceptional character. She is kind, generous, lovely and yet at the same time brave, dedicated and vengeful. I never loved any character in a game this much.
She's not generous or lovely, she's just a teenager with tons of flaws, selfish, with a real part of darkness. This makes her an ambiguous character, just like her father - and most importantly, that's what makes a damn good character.
@@t4ncho I disagree with your opening few words, but agree with the rest. We see in the first game, how she sees beauty in a world gone to shit, and tries to help others. I do agree though, that due to all that went on with her, even outside of what happens in this game, that she was born to violence, and is a natural at it, which brings around her dark side. Dina says something in the game at the party when Ellie is feeling anxious "oh Ellie I think every one in this room should be terrified of you" - and she's right; Ellie's rage is almost boundless, and it almost breaks her as she loses everything going on this path. Its enthralling and horrifying to watch, and does make her a terrific character to follow.
Joel:"What are you doing, kiddo?" Ellie:"I'm gonna find, and i'm gonna kill every last one of them" Joel:"You think i would let you do this on your own?"
SalsaCookies Or after walking in and finding them all dead. Maybe she knew them and that’s why she seemed so vengeful when she said she wanted to, “kill every last one of them”, and why she seemed upset and stretched her fingers before she started playing.
The corpses in the house are probably their allies, here's my hypothesis; Joel and Ellie went outside for supplies or something but then when they came back, the house is ransacked while they heard a vehicle trailblazing away from the area, Joel tried to chase the vehicle. With a bad feeling in her gut, Ellie stayed behind to look for survivors only to find both of their allies dead, minutes later: Joel failed to hunt down the men who ransacked their base and came back to meet Ellie. It's probably a revenge or a warning. Either way, it's just a theory.
When this trailer dropped for me, it was 100% clear that Joel here is dead and she was talking about hunting down his killers, how this wasn't picked up by other people I will never know. The imagery of Joel appearing out of white light, the lyrics alluding to a lone gunman wandering the land hoping for mercy for their actions, Ellie's direct words, those words and the hateful, sad tone could only be used for one person, and the last identifier that Joel is dead, we don't see his face, nor do we see him properly at all, we see faint glimpses of him, like he's a ghost.
@@somethingofascientist58 It seems some people were totally caught off guard by his death, some people expected the second game to be pretty much the first but with more guns
i saw all those joel is dead theories but refused to believe they'd kill him like that, and the fake joel reveal from that other trailer (where it was actually jesse in-game) just kind of confirmed that joel wouldn't be the reason for her revenge

Of particular note to consider now that we've already completed the game that definitely allude to Joels fate: * He walks in surrounded by light. Also if you've seen his fate you probably wouldnt want to
I remember when the trailer first dropped, a fair number of people thought it seemed at least somewhat apparent that avenging Joel was gonna be the central focus of the game. It made the backlash to it when it became a reality seem very odd to me
It's a metaphor, analogy or whatever it's called. Joel asks her if she's going to continue (with the revenge) and even though the idea of him tells her that she is not sure, she does it the same, looking and hoping to kill each one. And the song is also perfect, because it represents the same, that no one would agree with her in what she chooses but she already accepts that she's not walking the path of right. It's genius and now I get it.
“You’re really gonna go through all of this” man, that was genius edit: i didn’t even know i commented this a year ago, but i’m so glad people took note of it!
@@chuckbecker5635 "Go through with this" means "Are you really doing that?", "Are you really going to finish what you've started/planned?". While "Go through all of this." means - suffer/endure through series of events. Doesn't have the same meaning at all.

@@madskillzy2k Oh really? How? Because this trailer made me think back then that Joel will get murdered. Not only me, I've seen many others predict that.
The first time i watch the trailer, i said, "Well she is on a rampage about someone else, maybe the death of Riley or a close one, family" but after the game came out and Joel died, i finally understand that the trailer was the mind of Ellie, and that Joel is only "like" a ghost or a flashback, you see him totally clean and calm (dead already) asking to Ellie if she is really going through all that killing spree, following the path of vengeance for his death. So the trailer really told you that Joel was already dead without playing the game at least for 5 minutes. Just amazing!

Coming back to watch this after several completions of TLoU2 and it never hit me until JUST NOW that Joel walks out of an impercievable light (symbolic of him being gone) and him walking up and questioning her is actually her mind and not because hes actually there.
So in the teaser's that joel is in, we don't really see Joel's face, maybe thats a symbol to Joel's death and a symbol that joel isn't really there and Ellie is just hallucinating...
The main symbol to Joel's death is the fact that he is hardly in any of the trailers and when he is it's at the beginning and not throughout the scenes
Joel isn't there. He's a memory. She doesn't respond to his question and she doesn't look at his direction. To me this indicates that he's not really there (besides from being in her mind).
After watching the gameplay trailer at E3 maybe it’s Ellie’s girlfriend they killed and now she’s all pissed and wants to kill everyone. Please Joel don’t be dead...
Savannah Echeverria So Ellie imagined Joel walking down the hall and seeing all the people she's already killed? That makes no sense. It comes across like Ellie is after revenge and Joel went after her but caught up after she already finished killing off all the enemies.
Sri Alekhya Nanduri Yeah exactly I was expecting Ellie and Joel to do things together again just like before and the game blew that off in the first 2 hours of game
if you look carefully there were all the signs that joel would be dead... him coming from the light, him asking her "are YOU really gonna go through with this", and her words full of hate... it's just that we didn't wanna see it
The 1:55 mark - the blood representing a tear falling down her face makes is so heart breaking and much more sense after beating the game this past weekend. @@miertje3131 I don't but in this trailer Ellie said: "I'm gonna find and I'm gonna kill every last one of them.'' So yeah, that's why I wrote this comment. :D
And it makes sense, deciding not to go through with it is an important moment for her character. The hatred that Ellie harbors for Abby is an externalized reflection of the hatred Ellie feels towards herself. Why? Well Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially because she didn't get a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a mirror because Ellie also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I'd say in a way that was more painful for Joel, and that was by distancing herself from him and ending her relationship with him. She hates herself for torturing him like that and not restoring their relationship when there was time. That's the real pain she has been avoiding facing during this entire revenge quest. When she has the flashback to the scene on the porch with Joel and spares Abby, she's not just forgiving Abby, she's really forgiving herself and finally coming to terms with what happened between her and Joel, so she leaves his guitar in the house to rest and allows herself to start a new life.

The sad thing about this game is that people die so quickly and you can’t have a reaction to it.. like you’re just kind of like oh well and then you have to move on.
I think part of that is intentional? I dunno, I’d imagine in that world you would often lose people and have to just move on. Tess’ death in the first game is sorta reminiscent. There are certain times where both games slow down and give you a second to process what happened, like after Henry and sam died, and in tlou2, after Joel died. A moment to breathe and feel before pressing forwards. Even Jessie’s death, which I found devastating because I LOVED Jessie, is fitting in the context of the world. How many people in the world of tlou go just like that? How many people as either Joel or Ellie have we shot while they walk beside their friends? In a world where nothing is guaranteed and death is a constant companion, I’m glad we were able to see that aspect. (Also, it adds to the way ellie internalized Joel’s behaviours and lessons. In the first game he was very strictly “people die. We move on. Don’t talk about it.” In tlou2 we see Ellie carry that with her, mentioning in her journal how she’s unable to talk about Joel or Jessie and wonders how Dina does so easily. It’s another way in which Ellie picked up on Joel and mirrored him.)
I'm blown away that a game use the right chord positions and string plucks as real life. I'm a guitar teacher, and what she is playing and where her hands are... they are correct.
I can see now that this is her conscience conflicting with each other. She can picture Joel questioning her loss of sanity for revenge but she just can't let it go.
While Ellie killed everyone in the house playing the guitar, she’s literally having PTSD after Joel’s death. He really isn’t in the house with her. It’s all in her mind. THAT’S CRAZY

I’ve never played a game quite as empathetic as this, I realized I was experiencing what Ellie was, and it killed me. The emotion evoked and the story told in tlou2 are masterful examples of how art can touch the lives of millions. God I love this game

Spoilers dude
Or that they lied for marketing
i swear when he said “what are you doing kiddo?” my heart like shattered. that really was her father figure and he lead her in all the right directions in her teen years. i truly believed he shaped her into who she became. it’s almost like she lost her better half
i mean ... he did lead her, but in all the right directions? he’s the reason she’s a cold blooded killer who doesn’t know how to properly handle her emotions.
@@sgtmian wasn’t really his fault tho. If we all were living in a world where humanity is pretty much gone, almost all of us would be just like him. Doing brutal things just to stay alive is something that we probably all do.

The trailer is the best thing about the game.

Exactly...
Wait, when did Joel ever have revenge?

I think the saddest thing about this game is how realistic it is. If humanity was plunged into chaos like the way this story happened, people would eventually fight and kill each other for resources and survival. And these tragic cycles of vengeance would start-not because people wanted them to happen, but because they "did what they had to" to survive.
Exactly. There’s no right or wrong. Just decisions made by humans based in what seems right for them

@@alimoghaddar3571this trailer was sort of fake out. They didn’t want to give away the twist.

SalsaCookies Or after walking in and finding them all dead. Maybe she knew them and that’s why she seemed so vengeful when she said she wanted to, “kill every last one of them”, and why she seemed upset and stretched her fingers before she started playing.
Definitely not psychotic

* He's oddly clean (for the most part) meanwhile Ellie looks like she's been in a war
* You never see his face. Almost as if he's a shade. Also if you've seen his fate you probably wouldnt want to
How you gonna do me like that😭😭 now I’m more sad
I think it's also beautiful how he appears just when ellie starts playing the guitar. Because it was their thing. :(
I remember when the trailer first dropped, a fair number of people thought it seemed at least somewhat apparent that avenging Joel was gonna be the central focus of the game. It made the backlash to it when it became a reality seem very odd to me
It's a metaphor, analogy or whatever it's called. Joel asks her if she's going to continue (with the revenge) and even though the idea of him tells her that she is not sure, she does it the same, looking and hoping to kill each one. And the song is also perfect, because it represents the same, that no one would agree with her in what she chooses but she already accepts that she's not walking the path of right. dont forget The Murder hornet
Fear Judas Just watched a video on it. Honestly fuck 2020.
Or you know.... we got a completely different game
Why Joel then in every single trailer ? Its scam
We learned that Ellie has PTSD so this kinda makes sense in a way.
Ellie’s singing has so much meaning which makes the song 10x better
You notice the window next to her is the title screen in the first one 😱😱😱
Ohh shit!!!
Woah!!
Good deduction Watson🕵
Nah its not.

After watching the gameplay trailer at E3 maybe it’s Ellie’s girlfriend they killed and now she’s all pissed and wants to kill everyone.
Please Joel don’t be dead...
I thought Joel died and she was just imagining him here to confirm that she's killing for revenge.
I hope, no offense but Joel is the best and I dont want him to die like ever and I know that's selfish but like so is Joel so yeah
he's in the fucking video.
Savannah Echeverria So Ellie imagined Joel walking down the hall and seeing all the people she's already killed? That makes no sense. It comes across like Ellie is after revenge and Joel went after her but caught up after she already finished killing off all the enemies.
Not to mention, in the gameplay trailer, a guy says to Ellie, "Your old man scares me."
The way Joel fades in from the fog is beautiful yet haunting. As if her song conjured his spirit from the other side.

The fact that Joel is dead at this point and Ellie is just talking to him in her mind
Ellie: “I’m going to find, and kill every last one of them”
Neil Druckmann: *”Well yes, but actually no”*
They hadn’t decided who lives and who dies yet lol
@@cynicalidealist11 100%. At least i see more people defending this amazing game. You got two perspectives on loss and avenging said loss. Both were right and wrong, but i think it was so perfectly crafted. I loved it. 10/10.
@@InfectedElite People aren't defending because there's no way you can change people's mind about the game, if you play with a open mind you will have an amazing experience, and if you want to see SJW in this or just hate about it, then that's what you getting from the game.
This trailer for exemple, i think it's Ellie in the path of Abby to canada, whenever you play the guitar in the game, you remember Joel and that's what happening there.
People are hating because Joel dies, the game is about reality in fucked world, you can have your loved character, but life does not have one.

They should’ve give us a choice then. Such a disappointment

You don't get it
Guess what, it happend in part 1 with Henry, Tess, Sam, Malene just to name a few.

The more I look back at tlou 2, the more the INTENTION to it all strikes me. So many details in this game serve a specific purpose, so many tiny cogs in the bigger picture.
