Hi Mike, with regard to not drilling right through, I will cut piece of pvc pipe and use it to sleeve the drill bit, making it so that only the depth you need of the drill bit pokes through and it is physically impossible/much much harder to cock it up. You're making me consider covering my filthy headliner!!

Looking Good Mike. A vote here for a video of re-covering the head liner - a job I've got to do. I am currently in a Beduin Tent!

I have a note for doing a headliner video, but I do not have any jobs lined up in the future - the most important thing is to use the best quality contact adhesive you can get - standard upholstery adhesive is not good enough, and there are only a few can adhesives I would recommend - problem is heat in summer can cause the glue to become unstuck
We use DAP Weldwood and use a HVLP spray gun to apply - makes a nice even coat and lays a 1 foot wide 'fan' of adhesive on the material - it is most important not to put too much adhesive on as it can soak into the foam of the liner and when you stretch and form the liner, it can mark the outer finish

Put a small block of wood behind the angle strip to prevent drill damage to the roof skin.

As if you heard my question: How do I get the headlining out ? - same day you posted that one !
There, where the fittings go, I like to install riveted nuts and on that instead of the fir tree fitting I like to add screws to fit an Airline Track ...
Your video did answer my question - will go for it as soon as it'll become a little warmer here...
Thank you so much for all your help and also the good times just watching!
    Cheers Axel

Thank you for your support Axel - the fir tree clips are terrible - I have tried all sorts - popping them in boiling water to make them softer, bu they are just too hard
I drill them out to remove them to save damage to the material
I was thinking of a white aluminium strip screwed to the roof as the edge of the headlining tends to expand with the damp over the years

I remember installing front windshield with my wife....hell of a job. But we done more faster than those guys at one hour.
Lot's of people crack their glass when installing it. Better let the professional do it.

When the two guys who came to fit the window, (the professionals) surely the clue would have been the name board outside and all the Land Rovers doted about.
At this point, a "professional would have thought, I have an opportunity to learn here, let's ask the Land Rover man if he knows any tips to getting the screen into an Defender.
    No, just keep hitting it.
Hubris is strong with these guys.

If I had an assistant who knew the job, and the suckers for the glass, I could have done it myself - it is so easy to crack these laminate screens

Great. My head lining is doing the usual sagging in the recesses and around the Alpine windows. I am contemplating using fibreglass sheet and resin to try to stiffen up again, hoping it might help with protection from condensation as well. Have you any thoughts or recommendations on that?
Ive plastic wrapped the exterior roof (black metallic) so hoping the seams are now sealed, and thinking about using the lead flashing substitute to line the roof metal (inside) to stop the booming / noise. Did it on a camper conversion - its the future and way cheaper than the Dynastuff-costa-packet! I did put the 1" foamex in the camper so not sure if that should be done as well......

    Hi Mike.
How do the rear grab handles above the back door fix to the roof? And do you think it would be possible to bond some aluminium box section to the roof for the headliner over rear door to act as brackets for the clips. As my roof hasn't got brackets but retrofitting a full headliner in a 90.
    Thanks alot mate

The grab handles screw to the interior gutter rail if I recall correctly

Hi Mike -- I have a '94 NAS D90 Port of Entry model. I'm slowly converting it to be (almost) a true SW. I've got the internal/external roll cage fitted now, have "beduin tent" front head liner in the front but nothing in the back. The PoE models have two part rear door with upper "cat flap" style which has hinges on the inside. Any thoughts on where I can get a headliner that would fit? I'm worried about the cat flap hinges and the internal roll cage getting in the way...

Surely Def/D1/RRC alloys will fit a 200Tdi without spacers?

@@BritannicaRestorations I’ve used several sets of D1/RRC Freestyle 16” rims on my ‘85 Ninety. Edit: It has discs on all 4, but the alloys fit without centre caps.

Yes because it has disc all round the problem is 200Tdi etc had drums on the back and different hubs front and rear

Have really enjoyed these various videos. Any tips on how to / before attempting to remove the headlining to recover it. Is it fairly straightforward? I can find plenty of recover / refit but no remove so I’m guessing it is pretty straightforward....[natural born optimist]

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  4 года назад +1

It really is easy - if you have a station wagon take the centre section out first
You have to almost fold the rear to get it out so be careful not to crack it!
