The famous bells of Brescello (Italy) ringing in the Don Camillo films

The town of Brescello (Reggio Emilia, Italy) was chosen to shoot the famous Don Camillo and Peppone films, which have been translated into almost every language in the world. The bells were cast two years before filming began on the first movie and are the same ones that ring in all the films. The old bells were stolen during the war and remade in 1950. This town is the scene of one of cinema's greatest masterpieces, with actors of the calibre of Fernandel and Gino Cervi, who acted perfectly in the films.
Brescello was founded six hundred years before the birth of Christ and also became a diocese in 372, when the bishop of Milan had abolished the see of Parma because it was led by a heretical bishop. The ancient church was razed to the ground by the Lombards and rebuilt several times, the last time in 1837. The bell tower was raised in 1896 to its current height and enriched with a lantern and at the time housed a concert of three bells. The church is rich in works of art, among which is a sculpture of St Genesius the bishop, dating back as far as 1200. Among the many works of art, it is worth mentioning the very famous Christ of the High Altar, a talking crucifix used in all the Don Camillo films.
