2 years military with no rewards. The salary is not even close to the minimum wage. Living as male in Korea is really tough. Give soldiers at least minimum wage.
You get nothing when you are draft to war
3 bucks an hour in the US army as a E2..
Of course there are more benefits but put that into perspective
And some people dont respect to thoes korean man who servicing in military for the country
@@user-ge9gx7zh2p nahh thats bs it could be just a average disrespecting, and how do they know that he served in miltarym
It not that tough to North Korea lol
I love this channel, very interesting questions and a lot of insightful answers, it really inspired me to do street interview videos too!
Jimmy Zhang ur channel is also very enjoyable to me

I wish people in my country could give such educated answers when interviewed for TV.

Does every single Korean guy look like they just walked out of the hair salon? Seriously..... this is not good for my self-esteem.
Korean men love to take care of their hair.
korea people like to care about beauty. hair, fashion, skin care, body shape, diet ...etc
they obviously tend to choose the more presentable better looking people to interview
it's the influence of celebrities
Hyun Seung Kim Not just celebrities. You guys just have nice and thick hair in general.
I agree with the guy who said you’d be cut off from society. You may loose friends, relationships, your career and be separated from your family. You’d feel really depressed and lonely.
This was a very good video. The interviewer had insightful questions that were able to illicit great responses. As a foreigner, who only recently began to learn about S. Korea, it's interesting to know how some of men feel about voluntary military service. Thanks for that and in the future more about social issues would be appreciated. (Would this topic be considered a social issue?) These kind of things.
kayjmac42 o
It has been for years since this topic became social issue
The last comment was very interesting. It seems mandatory military service can make a society more structured and less rebellious. Or in other words more authoritarian and less opinionated?
True. There's also a lot of propaganda education that goes on within the military (nationalistic, anti-socialist, pro-capitalist, pro-establishment propaganda.) I think that's what makes Korean men more conservative than women.
Your said it right!
That seems to be the rationale for conscription in Singapore, who has no large, militaristic neighbors like Sweden or South Korea, and no constant threat of insurgencies like Israel.
TheKalihiMan we did experience Konfrontasi
Implying Koreans aren't opinionated, hahaha...
lol Korea isn't a small country. I live in a country of 5 milion people and that's what I call small.
Sniffles I live in a country of 1,3 million people and I think it's quite big oh well😂
Sniffles Swaziland has less than a Million
Just cause there's a country that's smaller than Korea doesn't mean that Korea isn't small...
Staci-Ann Lawson There's 50 million people is south Korea That isn't a small number.
china-1.3bil
japan-130mil
russia-140mil
south korea-50mil
it's smaller than other countries.
Do you have mandatory military service in your country? Do you think it's necessary? Share your opinions.
No, not anymore. Germany got rid of it in 2011 I believe. The mandatory service was 9 months only, which I think is a more reasonable length compared to the two years in South Korea. My older brother had to do it, but he actually liked it and extended his service to two years. He got paid quite a lot but didn't have to do much for it. In the end he was bored on a daily basis and eventually started studying in an university.
Asian Boss nah bruh..... I think it's pretty fucked up that u HAVE to go through military service in Korea.... I mean, I get that military is a good place for men to become stronger not only physically but also mentally but it is definitely not for everybody. Some people might be starting their own businesses, other people might wanna go over seas to work or study, u must spend 2 years in the military just seems really ridiculous to me. Dont get me wrong, I'd fucking do it if I have to, I mean I play sports and I'm a active guy and everything, and go through military training definitely gonna help me with my physical and mental strength, but like I said, I don't think it should be mandatory. People should have the right to choose what they want to do. I'm Chinese who live in Japan BTW. And I have friends back in China that are real soldiers as well. And I do respect them for what they do. Again not for everybody. :) let me know if u agree.
I didn't have to, but it is apparently going to be mandatory again. If my mental health was good back then, I would've applied though. I don't think it should be mandatory if possible though.
(Currently doing military service in Korea) What people get from their service: Some new relationships, Learning battle skills / What they lose: EVERYTHING ELSE.
nope ! depends on countries population
two years in the army and that's a big loss for talented scientists who can contribute a lot to their field when they don't take wasting two year break at the time they can bloom.
two years is just enough time to make any brain hard headed.
People with masters degree or phds can serve in industry r&d, so whats the issue?
winner winner even after two years of training they will still be bad in case of war. They're still civilians. You can't expect them to do well in case of war. Historically the compulsory military service was used to basically create a human shield for more trained soldiers.
To be fair, while I don’t exactly agree with mandatory military or civil service, I think it’s necessary in South Korea’s case. If God forbid North Korea decided to march down southwards, what’s the military suppose to d, throw rifles at civilians and say “best of luck lol” while they wait for a US response?
Anderson Xiong How is that different from what they are doing now? Maybe if they had a professional standing army they'd have a better chance.
A professional properly paid army is always going to be more effective than underpaid reluctant volunteer, I have also heard there is a lot of corruption and bullying that has led to murders and suicides in the Korean military so no a very bad idea. The whole thing needs an overhaul and to be changed to a more attractive career path. In Australia the people who go into military service do so because they want to, they are paid well, helped with housing and relocation packages. There is also the opportunity to study and be paid so it is often seen as a very positive pathway.
YES!!
Sweden tried having a professional army for 10 years almost. Didn't really work. Barely anyone enlisted. So they reinstated the draft.
That would be a terrible idea sadly. They need to draft these young men because of North Korea. But seriously though, the South Korean government needs to pay the soldiers better
@@NONO-oy1cu as they said the population is small. I won’t speak much in this tho only Korean men can really
Yes this is not a profession. Just take everyone for it? It's not making an army why mandatory? All delusional leaders see people as numbers. Real sufficient and effective army does not made from people that does not want to be in it.
Mandatory military completely ruined careers of many professional esport players.
But its selfish if you dont go, a pro osu player by the name of Cookiezi, or shigetora on openrec (formerly twitch) left SK for Japan because he didnt want to go, and his family had to pay a hefty fine for it.
SlayerS_`BoxeR` made it work... tho the South Korean Air Force literally had it's own Broodwar team.
They sucked though, which is understandable
And singers haha
(First world problems)
Exempting women from it 100% is really sexist against both men and women. The burden is placed solely on the men while the women are glossed-over as being too weak. I think that message may possibly be affecting how S.Korean women may carry themselves overall, perhaps?
I'm sure that the quality of their military would go up quite a lot if it were populated by people who want to be there rather than a bunch of kids just trying to get it over with, like one of the young men hypothesized.
lol if that were to happen i have a feeling flocks of women will marry foreigners asap just to not serve xD
But Korean feminists still mock these guys and they never think it's sexist
Bruh I don't know how you will take it but I won't trust my back to a female comrade in war ;_; I am not sexist or something but women are not physically and mentally equipped for war. It's just how nature works.
Bro are you kidding? Women have
childbearing organs...such tough physical training can be fatal.
@@jooheon4301 most of the soldiers in the army are not combat soldiers, but logistic, medical, intelligence etc.
in Israel the mandatory service is for men and women (allthough women serve 8 months less than men). the vast majority of the women aren't combat soldiers.
and yes, a woman who want to be in a combat unit need to sign a form that if she will have future pregnancy problems as a result of of the combat millitary service she won't be able to sue the army.
As a Korean male myself who has completed my military service, I totally think it is unnecessary or at least believe that the system should be changed. What I learned from my service is a better understanding of why the Korean society is the way it is and how our infrastructures were built. However, this was designed decades ago and requires to be more appropriate to the "real world". Instead there should be more privileges and pride for people who do work for the safety of the country. If needed to be mandatory, maybe create shorter frequent terms of basic training so people are prepared for what to do if there ever happens to be an emergency.
so what are you going to do if North Korea will attack ?
Not about the topic but who would dump her boyfriend who's in the military that's so cruel he couldn't even contact her and lol who would dump him he's so cute😂

My uncle died in 1952, in Korean when he was 21, so that South Korea could have all it has and not live like North Korea. NEVER underestimate your enemy. NEVER
Truly thank for his sacrifice. students in my country occasionally go to the UN Cemetery and pay silent tribute to US military. we appreciate and honor their sacrifice
I was wondering if being cut off from society happens all thru the 2 years? I mean if that is what happens no wonder they hate it. Not even in America is like this. Americans don't have mandatory enlistment but those who do enlist they still get to call at least once a month while in training. After training they go to work like normal except it's on a military base and live there. The moral would be so low and depressing if they are isolated for 2 years. No phone calls? No vacation time?
I believe they do have days off/days where family can visit. Also they are allowed to receive letters. But that's about all I've heard
cezy20 my bf currently serves South Korean army and he is able to call me at least 3 times a week lol. So they aren't really isolated plus they get to use computers in the weekend and watch tv
thanks for the responses :)
cezy20 not sure if my reply is too late but from what i know it also depends on which department they work for and which base they are assigned to~ some allow more and some less. But generally nowadays they can use the internet at least on the weekend ( if not more) and they can also call, write letters etc. but usually hand phones are completely forbidden. I heard though that in certain departments/ fields they can actually use it but it really depends on the case! They get vacations too :)
I served in the military. U get to watch TV in free time and call 3 times a week as well as days off once in a while, and our friends visit from time to time
I'm a guy and I would never go to military. It would be the most traumatic thing in my life. Good that my country doesn't have mandatory military service anymore. Fortunately I wouldn't be able to go anyway because I'd get rank E
That’s great my friend :)

01:06 what the heck! i would totally wait 2 years for that guy if it was me.

You can't judge by only appearance 😉
well if he's level can atleast glance at you
For most girls, it’s not simply about patience
But when you don’t see your boyfriend for so long you almost feel like you don’t know him anymore and such
You say that now but just wait until you're in it. And by the way, you can't contact him whenever you want. Communication is severely limited.
What the guy at 4:41 is talking about is the self induced helplessness that alot of Asians, especially men who have mandatory service develop. We lose the sense of initiative and ambitious spirit, making ourselves think that we are constricted by rules and can only follow higher authorities.
the person who said that women not having manditory military service could be a form of discrimination got it right. thank you
It was the dumbest thing said in the entire video.. How are women the victims when men are forced to do something they don't want to do?
@@tinomorgenstern3430 someone is triggered
@@tinomorgenstern3430 oh word that's not what i meant tho, my agreement wasn't meant to be like "and this is why women are the victims." I personally just meant that government mandated service for the country on the basis of gender is discrimination (against all parties, not on the basis of victimhood or something) because it unfairly subjects a certain group to follow pretty serious guidelines that aren't prescribed to another group. Weird asf to see something i wrote 4 years ago tho lmao
@@tinomorgenstern3430 The mandate isn't victimising women, but it's still a double standard.
Not allowing women to enlist is absolutely discrimination and unfair on both genders.
@@kirin1230 they do allow women to enlist.
It was unfortunate for my students, who were university English majors. They would leave haflway through their university career, and when they came back their English skills had totally regresssed.
guy from 2:10 speaks the truth with well educated perspective. 1 proud professional soldier > 10 barely 20 yrs old student who wants to go home.
2 years spent on something that won't take you anywhere in life financially or career wise, right at a time where their peers (women, friends abroad) are working towards their life goals. It puts the Korean men behind their peers. People talk about "starting points", this just deliberately puts a dent in it. Korean men are putting their life on hold to serve.
I have a feeling if there's no N. Korea, there may not be a conscription.
No dunno Einstein
The thing that I learned in Military is freedom is so sweet thing. You can't imagine how it is sweet and who watchs this video don't know that they'r already having freedom.
I joined Korean Military and I was discharged because of my lung problem I haven't done my military service I am still doing it as a social service. Anyway, don't want to go Amry ever again...
the Korean peninsula is still at war. only if the war stopped then the mandatory service will do the same
When north korea is your neighbor it makes sense to have mandatory military service even if it is unpleasant. That poor guy who got dumped whilst he did his!
The older gentleman had the right idea. There is a massive difference between people making their career the military and the people who just go to get it over with. Don't know why they go hard on them. I'd like to see a video like this with Israeli people who also have mandatory military service.
bfchang exactly, much better to have someone who wants to fight than someone whose forced to fight.

so many young koreans are treated almost like a 'slave' in korean military. advertising that military service is the way to be a patriot, the nation only wants them to protect from north korea with less cost. what is worse, most of koreans say that men who struggled military can become real men and that's just one of social experieces you will have although terrible incidents happened in the military. more and more well being for military services is really needed.
Jason Shin Can you give examples of said terrible incidents? I'm really curious!

As a woman, I think its a unfair that only men have to enlist. Women live in the same country, why should only men have to sacrifice their lives?
It's unfair indeed. But why do womens have to waste their lives too? The mandatory system is wrong. Its not womens or mens fault
@@belkzalpagu2738 yeah, i think making it mandatory is fundementally wrong. Like, they didn't ask to be born in south Korea, and the problem that SK has with NK has absolutely nothing to do with them nor the future generation, yet they're being used as a tool to be sacrifice in the name of nation.
@@belkzalpagu2738 so it's ok that men's lives are wasted but wrong that women have to waste theirs too?
@@belkzalpagu2738 it should never be mandatory, agreed
Conscription should be for 9 months or a year maximum. Soldiers will receive the training and knowledge to defend the nation without losing that critical extra year of their youth. While conscripted, soldiers must be offered at least 8 hours a week of either trade school classes (mechanic, medic, IT, carpentry, construction) that give them real life job options.
Soldiers should also have the option of taking 1 medical track class and one engineering track class per semester so that they aren’t a year behind when they graduate if they want to go to university. Knocking out sequential/blocking courses tremendously softens the blow of missing a year of school. It won’t hurt much to miss out on your history gen-ed which you can take any time. But it WILL hurt A LOT to miss Calc 1, because it will delay your graduation by 6 months because so many classes have Calc 3 as prerequisite.
In Sweden we used to have conscription (well, we actually just reintroduced it). Instead of having people serve for two years, we required them to do training, and then afterwards they would go on repeat training throughout the years. So, on average people had to spend less time in the military. 3 - 15 months, with pretty much all of it being training. Usually 9 months for the average infantry, 11 months for elite infantry, between about 12 - 15 months for special forces, but it has shifted a few months here and there through the years. The results were actually very good and most people who went through it thought positively of it. In the case of World War III Sweden was a very highly likely strategic target for the Soviet Union, and people understood that. South Korea has to be one of the countries with the most obvious need for a strong military, because of North Korea. I am surprised that not more South Koreans realise the danger.
You wrote WW3 lol, but that sounds like a much better system.

we have this in turkey as well and it really saddens me because innocent people actually die here because of the kurdish attacks and our government does so little to prevent this. its like if u serve near the kurdish people: u might get killed or you serve in more developed cities: you survive
Your government drafts you specially to rise hate of kurdians. Your government uses you to cover themselves much like terrorists hold people to cover themselves from police snipers.
Yep, feel sorry for you guys.
I just don't get that the turkish goverment doesn't get that if you trreat people like shit, you get shit back.
I'm not condoning the violance by the kurds by the way, but i can understand it.
And erdogan only seems to make it worse and you're right there in the middle of it.
NIELS MICHIELS i dont know how you can understand the things they do though. All i know is that they want a piece of our land to from their own country. And by our land i dont mean just the turkish people its also theirs. If they could just chill we could live in peace. People here dont hate the kurdish people at all we just hate the terrorists. Will they be happy anyway if they manage to form a country with innocent people's blood or in their hands...? Anyway i talked too much but i hope a kurdish person could see this and think about it.
Jungkook The Fencing Man
Well the problem with the situation is:
*reason 1:*
Some believe they were first there.
So why should they assimilate to the turks?
*reason 2:*
They think that the turks want to erase everything them makes them kurds.
identity:
the goverment seems to view everyone as "a turk" in turkey, if they like it or not.
Others only seem to view the kurds as the "mountain Turks who lost their language".
(which is kinda insulting.)
During the ottoman empire the kurds had at least some form of self automony.
Something ata turk got rid of to form a more western style goverment.
Which didn't fall him in good graces with them.
Language:
(self explanatory)
the goverment is trying to erase kurd language for decades.
history:
It isn't a secret that erdogan is rewriting history as he sees fit.
Including the kurd's history.
You want proof of this just try to find an old copy of ata turk's biography.
(and i mean realy old)
And then get a new one.
you'll see that many things are erased.
(Especialy about his views on religion)
*Reason 3:*
If you treat people like shit, they want to leave.
Like who is erdogan (and the administrations before him) hurting in responce to atacks?
Is it the terrorists or is it the normal kurdish population?
There is a kurdish region just over the border with turkey's kurdish region in iraq, *it is less bombed out than the turkish side* XD
Isn't it weird that the kurdish region in a country *at war* had a better quality of life than the one in turkey?
That says a lot don't you think?
And most of them don't even like the pkk, Even the ones that would like independece.
But they are always the ones who get punished.
Jungkook The Fencing Man it is a natural right of every ethnicity to separate and form tier state. Turks must learn this to stop suffering from their their ignorance. If Turks don't like it, they are also free to split from Turkey and to make their counrty.

Still it is socially obligatory for male to prepare “housing and car” when one has to marry.
The purpose of military conscription is to protect the assets/investments of the rich elites and politicians in the country. Not to defend the country as most are made to believe.
Completely depends on your view
Partly true.
Personally I think that professional soldiers are better prepared mentally to face combat and the sort of mental training they go through Is damaging to one's mind and If applied on conscripts (soldiers doing mandatory service) It would have many negative effects on society as a whole, and even without this crippling mental training this one guy reports having a lowered self esteem and repressed opinions around elders. That Is why conscripts miss this essential part of their training and that Is why a single professional soldier Is worth ten conscripts. In a situation that would make the conscript hesitate, the professional will shoot and In a situation when the conscript will panic, the professional will act calm and handle the situation. That Is why I believe that incentives like a higher salary and more generous support for veterans should be provided In order for more people to volunteer and eleminate countries's dependancies on mandatory service.
I also believe that In South Korea's case In particular, they maintain their huge army as a show for north korea. Their actual Intentions are not to wage warfare as an armed conflict with a rogue nuclear nation would go as well as you'd expect and the result would be more or less the same regardless of army strenght: total nuclear annihilation. In south korea's case these conscripts are there as a cheaper variant of the professional soldiers; A way for the government to save Itself a few million dollars per year In this geopolitical theatrical perfomance. Completely understandable but It still sucks that these people have to lose two years of their lives because their government has been playing a 50 year long game of "who's got the bigger dick" with north korea

conscription may have been necessary in the past but not anymore
The issue is, that without conscription S. Korea would not have the capability to have a military with the numbers required by the nation. Being a nation of 50 Million people. South Korea currently has a standing military of 495,000 with 3 million in reserve, this is with conscription. The USA being a nation of 318 million, Has 1,400,000 active duty members serving in the military with 1.1 million in reserve. The USA being a much larger nation can sustain these numbers without conscription, remember also that the United States does retain a draft registry to conscript its citizens in times of war. Only 0.4% of the US population is serving in the military. If South Korea had the same percentage of citizens in an all volunteer military there would only be 200,000 members of their armed forces, a 94% decrease. South Korea is technically still at war with North Korea, although a ceasefire was agreed upon at the end of the Korean War, A peace treaty was never signed. Thus South Korea is a nation currently in a state of war although there is currently no armed conflict. With the way the world is right now, the future is very uncertain and we really have no idea what will come and I believe S. Korea needs to be prepared for anything with a large, powerful military.
I agree that they need the military power to fight off any potential invaders, however I agree with of the person's point of view in the video. Having all these young, unmotivated people in the military by force will only create a group of low morale, low skill, and "cannon fodder" in real times of war. In my opinion, it would make a lot more sense for S. Korea to have a small, but professional force made up of volunteers. They could also incentives people into joining, showing it as prestigious, having patriotism, or other social economical benefits. In this day and age of high tech warfare, I don't believe that just having more people will win you the war, and considering that S. Korea has a much more technological advance military, the greater number is not as important compared to having a prepared and motivated elite force.
Conscription even in war is just retarded, they should mobilize partisans. Look at the Soviets in WW2, many conscripted young men were like sheep to the Germans. When it comes down to the most important thing in war, it is about morale, discipline, and the will power of the soldiers. It does not matter how big your army is(like the Soviets), the thing is, are they doing it because this is what they want to do? And like DreamerXGX said, Korea should work with what willing soldiers they have and make them into a really powerful but small unit and he also mentioned high tech, this also breaks conscription, if one nuke can destroy a whole city, your soldiers are gone, so what is a big army going to contribute to your country?
if north Korea collapse then yea i dont think south korea needs a conscription base army do you want to know what country really dont need military conscription at all Singapore my country 2 years of full time military service and 10 years of reservist cycle duty and not an enemy in site all our neighboring countries are part of asean which we are a member of
Naive to think SG doesn't need conscription based army. SG has a history of occupation during WW2 and potential aggressors directly north of the border in malaysia, and also possibly south/southeast in indonesia. Are you unaware of the radical movements which occur in those countries and also in south thailand? Not to mention, SG and malaysian relations have been rocky since 1965. SG is a small city nation, and without a conscription based army, it would be rendered powerless to neighbouring countries wishing to take it. Although SG is "big boy" in the small-market which is ASEAN, without a proper army, or any other form of defense, SG wouldn't be able to brandish the power it does in the area right now. Moreover, Korea's military conscription isn't solely based on the existence of North Korea. The Korean peninsula is bordered by two of the largest and most powerful countries in the world (China, Japan) and also Russia. For a mid-sized country like Korea, a military is crucial for survival in the area. Do you think Singapore could have even survived if it were located in east asia? Would it survive with only a full-time army in SEA? I'm highly doubtful.
The reason why South Korea has mandatory 2 year (give or take) military service is because they're still technically at war with North Korea.
Honestly, I can see why they have such a law in place for all citizens of South Korea, but as mentioned in this video, I think it is unnecessary. They're forcing its citizens to go through 2 years of their lives to train themselves in case of a war.
It's been a little over 60 years since the armistice was signed and there hasn't been any conflict.
Also, the fact that women are not forced into the military service can be viewed as sexist.
A lot of these rules and laws in South Korea (not saying others countries are not like this) are antiquated and created decades ago as a precaution. Times have changed a lot and I think that they should make military service a volunteer basis. That way, they're more likely to train more dedicated and specialized military personnel rather than people who are there because they are told to be there.
The requirement of being a male, physically fit, and mentally fit sort of makes my point a bit relevant since they have exceptions to it. So some people could use their family's wealth or political influence to get out of service. Some could intentionally gain weight to get our of service, Some could (god forbid) get into a physical accident that leaves them permanently scarred.
Granted there are other ways people can service like working at a company, but even then they have to do the basic training thing from what i understand.
And to be honest, if there is an actual war between the North and South Korea, I feel like a large majority would be handled by South Korea's military allies like the US.
Basically, I'm saying that the mandatory military service requirement is a very old world, antiquated practice that needs to be changed.
xxnike629xx the reason why there hasnt been any big conflict is because of these contingencies such as mandatory conscription and defense. Its true if wae breaks America will lead the war but how many korean casualties?
What!, even in india it not mandatory with population of 1.3 billion and having two big enemy's countries china and pakistan
Just my opinion but I don’t think anyone should be forced to join the military, especially just because of their gender
Agreed
Military service MUST NOT be mandatory. State should not have a right to force citizens to do something but simply obey the laws. Serving the home country is a good thing. But any legal work is serving to the country. Then, why only military service must be mandatory? It is not fair
The issue is, that without conscription S. Korea would not have the capability to have a military with the numbers required by the nation. Being a nation of 50 Million people. This being said, I think the Republic of Korea should retain conscription, but should give members better salaries and benefits.
Nolan Cummings Now that in the recent census where females outnumbered males, what will be the future of this mandatory service?
***** Robotics and AI. But your average Koreans want peace and reunification with the North, as well as expulsion of American military presence in their soil and formulate an independent foreign policy
Nolan You've copied and pasted the same response in 4 comments... This doesn't do anything to make your point any more agreeable because you think it is. It just makes you look like you are parroting and regurgitating something without actually having your own opinion, even if that's not your intention.
While yes there needs to be more benefits for military service. I do not think conscription or the draft is a good idea for a democracy at all. No one should have to be forced into the military because of some war/fear mongers law.
Nolan Cummings well written
democracy is an overused term that is very laughable. South korea is a presidental constitutional republic. It runs on laws that people can vote Representatives to veto these draft laws. Its ironic how you say its not a good idea for a democracy when the textbook definition of a democracy is ruled by the majority.

i felt sorry for the guy that got dumped because he was in the army ; ( who ever she was dont worry she wasn t worth it u ll find someone better that will stay with u trough all the hard times :*
Put a poll, if most people don't want the draft remove it from law. If most people do want it then check if most girls also voted to keep it. Then add girls to the draft too.
@✷jin's ramen⁷✷ hmm good point, removal isn't really an option at this point.
nah democracy is stupid
Then south Korea would be invaded in no time

Turkey has mandatory military service as well. However you can choose to pay a large sum of money to the government so you can be exempted. I was born in the U.K but my dad is Turkish. I want to have a Turkish citizenship but that means when I turn 18 I will have to do military service.....something I want to avoid at ALL costs.
I think the idea of mandatory military service is very good for people and the nation, however, I think it would be good to make it a little less shitty of an experience lol Especially in S Korea who is always in constant threat of N Korea, having a huge pool of people in your society who know basic military structure, how to operate the stand issue military weapons of your nation and basic military tactics and stuff is good. But if you make them all hate the experience and make their life suck, lose girlfriends etc, they might just end up resenting their lost time they could have had with family, friends, career growth etc and dislike their nations military and government instead of grow stronger as a nation.
It's understandable why it's mandatory in South Korea because of the small population and them being neighbors to North Korea. I'm sure there's other reasons too. It makes me wonder, how many Korean citizens would volunteer if it wasn't mandatory?
I just think that any country that still has mandatory miltary service and death penalty must have something wrong at the core of their systems.
@@moelester2797 Sadly I never had a chance to spend enough time in Finland to say something about this specific case. All I can say is that there are many Countries that are at the peak of technological evolution (and everything that comes with it) but most of the time those Countries have, for example, the highest suicide rates in the world. I think every case has to be analyzed from an objective, generalized point of view. Am I too naive to think and believe that we shouldn't be prepared to resolve our issues as humankind with other means instead of plain force and violence?
Death penalty isn't bad
He said, "If you have less teeth you get exempted!"
Why so savage? LOL
The guy in the grey sweater who was advocating for voluntary enlistment into the army is totally correct.
if anything was to happen, god forbid, it would be better to have people who are actually well-trained and prepared as career soldiers rather than just ordinary citizens who are only there for 2 years just to fulfill their mandatory service
the s. korean government should somehow encourage more voluntary enlistment for *both* women and men - provide some really good benefits or pay since it's a super crucial job anyways
Thank you asian boss
You never fail to make me learn something interesting and new

Interesting topic to hear about from a foreigner's perspective.
Im currently doing my mandatory military service in the Finnish Defence Forces and the serving times for us range from 6 months to a year. I think that 2 years is too much for a young person to sacrifice for ones country. I dont know how it is in South-Korea but we can spend most weekends at home and most evenings we can leave the military base to do whatever we like. And we can use our phones.
Don't know how 2 years is too much because if you think about it, 2 years is not a big portion of your life. The Korean system of course needs some changes in to the quality of life in the military just like in Finland. The 6 months to 1 year doesn't sound like much but if you think about it in 2 years you can learn a lot more. So my point is that in the end 2 years in the military is not that bad. 1/22 res gonakorppi

In my country Pakistan, our military is in the top 10s also but contrary to Korea getting into the military academy is quite a competition! the selection is quite strict and youngsters even wait to try for next terms on failure.

Imagine you are at your peak, at your best time to chase your life, your dreams, when you are about to start a new life as adult and your country told you to leave and sacrifice it all for years with no reward. That's hard. I salute every one on them
Correct me if i'm wrong. But what the last guy said is quite true.. its like conditioning the people to be sheep without criticizing or questioning orders. This makes it quite easy for government to take steps in mass mind control.
In India there no such rule of mandatory. and women can also join the military if they want nd in our country voluntarily most people applied for the military service which is more than the requirements. :)
Ya, that's true because I am also an Indian 😊
But actually the thing is that as you know India is the 2nd most populous country in the world so our population is veryyyy large😂 so here are many persons sufficient enough to serve in the military sector and that's why it is kept voluntary....but in South Korea it's population is very small so that's why there every male is being forced to take military training.
국방의 의무에서 배제된 것이 오히려 여성에 대한 차별이다. -공감-
We have the same "problem" in Iran. I just ask you a couple of questions: "What if I don't want to participate in a war which previous generations started it? Why I have to pay the price for it? And you think it makes me to like the country? Or to hate it?" That's all.
I think that Korean men should choose
Conscription is expensive for any economy.
Conscription of women isn't a good idea, but there are many jobs in the armed forces that women do very well.
wow. I am from America and I am a female. My brother has not served in the military but when he turned 18 he had to register for the draft. I am not sure if they still do this but back in the early 2000's they still had to. I, myself, went into the military at 17. Right after high school. It was a learning experience and I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. It taught me a lot of life skills and how to push forward and get things done. I served for 4 years and was discharged honorably. If I could go back and do it all over again, I would but I would have stayed in for at least 8 to 10 years. Such is the life. For other people, I think you need a certain temperament to join. They push you, test you and hit every button you wish they wouldn't hit. But you have to reign it all in and take it. Most people can't do it. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. I am surprised I lasted 4 years and wanted to go back.
yingfaa they still need to retain the selective services but really the program has been inactive since 1973. Especially with the jugnement of the joint chiefs and Secretary of Defense that program will not be activated in foreseeable future because all the capabilities that the US Military has right now are geared toward an all voluntary force and the type of effectiveness we have doesn't make anyone miss the days of the draft.
trying my best to understand about this issue since Jin enlisted yesterday. i miss him so much!
The South Korean government may want to offer "Alternative Service" where you join a law enforcement agency, intelligence agency or other "protective" agencies, such as firefighters, paramedics, or specialized medical services(Medical school/ advanced dentistry )

Mandatory service is stupid, I am in Greece and here it is the same (but not as long as in S. Korea). I feel like mandatory military service boosts the rift between nations and people, there it is S. Korea vs N. Korea, Japan etc, here it is Greece vs. Turkey and it is dumb... It is time things change...
Korea is surrounded by large countries just like China, Japan, Russia.
Not because of North Korea
I'm glad I watched this and heard what people had to say about the mandatory Korean military enlistment for Korean men. ☺

we technically do have mandatory military service in the states. you have to register for selective service if you are between the ages of 18 and 25 incase there is draft

military service exemption for women. If a woman is going to be president of the country, and Commander in chief of the armed forces, then women must shoulder the same burden. I have a hard time with a woman ordering a man to fight, especially young men with their lives ahead of them, and not having to share the same burden of defending the country as men.
