I get a lot of self-help from RUclips videos but your work is by far the best and puts everybody elses to shame. I just saved about $1,700 by going in and diagnosing my Hybrid battery using your videos. Turns out. The bus Bars were corroded a little bit. I cleaned them with a wire brush and put it all back together and it works fine. I even bought some battery cells because I thought for sure one or two of them would be bad as I have 207,000 miles on my 2013 Prius. All of my cells tested good I guess the other ones will be for backup. Thank you so much for the professional job on the video and taking the time to do this you are awesome!
OMG, you just nailed it at 2:55 that switch looks so simple and should be a no brainer but I got too careless to pay attention to the click when pushed forward then causing me to believe the hybrid battery needed to be replaced since with that switch not closed completely it threw all the dashboard lights on and the engine never gets into ready mode. Thanks a lot...you saved me a trip to the dealer and a lot of downtime!👏👏👏🙏🙏
My compliments on one of the very best, well done, best presented DIY videos I've ever watched here on RUclips (and I've watched a LOT of them on a LOT of subjects.) Both this and the battery rebuild video were absolutely great. The videoing was great too. Superb lighting and angles, with great closeups when needed. The sound levels were perfect, the the articulate speaking, and the succinctness of the tutorial, just all of it, was great! I almost feel guilty for not having to pay for this kind of expert information. Anyone that gives this video a thumbs down is an idiot, plain and simple! Thank you for the time and effort you put into this video!
I've watched a lot of do-it-yourself videos on RUclips. The guys usually do a lot of talking and a lot of explaining that they don't have to. I like this mechanic. He's thorough. He does not leave out any details for example pulling in certain areas not from The Middle excetera. It's obviously he's been doing this for years he's very educated in his line of work I would definitely watch more videos of his if I ever needed his help again.
First I rarely comment on videos, but your video being so detailed made me and my stepson feel so confident that we could do it ourselves that we did.. I went over to LKQ Pick-A-Part purchased a used hybrid battery for about $750 with a 6-month warranty. And follow your detailed step by step tutorial and you know what it worked perfectly!! And it only took like 2 hours we really took our time also wow is it difficult to get back in without getting the hose (it was a 2010) or the wires underneath the new battery... Phenomenal video thank you so much you've saved us thousands of dollars in repair cost.
This is the ABSOLUTE BEST and MOST descriptive video I've found. If you follow EXACTLY how this guy has shown, you will have no problems! Thanks man!! Saved me a couple grand!
This link shows how to use orange deactivator plug as a tool to remove orange clips. priuschat.com/threads/removal-of-orange-locking-caps-on-hybrid-battery-case.201631/
Yeah. and this guy is a stupid man that break the clip, instead to use that tool. When I see this thing, i understand why some mechanics is good, and why some is stupid.
I am echoing Mark Nixon. This is a fantastic video. It is by far the best DIY video I have ever watched. Very thorough and easy to follow. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this video, and for ultimately saving us all a bunch of money.
Thanks so much for the video, had the dreaded "check hybrid system" error come up on a 2010 and thanks to your video I had the battery out in 25min, first attempt! Found all cells balanced at 8.06-8.1V with corroded screw terminals in each cell bus bar. For now I cleaned them, reassembled, cleared error by 12V battery disconnect, now waiting to see if it comes back. Thanks to your video I can pull it apart again and test cells of it happens again and I have more time!
@@KaizoGC161 so turns out the cells fail, it's not terminal related. Checking voltage is not enough, you need an Android app "dr Prius" with a compatible odb2 Bluetooth adapter and can work out which cells are going bad and replace them with used ones. A hobby battery charger is more accurate, need to remove cell terminal connections and test capacity of each. Most hobby chargers for li-ion do NiMH too. Eventually found I had to replace 12 out of the 28, luckily got some used cells similar Ah rating. 2 years later error came back, 2 more original cells went bad. Replaced those but new cells are higher capacity so pack is unbalanced and hybrid error comes up weekly. We now know to just reset it via the dr Prius app. When I have more time I'll pull it apart again and change the order of the cells (pair new higher capacity cells with less capacity ones. I made the mistake of putting the new ones in 1 group so car reads them vastly different to old). Basically our entire pack aged prematurely, at 180,000km and 10 years old, hot climate (Brisbane) they are all pretty low capacity (about 2Ah, new ones are 4Ah) so really need to just replace the whole thing with a new battery from Toyota for $2000AUD. That'll buy it a long life extension, might not be worth it financially but EVs are too expensive here still so I'll help it going for another few years then sell and get a used Tesla! Hope this helps someone!
Thanks for a great video! Great work! I followed important step from 04:00 to 17:00 which easy to understand and got new hydrid battery from dealer replaced and done smoothly.
Spend 2 days try to figure it out why my ct 200H wont start after servicing the hybrid batt,.... frustrated taking off the 85lbs plus hybrid batt in and out of the car i actually done everything correctly except that last push (anyone keep forgetting) on the orange service plug,... Thanks GOD
Alexander Tyler I know what you went thru I went through a similar path minus all weight removing the battery. Now that your car runs bc of this simple but crucial switch you can care less about the pain, sweat, and wasted time you went 😂😂
You make it look so easy! I have a question: is there a City College that teaches you specificity about the Toyota Prius or do you have to learn watching someone and practice? Great video by the way.
At around the 15 min point you said you could touch the two wires going to the inverters, but keep in mind the inverters have large caps that could possibly hold up to 650Vdc if they didn't bleed off! It's rare perhaps, but its best to measure with your DVM
All Toyotas are equipped with bleed down resistors that drain them down to 0 volts and that starts as soon as the car is turned off. They did a great job at making these cars very safe in regards to high voltage safety.
You shouldn't breake those orange pins. You unlock them using the tip on the safety plug handle. That's a built-in safety feature by Toyota - in order to remove the pins you have to have the plug unplugged.
Thank you for doing thing on video step by step. Because I’m doing this tomorrow to charge traction battery (long story) and I was thinking it was going to be next to impossible for me a woman with basic knowledge of cars
Very clear & precise video, love it. Would you please make a video about how to check the modules & replace them and charge them if they need it. Thanks
Excellent video. Before I get a new battery pack, is there any maintenance I should check before replacing? How about a video on cylinder #1 misfire due to coil
He is excellent but one thing at the end when he test , he turn on the car , he forget turn it off before remove the orange safety plug, which could make all errors you have to reset with scan.
I want to do the least amount of dissembling. Can I leave the battery unit in the car and take the cover off the battery and replace bad battery modules?
Hi. I would like to change my EPS module on my Toyota aqua and my question is what should I do to the hybrid battery before opening the steering wheel.
I had a question about this vehicle maybe you could answer. You seem to be very good. I was trying to program an all keys lost key for for a 2013 smart prius. I couldn't wake up the ecm to do the key fob programming. I finally took the vehicle to the dealer and they did it no problem. I didn't see how they did it. All they said is it was difficult. What ever that means. Do you know how to wake up the ecm to do the programming?
Excellent video very detailed and replace my 2010 Prius battery. But still getting the check hybrid system light and triangle on my dashboard. is it just plug and play? Or something else I need to do afterwards?
remove orange service plug; just disconnect the other 12V battery terminals and insert orange service plug again...place the 12V battery terminals back again and you are good to go
David Great tip on the orange key and the two orange rivets. Took a while to find the trick with the nub on the handle of the safety device into the hole in the rivet and a twist but the orange rivets just popped right off. Many thanks. Don Jorg The Villages Florida
Great Japanese engineering. Dismantle the car to replace the battery. Could you please make another video showing how to replace the battery when it's dead and the trunk hatch is closed?
Thanks for the great video. I have 2 questions: -Is there really no need to disconnect the 12V battery? -You said removing the side panels is not really necessary, just useful to see what you're working on. Can you tell me which timeframe of the video exactly you meant with this and from which point on the essential stuff continues? Thank you!
At 12:30 someone gave me an awesome hint: use a 10mm short socket to push up underneath those clips. It squeezes the tabs perfectly so the clips come right out 😊
2 different times you talk about the bolt sizes starting about 19:00. You say the bigger bolt goes forward, yet you're sticking bigger bolt in the rear or "aft" most position. Also I would bet the orange clips that you say can be broken and not replaced are tamper seals. Nice video
Is there a way to instal vent tubes on my battery? Because why would every single battery be vented but have no final vent tube leading to the outside of the car?
Please post more 2013 Toyota Prius Hybrid/Synergy repairs and replacements and code resets. Thank you, this is a big job.😮
Watched the whole video...don't own a prius. But if i buy one im glad there are knowledgeable people who share this information good video.
Nerd. Lol. I do the same thing all the time.

I just want to thank you that introduction to the most common problem with the battery! I might have to turn that into a GIF

Did you have any issues if you didn't do it exactly?
The orange deactivator plug has a tool built in to remove the orange clips without destroying them, it is kind of like a screw. Toyota is genius
This link shows how to use orange deactivator plug as a tool to remove orange clips. priuschat.com/threads/removal-of-orange-locking-caps-on-hybrid-battery-case.201631/

F it. Destroy it.
The best instructional video I have ever watched! Thank you sir!!!
So awesome. Thank you! I am preparing to part out my 2010. I just went from intimidated to excited again.
Gabrielle Angel Lilly I’m starting my project this weekend for 2010, please if you have any tip please let me know.
How’d it go?
Excellent, excellent video. Not just dissemble - where most video stop, but assemble, as well. Save hours of hard work
The safety plug had me stumped...you're correct "the part that everyone forgets" thanks!
Thank you for an awesome how -to video! I took my battery out and cleaned all the contacts up. Now it is time for a test drive!

liked subscribed and now commenting. thank you so much man this is so straightforward and comprehensive! you are my favorite new mechanic on RUclips!
Thank you for the demonstration, my man.
Best video hands down. I completed this service on my prius and it works!!!
Glad it helped
Great tutorial! Very descriptive and precise! 👍 i would just suggest putting a light on the camera
I wish you could have worn a head lamp so we could see a little better. Great job!
Excellent: Thank you so much. You did a great job. This video help me make better decision on buying another Prius. I love the car.

Weber auto college. They have awesome videos how things works.
After watching this video give me more confidence to buy used Prius not worry if battery ever goes bad I can do it myself

Ty I just bought a Prius. So I subscribed and look forward to learning more. Ty for sharing your knowledge. 🙌🏻👊🏻
Hello, it's a excellent tutorial. 👍I am going to purchase Prius 3 Plug-In version. There are must be some additional features.
Thanks for share those knowledge of Toyota prius
Very clear & precise video, love it. Would you please make a video about how to check the modules & replace them and charge them if they need it. Thanks

Yes great video
You sir are amazing!! Thank You!!
Great Video, very helpful!
great and professional video
Such a great job of directing, it’s too bad you didn’t have a little more light.
Thank you for your great job!
What are some safety points that you must follow to avoid injury?
Does a Prius need reprogramming after replacing battery pack?
Definatly remember to remove the safety plug and have someone help you lift it.
No programming required! :)
Thumbs up for the camera man .🙏
absolutely best vid. yhanks for posting
Great video! Do you have a video of you actually switching the 28 cells out? That's what I thought would be part of this video.
ruclips.net/video/UzLl2NVTNvw/видео.html
Very good video next time I see one of these I won't send it down the road
Great video. But I didn't understand where contacts might get loose or corrosion might built up😅
Awesome video. I just pushed over 100k and I may need this in the next few months
Excellent video. Before I get a new battery pack, is there any maintenance I should check before replacing? How about a video on cylinder #1 misfire due to coil
Thank you about to purchase a 2010 and take a gamble
He is excellent but one thing at the end when he test , he turn on the car , he forget turn it off before remove the orange safety plug, which could make all errors you have to reset with scan.
Good job, Thanks friend
Nice job, how do you remember where all those bolts/screws go?
Thanks a lot! God bless
Nice video can you please tell me if I buy new battery from Toyota before installation do I need to charge or not please let me know thanks
Thank u and is we want to remove the 12v battery cable before change the hybrid battery
I want to do the least amount of dissembling. Can I leave the battery unit in the car and take the cover off the battery and replace bad battery modules?

Is this the same for the plug in version? Thinking of getting a 2013 plug in but want to know how to replace the hybrid battery incase it goes bad
Excellent video very detailed and replace my 2010 Prius battery. But still getting the check hybrid system light and triangle on my dashboard.
is it just plug and play? Or something else I need to do afterwards?
remove orange service plug; just disconnect the other 12V battery terminals and insert orange service plug again...place the 12V battery terminals back again and you are good to go
I had the hybrid battery replaced on a 2010. When I got it back, no backup camera, no radio console, including Bluetooth. Any ideas how to fix?
Great video, I have a problem with the electrical clips, being an old man, I cant grasp them to release, can you recommend a tool for us , thanks.
you make it look so easy, great job!. what is the part number on the 2012 battery?
Did you ever find part number?
G951076012
Superb! Thanks 👍🏻
Nicely done. Would this process be mostly the same for a Plug-In battery replacement?
No, it is totally different.
Have you done a vid detailing Plug-in battery replacement then?
Great vid. Did u know that orange disconnect has a key on it to remove those cover tabs you broke?
David
Great tip on the orange key and the two orange rivets. Took a while to find the trick with the nub on the handle of the safety device into the hole in the rivet and a twist but the orange rivets just popped right off. Many thanks.
Don Jorg
The Villages Florida
You’re in the villages? I’m in Leesburg. You have a shop?
He said that.
You don't have to take all those parts off to change the battery.
Where can you buy the hybrid battery for reasonable price?
I am in Florida.
Great Japanese engineering. Dismantle the car to replace the battery. Could you please make another video showing how to replace the battery when it's dead and the trunk hatch is closed?
Where is the Corolla Hybrid or Gen 4 Prius hybrid battery located? Have they made it easier to access?
Thanks for the great video. I have 2 questions:
-Is there really no need to disconnect the 12V battery?
-You said removing the side panels is not really necessary, just useful to see what you're working on. Can you tell me which timeframe of the video exactly you meant with this and from which point on the essential stuff continues? Thank you!
How many cells were bad ?
Nice my friend thank you
Thank you too

Is the Gen2 or Gen3 Prius more simpler to change out the HV battery?
They are both very easy but the 3rd gen is easier
Is there a way to instal vent tubes on my battery? Because why would every single battery be vented but have no final vent tube leading to the outside of the car?
whats the cost of replaceing one of these, if you do the work yourself??
well done!
i want to replace my battery but i heard horrible stories of people even dying or getting shocked bad trying to change a battery is that true.
Watch the entire video there is your answer
