Sea shanties were sung by sailors during the long voyages of the 18-19th centuries, to pass the time and to help with some of the heavy work (lifting sails, hauling whales, etc). They were designed to be both rhythmic and repetitive, so the whole crew could easily join in.
A Scottish guy recently went viral on Tiktoc singing Wellerman (the first song in this medley) and this video’s visual format pays tribute to that.
And got a record contract out of it. He’s got some pretty decent originals on his channel.
He’s gone to number 1!
same concept and origin of marching songs and later Cadences to help keep ranks of soldiers in step and motivated also regulates breathing for jogging and running
Saw Home Free in Portland, Oregon this past week. This melody was part of their encore. If you get a chance to see them live, DO IT! They are fantastic.
What gets me about this song/medley, is the change in Austin's voice. We're used to that beautiful high tenor, and the Santiana song he has a completely different quality to his voice. I think it's the only time I've heard that quality in his voice. This song, and Tim's bass is what first attracted me to Home Free. Their talent kept me here.
I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy this either, but once I heard it, I WAS SOLD. I even put it on a loop on Saturday, and then cleaned the bathrooms & the kitchen...and in record time too !!
Ha ha! these songs were all composed roughly 200 years ago, to make work go more easily and faster. Good to know that they still work well for their intended purpose.
(I've been a fan of sea shanties as a genre of music since I was a little kid, 45 years ago, which was the last time they were trending in our culture).
Me too
Seriously, when will everyone learn 'never' to question HF!! 😄 Of course it will be good no matter what they choose to cover? Right?! 😉
Lol. I know right. It takes me a minute to listen to their new songs mainly because I don't know if I'll like them. Once I listened to their Sea Shanty Medly, I loved it. It's so freaking awesome
Sea Shantys usually have been sung basically with no or minimal instruments so doing this acapella was perfect and sounded so good. Yes, that bass...loved it!
*shanties
Adam Rupp was absolutely KILLING the drums in this one!
Tim was dressed like Captain jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Austin was ACTING like Captain Jack Sparrow, with the way he was moving he hands. Great fun, as was your reaction.
Sea shanties are apparently A Thing on Tiktok right now, which explains the video layout here.
I grew up listening to my dad’s old folk albums (Kingston Trio, The Weavers, etc.), and both Drunken Sailor and Santiana were on those, so I was delighted to hear HF sing them! Also, if you’re ever in an Irish pub when there’s singing happening, you have a 50/50 chance to hear Drunken Sailor and be forced to sing along.
I grew up listening to the Weavers--I have two of their classic CDs, and I play them when I go on long drives--it keeps me alert :)
Drunken Sailor has always been everywhere but Santana is new to me and I loved it. Adam Rupp’s “castanets” and wave splashes in this song are really extra! All the guys were great. Tim was the most serious jolly salt ever and was funny standing so carefully still in his little landlocked boat. We all needed this, it’s irresistible!
These guys are so funny. This is something that Chance wanted to do. He is fond of this kind of music. Did you hear Adam's castanets in the last song. Your reaction was great.
The castanets were amazing! I have always love sea shanties.
"Leave her Johnny Leave her" and "Drunken Sailor" are more Irish/Scottish sea shanties so this was a great medley by them
South Australia too.
Ah, shut yer gob and get back to work, boyo!
Tim may look like Jack Sparrow, but Austin acts like him!
I’ve noticed Tim’s upper body moves, and his lower half is pretty much solid stiff - I personally didn’t notice it, but I’d read somebody’s comment that he’s standing up in a rowboat. He’s probably trying not to rock it! Lol
@@marief8584 the rockboat would fall if he moved- and the camera too 😂 cuz he tried moving, and since his camera was strapped a tree, when he moved the rockboat, it’d hit the tree and the camera would just- go south completely and move when he didn’t want it to 😂
So I'm right the guy in the red shirt is called Austin
@@joannefalkinder393 yep
Tim: Why's the rum gone?
Austin: uhh...
You're right Dennis : everthing they do is gold ! The Adam's beatboxing is insane ! Did you hear the castanets ? These guys are so good !! 👏
Those castanets CLAP!!!! I picked them up the first 20 times I heard this.
I'm a long-time fan of shanties, and I love seeing you discovering this fun style of music. Shanties are always a good time, and let you both enjoy the music and sing along with the chorus. And, of course, Home Free is absolutely fantastic with them!
They could make an album of Sea Shanty's and I buy it!!
They could make 4
My sailor buddies and I would sing these same shanties while in the US Navy. It is so great to see them do this mash up! Now we want to learn this new version for this year's reunion camp. Old salty dogs here. The kids are enjoying the mash up, too. So glad to see you liked it, too.
What is crazy good about this is Adam is doing castanets towards the end. Never heard that before. Apparently, these sea shantys are all over TikTok. That's why the "hf" logo at bottom left is a takeoff of the TikTok logo. Don't pass on Austin rocking eyeliner!
If im right this video is also ON TikTok
Agreed, the castanets sound was insanely good.
@Kylen Cannon interesting and all. But why here?
@@Meanslicer43 report it
Great reaction! Their medley is a personal favorite now.
The 5 songs in order:
- Wellerman
- Drunken Sailor
- Leave Her Johnny
- Cape Cod Girls
- Santiana
I recognized one of the sea shanty songs.... about the drunken sailor. You are so right.... everything they do is gold!
You looked like you had alot of fun with this reaction, good job Dennis...👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you 🤗
As someone else said. A lot of sea shanties on Tiktok. The guys have a page there, and this is there so others can duet it. I think they have some of the duets on their Instagram.
Sea shanties are perfect for a capella! I loved this so much. My college friends and I have spent many late hours singing sea shanties when hanging out. Have we gotten strange looks from people passing by? Absolutely. Do we care? Absolutely NOT lol 😂
When young My Irish Gramps and his fishermen friends along the Atlantic seacoast used to sing thesebsea shanty and old Irish Dittys in the salloons and pubs..
Of cpurse being in 1940s-50s a lot had been at sea and their dads even before into sailing ships for whalers and cod.
not all songs were happy happy but yet all sang tp fast paced. Been many a year since I was a wee lad under gramps wing and ventured forth to meet older men of plder times and yet even today I can be driving or walking and one of those dittys will arise.
Lots of WWI and II vets still sang in taverns and even on docks or lumber camps.
Rough work hardened men who it may surprise todays maco boys sand dittys and even short unwritten ballards of hard times dead friends family and sons lost at sea and wars.
I was priveledged to hear them, and having a such respected Gramps no one dared say that kid cannot be here.
Long gone times of real men and women.
And oh ya, those old mill towns had communal houding and washing was done outside by women and daughters.
Some of those shanty and ditty songs sung by them eere far more raunchy than hubbys by a long shot.
Not easy loves and as a 8 year old I packed 50# bags of coal to dump in housing coal chutes. Cut ice for ice box delivrry and could manage a good plow horse or mule.
If one worked like a man he was treated with respect as a young man.
Course Gramps hands could fell an 8 year ox and everyone knew it.
Respect was earned and not taken for granted.
Even moneyed swells knew you best be ready to back up your bs or crawfish into mommys and daddys pocketbooks for rest of lives.
The Iris had saddest most mundane and maudlin songs of all but most of them were flatlander mill workers who led some of most fn dull lives of any immigrants.
To date, this is by far my favorite Home Free video. I can't stop listening to it.
I can now add castanets to the extensive list of instruments that I've heard Adam "play." Such an insanely fun video!!
Sea Shanties were sung by sailors as they worked, especially hauling on the lines. The rhythms helped to keep them all working together.
The guys all killed it on this one. I loved it so much!
I believe I read somewhere(maybe their fb page 😀) that chance used to bring his sea shanty music to play on the bus while touring ....and they all got into the music....when chance brought up the idea of this the were all up for it xx
So much fun. Home Free never disappoints with anything they sing. I didn't see Tim in the boat until I saw someone's post, then there it was. I love the Sea Shanty music also...but it has been a long time since I have heard any. It made my day. Thanks for a great reaction.
😂😂😂 dude the way you were dancing with the water bottle made my day.
Totally love the mimicking of the original. So fun!
This was created out of boredom during the lockdown. They said they were desperate to put out a video, but couldn't be together. They never thought this would be so popular. Check out Adam's castanets. Also, Tim is dressed like Jack Sparrow....but Austin has Jack's weird movements. 😏
This was so good and so much fun! An earworm really... haha
Great reaction!
I think these have been popular on Tik Tok and Chance brought this to the boys. It’s so good. I only knew one song, hadn’t heard the others and I love it. Austin and Tim were rocking the pirate looks. Adam was killing it with the castanets sounds in the last song. Loved it. Good reaction matey!!! Argh!!
When I got my Patreon notification last week and saw they did a sea chatty medley, I have to admit that it was the first time I wasn’t excited. I thought about watching it at a little later that day (I was kind of busy), but knew in my heart that whatever they do, it will be amazing! So I watched it and very pleasantly surprised at how much fun it was to watch! I smiled the whole way through. I knew exactly what you meant about not really being into that type of genre. Although I do love Captain Jack Sparrow! Tim definitely went all out on his Cap’n Jack costume, but Austin acted more like him! Those facial and hand gestures were on point! Anyway, I saw it didn’t take but a line or two before you started smiling, Dennis! Great reaction! Tim m’s bass was ridiculous, as was Adam’s beatboxing!! Chance and Rob’s lead vocals were stellar, too!
I didn’t know any of the songs, either, they made it so fun! I LOVED it, though! I am sure they had fun doing it, even though it was during quarantine. Great reaction, Dennis🎉 I love Home Free😊
The first song in this medley, Wellerman, went viral on TikTok and Twitter recently, which is what prompted them to do this medley (along with the fact that Chance loved these songs before it was cool).
Tim's rumbling low note at the very end. So low its not even a sound just a rumble you can feel.
That was definitely fun! TFS
Yes, just Fun...loved what they did💖🙃‼️. There’s Nothing they can’t do ‼️
Sea shanties are rollicking good fun.
Head on over to check out Home Free’s “When a man loves a woman” with Austin on lead vocal, will blow your headphones off❣️
Sea Shanties are popular on tiktok lately, but they've been around forever. Manly, a cupella songs from old, love them. Now one does it better than our home Free boys twist!
I LOVE sea shanties! They are so much fun. I got to see Home Free in concert last month, and the audience was pretty tame (hey, we're Canadian lol), but when they sang this, everyone got up and clapped. It was awesome xo
Not my thing either....generally....but this was awesome--maybe because it's Home Free and they're always awesome. Go back and listen to Adam's castanets in the last song in the medley....it's ridiculously good. Great reaction. Blessings!!
Castanets... Adam swallowed those along with the drum kit... OMG
Adam's beat box castanets in Santianna . . .enough said. What a hoot!
Perfect and sounded so great there guys are magnific ...newfriend here
I swear, someone better sing these at the next Rennaisance Faire coming up this year, 2022! I mean the best one for it is the Texas Ren Faire down in Todd Mission, Texas, 55 miles northwest of Houston. They even have two restaurants there that are pirate-themed: The Sea Devil Tavern and the Captain's Galley. What could be better than hearing sea shanties by the best pirates in the land while munching on your turkey leg?
This is great. You have given me a great laugh. LOL.
This all started in the U.K. on tik tok .A postman sang that song ( the first one ) and it went to number 1! Home free reference him in a lovely way if you know what to look for
We sang the song about the drunken sailor in music class in elementary school. The subject matter seems odd for 5th graders, but we did sing it. It was in the textbook. That was in the 60s.
THIS is 1000% pure testosterone fueled from start to finish..LOVE IT..we need MORE of this from HF.
Adam dping the casstenets is pretyy awesome too.
Boy they dug deep into the Shanty Bin to get those, lol. Great vid.
Even if you don't know the songs and can't sing along, you can still enjoy the singing, especially that bass. While you were busy One Voice Children's Choir released a cover of "Hallelujah" with a single guitar and their voices.
You might want to check out Soon May the Wellerman Come by The Fox and the Hound featuring Adam Chance.
Dennis, I (had) 15 reactor subs. They're all gone now! Your choices and reactions are my favorite!! The fact that you like Home Free is definitely a plus!
I wish Tim had played jack sparrow in pirates of the Caribbean. Can you imagine jack in the movie where every time he spoke you heard Tim’s massive deep voice!!!!! Lol don’t get me wrong though I love Johnny depp!!
Tim hits a C1. In a way this is one of the best things they have ever done
Tim couldn't move around much because he was standing in a fishing boat in his yard and didn't want it to tip over with him standing in it!
I Live 10 mins away from the Man who wrote the First song Alan Doyle from the Great Big Sea !!!!!
Sea shanties are songs that sailors on sailing ships sang to time the work and work together. Hand work in fields usied the same type songs to pace their work.
Nathan Evans, a postman, started it all on tic-toc.
Check out the movie Fisherman’s Friend. I believe this started the craze for sea shanty.
Tim's ending note vibrated my headphones. o_O
I have listened to many reactions to this song, you were the first to recognize Tim basing it up the whole way.
Love this
Wellerman is a New Zealand whaling sea shanty from 1900's
I had no idea what a sea shanty was and I wasn't sure if I would like it either when it was released to Patreon....but I absolutely love it! Everyone played/sang their part so well! Austin really brought out his musical theatre for this video! Now we know....that there is nothing these guys can't sing! Thanks for the reaction!
You have a great sound system! Crisp and clear! 👍
Colm McGuinness Music does a solo version of most of these songs. He is really good. Some of them are from Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag.
Hubby was Navy and he knows most of these songs.
Welcome to sea shanties Mr. King. I bet it makes you want to hear more!
Head phones full of ear candy! I love this medley. I've listened to it a lot of times. The only one I had heard of is Drunkin' Sailor.
Most of these shanties are from the U.K. invented in the 18 - 19th centuries (privateers, pirates and the Royal Navy)
leave her johnnie leave her, third song, is singing by AC Black Flag, the others are pretty old and classics by sailors
They did a lot of great ones, one of my all time favorite sea shanties is a Scottish one called, 'Leis an Lurighan' which basically means 'with/alongside Lurighan', Lurighan being the name of the captain. The song is about a brave captain coordinating his crew during a nasty storm, telling his crew that if they're scared they can go below, he and the rest with pull them through. There are versions in full on Scottish Gaelic and many versions where just the title phrase is in Scottish Gaelic, I love both. (though I can't understand the former) (my favorite version that I've heard is by a group called 'Scatter The Mud')
Thanks Dennis. I didn't know about sea shanties either but this has been super fun!! Watched it many times no with reactors, etc. They are so clever. Love how it kept picking up speed so much during it! Take care.
I LOVE Adam’s castanets!
Check out the group The Longest Johns for more sea shanty fun.....they are fantastic. They do a great version of the majority of the sea shanties in this video. I am sure they were the inspiration for Home Free in this.
First and foremost I hope you are doing well. Love to see the smile back on your face. Wasn’t sure I was going to like this either. What the heck was I thinking?!? It is Home Free!! Loved it!! After hearing it for the first time, I found my self playing a couple times a day. Awesome reaction!!
If you think Tim was really making that bass line "Bad A$%, You should look up the video where Tim doubles up with vocalist Peter Hollins. They sing the theme song, On Misty Mountain, which was the TOP featured song of the Hobbit movies. Both, Peter Jackson''s Hobbit film, and the Rankin/Bass animated, made for tv film. Tho Spoiler warning...As Deep and low as Tim's bass reaches in this song, be ready to get goosebumps, with their OWN GOOSEBUMPS!!!
FANTASTIC!!! Always great with Home Free!!! I did get a kick out of the "pirates"...one in flannel, one in a t-shirt, one looked more like a gypsy or sheik, and then Tim and Adam Full really committed, lol!!! 😂 That's just another thing that makes Home Free GREAT!!! Thank you!❤️
So fun!
They did this basically in response to the absolute craze that has been going on on Tiktok over the last several months, where sea shanties have been all over the place. This was shot in Tiktok style - there are lots of discussions about why sea shanties are so addictive (especially for male voices) on RUclips, so if you really want to understand it a bit better (I strongly suggest that you might want to get a better idea, as it has NOTHING to do with "pirates"...) They are easy to learn, a blast to sing along with, and hugely gratifying as well. Of course, NONE of those other videos are Home Free, so they are nowhere near as good - but I'm a little biased, maybe.
Check out the bottom it´s not TIK TOK but HF
*Dat bass tho-*
Pls listen to Home Free doing Sawyer Brown, “Some Girls Do”. Chance sings!!! 🇨🇦
Well done, Dennis. Lots of fun to be had in the deepest darkest seas! :-)
Home free was made for sea shantys
I'm not a Tik Tok person but apparently sea shanties are a thing there this year
8:30 actually didn't notice this before, most likely a growl
Love these guys
Look at stan rodgers, port issac fisherman's friends for similar songs
I really want you to react to VoicePlay's cover of Bang to see what you think of their guest singer.
As for no one doing this kind of thing... I'll give it to you when it comes to medleys of these. I haven't encountered a lot of that, but sea shanties are a big thing right now. 2021 has been called The Year of Sea Shanties. I think that the whole vibe of songs to keep morale up during a long, hard slog of a journey is very on point for the mood of the day. Look into The Longest Johns. Their mass choir cover of Leave Her Johnny is amazing. But a lot of their other work is really lovely, too.
Hey there. I did "Bang" a couple of weeks ago. It should be on our VoicePlay playlist 😁
@@KingFamilyReacts The awful thing is that it actually shows that I watched that one. Shows how nuts things have been lately for me XD
@@Drake844221 🤣🤣🤣
angelina said hello and hopes to see you soon on her new song reaction lol
The last type of song you would expect to hear from a country group.
I told you you'sd like it....lol. Through the screen of course, how can you not like this medley.
adams castanets are amazing
