  • Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
One of the earliest buildings in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico is the Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, located on the east end of Colon Plaza, across from the Mayagüez City Hall and the Colon fountain. The town was built around those 2 important buildings of church and government.
The original construction began in 1760 and finished in 1780, then the Cathedral was damaged in the 1918 San Fermín earthquake registering as a 7.1 magnitude just off the northwest coast of the island, which resulted in a divinely planned remodel a few years later.
The latest restoration to preserve and maintain the deteriorating roof, was completed in 2004, while preserving many of the Gothic elements. The later remodels introduced the more modern stain glass windows throughout the cathedral.
The public is welcome to visit and tour the interior of the Cathedral during non church service hours. Be sure to stop by when visiting Colon plaza in Mayagüez.

My best friend got married there and I was her bridesmaid - back in 1977!! Rex ice cream was around the corner, the best coconut ice cream I’ve ever had! Those were the good old days for me ❤

Hey Jen, thanks for sharing. How do you see the health system in the island? And, is there a PR News channel in English? I’m still debating if I move back to PR, but the health system situation is scary.
