In one of my campaigns I play a half-orc barbarian, I used rope to turn my barrel into a makeshift backpack for my 20 long swords, the DM though but was hilarious (20 STR, 500 pounds and 7 feet tall btw)
One of my players visited a shop where they sold life-sized wooden bears. She was dying at the realization she could actually get one and carry it on her 4’5 dwarf’s back the entire game because we don’t do encumbrance 😂
My team uses a bag of holding for all our items that we don't carry personally and a bag of colding for food for our pets and a souless body from one of our teammates.😂
@OnyxTheThird basically I rolled a nat20+13 on sleight of hand and stole the deck of many things from one of our ex foes an evil druid named rybeck and then one of our players pulled a card and got the gem card first and got impulsive and polled a second one and got the void.😂 so for a while kayla's body sat on the deck of the airship but we decided to just throw the body in the bag of holding till we locate the soul. 🤣
This gives me flashbacks to when I wanted to maximize the amount of water we could carry, which led to over an hour of debate and calculations. Safe to say that I am now banned from bringing up water ever again.
for a second I was just like "oh yeah that's only like 100ft per axe, that's reasonable" then while writing the comment to say that I realised that 9 axes and 100 ft of rope around each might be a little heavy
@@JedimindkillerjrYou also have to carry it around for the other 99% of its service life not being used in lethal combat. Also remember that whoever manufactured it possibly has to make many different things and ~20 lb of 12th century steel ingots might cost as much as an ox, so they probably don't want to waste metal.

I think dnd should hqve a diagetic carrying capacity sheet for each personal container the pcs have on them. Instead of weight, its based on size and how much u can actually fit in there. Little minigame
@@g80gzt Well, it could be 2d. Just have a longsword be like 2 spaces long by 1 space wide. Containers would have a certain amount of spaces, and a threshold they can be overfilled with an extra row or two of spaces below the regular allowed amount.
Once, I made a NPC with the intention of being "just a pack mule". He was a Totem Barbarian, Goliath with a magic ring that let him cast on himself "Enlarge". Goliath can carry as a size bigger and with "enlarge", he can carry as a "huge" creature. Totem barbarian get "Aspect of the beast" at lvl 6, he choose the bear, that DOUBLE your carying capacity and at level 20 they can get a 24 in STR. So, the math is ((15lbx24STR)x4Huge)x2Bear=2880lbs in total
I think carrying capacity would be a more interesting mechanic if it limited how heavy are objects you can lift, not total weight of every single one. Also as a leeway for DM to be able to easily say no when a player tries to do some cheese with inventory.
The only time I saw my DM question how people carried anything was when he found out one couple had 1000 ball bearings and 100 candles. They won by reminding him that they bought a horse and carriage.
There was a point in our adventures where we devised a plan which involved my (flying) character carrying our warlock, only it wouldn’t work with all the stuff he had in his backpack (too heavy for me to lift both him and his shit). So we figured we leave his bag for a moment and grab it in a few, only of course our plan backfired and we ended up running away to the mountains and wandering there for about a tenday before we could safely return to the stash where his backpack was sitting. During that tenday, he had to make a makeshift tent from twigs, moss and such for every long rest taken and had no smokes and no liquor, which sort of disrupted the way he would usually behave 😂
I pay attention to encumbrance, but have the idea that since a backpack can hold up to 30 pounds of equipment (ignoring dimensions of said equipment because I'm not smart enough) so the backpack basically gives an extra 30 pounds of carry capacity for whatever you carry
As a dm I'm kinda w/e about carrying capacity - its honestly not very fun to be super picky about it. That said no they cant carry siege weapons around

Battle axes IRL typically topped out at 7 lbs. What you've really gotta worry about is the 200 lbs of rope (about 1/4 lb per foot for 1" thick rope).
@@tylergodfrey5064 really? that seems very light for a battle axe, tho rope, yeah, there's no way to cut it, that's gonna be heavy
