I've had to learn my lesson the hard way trying to do a three day camping trip out of my rucksack. I packed a lighter sleep system, to save weight for food and water. It's definitely worth carrying a heavy sleeping bag when the temperature goes below 35 degrees Fahrenheit if you want to sleep through the night. Otherwise the cold will make it very hard to sleep. I go camping all year round even January and February when it gets below zero. Cold weather gear is definitely essential for anything below 35 in my opinion. Glad you learned a good lesson buddy! Good stuff!!!🤙🤙🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
Canadian infantry here. We’re issued 2 -15°c sleeping bags(inner and outer), a side zip bivy bag which is absolutely massive, a pos cotton liner, and a “ranger blanket” aka poncho liner. I usually end up carrying one bag the ranger blanket and a cheapo fleece liner. Got me down to -15°c inside a snugpak ionosphere. Had to sleep with merino thermals and issued fleece tops and bottoms a couple nights.
One thing about the military, they do (most of the time) provide very good equipment to work and live in. I can only talk about USAF experiences since that's where I grew up and served. My first experience with the N3B USAF Parka was in 1968, I had another one in 1977 and I currently have 2 N3B Parkas and one Bunny pants with suspenders, the green Mucluc's and an assortment of gloves. Though I have never been cold enough to wear the bunny pants I can say they are very warm to try on. The N3B is a very warm coat. When I was based in Chicago I would very often wear a T-shirt, polo shirt and my parka in 32 to 0 degree temps. Layering is part of staying warm. So is your activity level. Keeping your layers open and not compressing them will keep you in good shape. I have never seen the suit you are wearing or how it feels when you stick your arm in a sleeve. I know If I slip my arm in my N3B, it arms up pretty quick. There was a time when you could get a brand new N3B for about 100.00 dollars. Now days they are rare and can cost over 200.00 if you can find one. In the late 1990's before I bought my 3rd N3B i bought an LL Bean parka it cost me 400.00. It didn't keep me warm at all. I turned it back and by accident found a surplus store that had the N3b's for 100.00. I have since bought a N3B for a friend of mine who lives in Idaho and she loves it. So as for the similarities between the N3B and the suit you are trying I cant say. But I think the military did it right with the N3B parka and system for ground and flight crews. I don't have the under clothing you are talking about and I may have to invest in a few pair. I enjoy your channel and look forward to when you release new videos. Be good and keep moving.
Oh, man... I really didn't like that N3B. The zipper layout and cut is funky. It just didn't work for me. I like the marshmellow/GenIII7 suit much better. It does seem that even the GenIIIL7 parkas are seeing their prices skyrocket and availability plummet.
From my own experience: If you leave only L2 under L7, it will be warmer. So condensation accumulates less under clothes and you freeze less. And you need to put on spare, dry socks. But of course for each person everything is purely individual. Greetings from western Siberia, Novosibirsk 🤟
Do you think it would be better if you had used the bivy from the start? L7 top and bottom, booties, and bivy cover still seems like a pretty compact and lightweight option for freezing temps.
@@GruntProof interesting, why do you think you couldn't keep your core warm? Maybe the coat layers were compressing and didn't allow layers of warm air to insulate you?
Hunting season is over in Montana and I was camped out 20 days. I started with silky bottoms and waffle top and ended both waffle, never got cold enough to try the poly but ski season is here. I wore the level 7 top around the camp at night and my daughter used the bottoms on the 4 wheeler and loved them. Love your channel keep up the great work!
Hammock camping in the cold doesn’t work well unless you use an under quilt. You will get cold on your backside because the insulation of your clothing and sleeping back compresses under your body weight.
Hello, it's the same temperature here in London England, been out with the dog for three hours, when I get home I find a hairdryer really warms you up fast, bet you didn't think of that?! I'm not much of a tough guy.
Thanks for the video - I was considering switching to the marshmallow suit for sleeping instead of messing with sleeping bags. Trying to get ready for winter backpacking with a rucksack. Maybe I'd be ok with ninja suit, waffle tops and bottoms, fleece jacket and marshmallow suit on a sleeping pad. Just gotta find something that works
Been on the field with the dog for three hours, my hand got cold so I put acrylic hat in my trouser pocket as a liner and it worked! Don't even need the hairdryer!
Thanks! I was thinking of doing that, but I thought it would easily handle anything above 0F, especially with the two other layers. Do you think wearing the Gore Tex pants and shell over it would have made it comfortable?
hopefully you have socks to.. the permaloft stuff can keep you pretty warm but it helps if you have the cold wet layer over the top for extra heat insulation.... socks and a hat .. you can still loose a lot of heat out of the head and feet and hands... if you bring your hands in and bring your feet in and fold over the ends it can help keep it insulated otherwise you loose heat through the openings.
i've been doing this for the last few years (in uk) normally in a british thermal suit, but i have the level7 primaloft suit tucked away, also have used a Buffalo pile lined suit (my feet tend to get cold when in a hammock, but are ok ground sleeping). i need some booties ... in winter i add a lightweight summer sleeping bag or a blanket or woobie,
I use the Gen3 ECWCS level 1 silk weight base layer and level 2 grid fleece base layer for sleep gear. Zero degrees F is about as low as it gets here in east Tennessee. I use the MSS Modular Sleep System so I really don't need much if anything, but I'm wanting to see how low I can get with the right clothing and the green patrol bag with the goretex bivy. DD makes a camo version of that underquilt if you're interested.
Great Vidéo, i believe i've seen once a vid from the the outdoor gear review making the same kind of test (in a tent) but as far as i can remember, it didn't go very well... It is maybe a better choice to keep the whole body in the same air volume like in a sleeping bag. Less tactical but more comfy! Anyway, it's still good gear, better having that suit than nothing, i get in my crates three different complete set of LVL 7 (one patagonia MARS, one USGI and one from wild thing)... and i will not get rid of them as fast as my ACUs!!!
Booties are nice. I learned that during cold weather camping (where we would spend the weekend in single digits, that hand warmers in ones wool socks, or in ones "booties" really help. You get at least 6 hrs of decent heat. But in a survival situation, you might not have those hand warmers. So, if anything, use lots of leaves.
The music during tarp set up reminded me of some German techno. I made the mistake of not having an under quilt on a hammock adventure. It got pretty cold to say the least. Glad you didn’t die.
What are your thoughts on the extreme cold weather sleeping bag and your thoughts on the mss sleep system as a one vs the other. And can u use the mss Bivy in conjunction with the extreme cold weather sleeping bag.ifso is there an issue with condensation when using the two together. Earlier this year, I used just a 200g OTTE gear jacket, beanie and gloves on some 38-42 nights, along with a gortex bivvy sleeping on the ground and was comfortable above 40. The 38 night was chilly but not a problem. I’m sure the level 7 would do better.
First, Hammocks are wicked cold to begin with. At least you had the under-quilt for it or you would have been screwed. As soon as you compressed the jacket insulation the effectiveness went out the window. No loft, no insulation. The only thing I've used that works in a hammock is a thin air mattress inside the hammock and an under-quilt. Now, lets start talking about that netting you used for a shelter. If you can't keep the wind off of you and the body heat you lose trapped in some way shape or form, you are going to get what you have here.
I saw the hammock and thought your night had "fail" written all over it...until I saw the underquilt. Then it just looked chilly. A few years ago, I wore an Aerogel coat by Shivershield in a hammock overnight with no topquilt or underquilt at just above 0 F. It has kidney pockets for chem-warmers. Slept toasty that night, but the jacket weighs about 5 lbs.
I just bought these bad boys on the deal of the century and I also got the icw and ecw sleep bags together. I paid $69 for the jacket new with tags, $60 for pants like new and $129 for the pair of bags. I still need the USMC bivvy and the gortex level gear and I'm set for all weather this winter camping on my motorcycle under a tarp. I'm also gonna put a nomex flight suit on over the ecwcs levels I have on when riding the motorcycle.
I picked up some tyvek suits to use while changing a sewer line . Snow white with a hood and elastic at the hands and feet . It had some kind of lining . I probably sweated out 20 pounds that week . I am going to try it out at home to see how cold I can stand in it .
Consider the following: Astronauts can exist in outer space with their 'level one' shelter. Underwater deep sea divers can exist deep underwater with their 'level one' shelter. Fire fighters and people who go into radioactive areas can survive with their 'level one' shelters. ('Level one' shelter being what they are wearing). Shows the importance of having a 'level one' shelter. What you wear is of utmost importance to you having a 'level one' shelter. Other shelters just add to the 'level one' shelter as back-ups.

That would probably help. The Carinthias are designed as a military sleeping bag, meaning you sleep in clothes. I don't know of a sleeping bag where you can sleep in Arctic temps without clothing on.
I would like to take a second and ask if you have any experience with the Benchmade Nimravus knife? Is it grunt proof? To me looks sick AF but I want to know if it’s indestructible before I buy one. Everyone else just says it looks pretty cool and that’s about it.

Fyi my trousers are called SAS arctic wind proof (British) They are high count fine cotton, they're not heavy weight. I've had them since about 1990, they were issued in the 70's ot 60's, l don't know, I'm sure others will know all about them. You would be lucky to find a pair today. Also l am waiting for a Performance Hood ETA mid January. Still standing by.
Well, unless you're a total pog or joined the military in the last 8 to 10 years......who gets to just lay down and sleep all night?! You've got to get up for your guard shift, fire guard shift, radio watch or whatever else..... then you're up before daybreak before dawn for stand too or because you're moving out.......yeah but i guess just laying there for 8 hours straight would be pretty cold
Well, I didn’t listen to the don’t try this at home. I did it this weekend with my kids. It got down to 24 degrees with a feels like temp of 19. I survived, I think if I would have layered a little better and one the the kids ground mats didn’t have a hole (so I have him my second one) I would have been ok.
Actually I tried this on the Ouachita Trail on the north face of Winding Stair Mountain with a Hennesey Expedition A Sym Hammock with 60mph winds and a norther blowin in.....yep, thought I would die....lol. Woke at 4am and my water bottle froze in my hand. Shit fuzzy.
laughable I thought he meant only the level 7 layer.. not all layers.. guy must have sweat his but off.. if you want to keep it hot just exercise a little before bedding down for the night your body heat being throttled up a little will keep it way warmer.
Try 1 pair of Wiggys socks, with those booties. You will find it very hard to beat Wiggys products pound for pound in the cold. Where you are try a wind shirt he sells. You want be sorry.
I was so just thinking about doing what you did here. I have a multicam lvl 7 setup myself. I also have the the heacy weight polypros that I utilized with the older gortex setup to work in a blizzard. I will try mine out as soon as I can. What do you do in Germany? You still in the military or you PMC? I work for the large agency but currently going through medical issues that are essentially putting me out. Here is a video about wiggys bags I mentioned to you. I double dog dare your ass to try that in Germany! 😁😂 ruclips.net/video/YD3wA5Wrcmc/видео.html

They are high count fine cotton, they're not heavy weight. I've had them since about 1990, they were issued in the 70's ot 60's, l don't know, I'm sure others will know all about them. You would be lucky to find a pair today.
Also l am waiting for a Performance Hood ETA mid January. Still standing by.
hey what's the wildlife like out there in GER? any predators?
There have been a few wolf sightings. Otherwise nothing but pigs
@@GruntProof my ex wife is there?
I live in a tent in northern Montana.
Really?
RefrigiWear has a commercial on this video, awesome..
Wait, unauthorized dying is a nono...does that mean theres such a thing as "authorized dying?!" I must've missed that memo 😆
Wool wool wool..
I'm doing a test on wool vs synthetics in freezing temps. That has been fun so far
@@GruntProof welp at least ya won’t catch on fire:)
Outstanding
Good video
From the title: I don't think "only" means what you think it means.
No sleep system
They also issue gloves with those
Germany looks beautiful - could be the Northeast USA.
All of Texas right now 👀
And they're still trying to drive around 😂😂
Actually I tried this on the Ouachita Trail on the north face of Winding Stair Mountain with a Hennesey Expedition A Sym Hammock with 60mph winds and a norther blowin in.....yep, thought I would die....lol. Woke at 4am and my water bottle froze in my hand. Shit fuzzy.
I prefer a hotel
Probably nice knowing you

Hi What is your size ? And the size of your jacket + pant :)?

@@GruntProof word!
Are you with the 173rd ?
Proudly I am not! 😂
@@GruntProof I’m drawing a blank you must be with the triangle looking patch 😂😂. I can’t even remember what the hell the name of the unit is
1 AD. I was with them as a grunt. As reserve CA I'm under the 21st, but we're a rogue company from 457th CA BN
Shame. Try harder next time 😂
It obviously wasn’t cold enough! Uk 🇬🇧
We do this a lot in the winter. I just never tried it in a hammock
👏👏
laughable I thought he meant only the level 7 layer.. not all layers.. guy must have sweat his but off.. if you want to keep it hot just exercise a little before bedding down for the night your body heat being throttled up a little will keep it way warmer.
See Erik Normark’s channel.
Никуя он не греет .,обманка это все!
dude, what? 🤣
Try 1 pair of Wiggys socks, with those booties. You will find it very hard to beat Wiggys products pound for pound in the cold. Where you are try a wind shirt he sells. You want be sorry.
I keep hearing about them
Troop you so not have orders to die with out authorization !!! Mol

Yes. You will die. Unless you bring wine. Or maybe beer.... But it has to be a dark, GERMAN beer....
