  • The M20 motorway is the main route for cross-Channel traffic reaching the rest of Britain, running for 52 miles/84km between the M25 London Orbital at junction 3 and the A20 at Folkestone. The Maidstone bypass was one of the UK's first motorways to open in 1960, but the motorway wasn't completed until 1991 in preparation for the opening of the Channel Tunnel.
In the past the M20 has frequently been partially closed with Operation Stack whenever there was serious disruption to cross-Channel traffic, and HGVs would be stacked up for many miles on the closed road until the disruption had ended. This has now been replaced by Operation Brock, where movable barriers would create a contraflow for most traffic, with HGVs being held on the opposite carriageway.
This video shows a westbound journey along the M20 motorway, from junction 3 for the M26 motorway at Addington to junction 1 for the M25 London orbital motorway, A20 & B2173 at Swanley.
    Filming date: September 2024.
