Easy to say. I love this song, but everybody's battle is different. I worry about suicide...if I will go to hell...people say that things can't get worse. I NEVER have said that because it always can. And in my case it keeps getting worse. I pray to God every morning and night, not for me, but those around me. I must have been a total piece of shit in my past life.

To those who don't know. Shaun Morgan wrote this song for his brother Eugene to help bring him from his depression. Eugene went with them on tour, and while in Rapid City South Dakota, Eugene jumped from their 10th story hotel. Shaun was one of the first people on scene when they pronounced him dead. The music video was made in memory of Eugene, you can see Shaun with tears in his eyes in several scenes.

You can see the tears streaming down Shaun's face as he's yelling the last lines of the song. I've lost ones close to me to suicide, but I can't imagine the pain of losing your brother just a few feet away from you. I know musicians put their heart into their lyrics, but I can't believe this man was able to record this, let alone get on stage and play this at concerts. He is legitimately saving lives and I hope he can see that

Unfortunately, my best friend of 28 years couldn't rise above this. It's been a week already, and I'm basically writing this through so many god damned tears and rum. We both used to jam to Seether and many other bands. But this hits me hard, and with how fresh this is.. it fucking hurts. This song legitimately saved my life. I had been suicidal from the time I was 12. I listened to this song every day in high school and college and it got me through everything. When I saw them live for the first time our car broke down pulling into the venue parking lot. When we finally got to the venue this was what they were playing and I started sobbing, gripping my friends hand. I thought how fitting it was that the first song I heard live was the one that saved my life. Some people think it's cheesy to say a song or band saved their life but Shaun definitely saved my life with this one.

It's not cheesy, I could rattle off numerous tracks that have helped me out of the darkest spots. If anyone says it's cheesy they are a type of negative you are better off passing by. Their depth is pretty much what you see and hear from them, short of that they are empty.
People who find meaning in music and art are in touch with their soul and that's a good thing. Never lose it.

When my eldest sister passed away from alcohol and prescription drugs she took everything I had left in me. During her funeral RISE ABOVE THIS was a theme song I picked out during her services and it wasn't for anyone else at the time but for myself. I dedicate this to my sister. So many times, I fought to get her to the doctor, get someone to notice she wasn't ok. They bucked me. She wanted to turn a blind eye to it. Pretend I was over-reacting. 10 years later, she's not only alive and well, but almost done with her degree in psychology helping others who are on the ledge. I'm so fucking proud. I was absolutely tormented by her suicidal tendencies. We made it. So sad for all of those who are claimed by suicide, and for those who are left to pick up the pieces. Thank you, seether, for this song. At those moments that I didn't know how the fuck we wpuld make it, I played this and got the wind back in my sails. Your song inspires. I appreciate it. Love, Liz.

This may sound weird to some, but this song came out around the same time my mother passed away and while I was severely dependent on opiates. I desperately wanted my life back yet didn't know if I could deal without mom. Let alone while sober. This song was instrumental in my taking that first step out of that prison of pills. Seether's vocalist Shaun Morgan has stated that the song is about his late brother, Eugene Welgemoed, and was written before his suicide. "Rise Above This" was written to bring Eugene out of a depression. During filming, the band had to try performing three times due to Morgan's difficulty keeping from sobbing.

Take the night and darken everything around me
Call the clouds and listen closely, I'm lost without you
Call your name everyday, when I feel so helpless
I'm fallen down but I'll rise above this, rise above this
Hate your mind, regrets are better left unspoken
For all we know this void will grow
And everything's in vain, distressing you, don't leave me open
Feels so right that I'll end this all before it gets me
Call your name everyday, when I feel so helpless
I'm fallen down, but I'll rise above this, rise above this
Call your name everyday when I seem so helpless
I'm fallen down but I'll rise above this rise, rise above this doubt
I'll mend myself before it gets me
I'll mend myself before it gets me
I'll mend myself before it gets me

I've never publicly commented on any song/subject before in here.
But, after reading the story behind this song, I must.
This song has meant inspiration and hope for me in some dark times. I never fully understood that it was about suicide just listening to it. Terms like depression, anxiety, isolation and addiction didn't exist in my family growing up. Men were supposed to be men, you didn't talk about it, nor knew how to.
I have definitely contemplated suicide a few times. Today, I'm a recovering addict and life is pretty damn good. I discovered that my desire to live outweighed the pain I endured. Not an easy road of discovery. If saying something in here helps just one person, than what I went through, still go through at times; was/is all worth it.

He tried to reach out to me , but I was so upset how abusive he was to me and my mother growing up. I REFUSED to accept any apology. Later on my aunt called me to tell me he passed. I finally felt like I was released from him. Dealing with a bunch of other things. Having PTSD from being shot in the chest, which I never knew I struggled with for years. Until I saw a doctor. I realized that I needed to make some changes. No matter what we go thru its not our fault. It just takes good people to understand where we come from and pray for us to get better. My prayers are with you always man. God bless hope you live the best life God has in store for you. Your not alone.

Today I'm still clean and sober and actively go to trauma therapy. I still have some bad episodes, but I get through them, never desiring help from drugs or alcohol.
This is our time now, our time to live, our time to thrive. I won't be denied what I deserve.....

Shaun's emotions are shows so clearly in this song.
His brother committed suicide after this song was written.
If i'm correct,he wrote this in hope of his brother getting over his situation.
But sadly, later on he lost him.
Shaun had to do 3 retakes while making the video because he kept crying where the emotion got him.

im one of the likes, but years later i find myself coming to this video pretty much as a parachute...trying to feel what every waking thought i have would do to my loved ones. year after year, months...days, maybe this hour. someone that would anchor me out of this seems to be more numb to me then they were the day before.i used to think this song gave me strength. now...i dunno, i just kind of think it guilted me into years of sadness.

His brother actually committed suicide and the lead singer,Shaun originally wrote this song as a form of theraphy (I don't know if that's a right word) for his brother but he committed suicide before he can show him. While making this video, the band had to shoot three times because Shaun can't keep himself from crying

I remember listening to this song when I was twenty years old but to me it was just a song. My brother committed suicide almost a year ago now. No matter how many times we told him things would get better. He didn´t rise above it. There was no rewind button on it. And now i can´t listen to this song without crying.

I listen to this song so much. It helps with the pain. It helps with the struggle I go through each and everyday. The depression and anxiety disorder I have and feel is a terrible existence, a real life living hell. When I feel like I want to let go, there's always something that stops me, something that make me stay another day. Although I fell like I'm losing my grip slowly and surely, somehow I keep holding on. This song means so much to me. It really makes me hang on just a little longer.

That's a lie. Things get worse, then they carry on to get even worse.. and worse. What people need to do is try to figure out if their life means anything to anyone other than themselves. If there are people that care about you, you should try your absolute hardest to stay strong for them. And if you have nobody to care, try to reach out before you give in. But if you truly have literally nobody to leave behind, then go in peace. We are all destined to die after all.

They will never know how much I needed this

This is the most passionate and meaningful song I've practically ever heard. He wrote this about his brother committing suicide when they were younger. I'm depressed. It's hard for me to feel emotions. I just can't... but watching him cry at the beginning while looking at the camera and seeing how much he loved his brother makes me feel. Sorrow, but at least it's something. Amazing song!
