  • USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Portside Rudder and Rudder Stock Installation
Take a look at this time-lapse video as HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division installs the portside rudder and rudder stock on USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as the ship’s extensive refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) continues. The rudder, weighing in at 49 tons, is lowered into the dry dock and positioned into place. Next, the approximately 27 foot long rudder stock weighing 20 tons, is lowered into and through several layers of the aircraft carrier to hold the rudder in place.

note that the pin is cryogenically cooled so it goes in easy and will expand as it warms up. great video.

I miss my former home so glad she is getting the needed attention. May she sail for a long time!

I worked on CVN's for 10 of my 27 years at PSNS, so I saw this happen a few times. But I never get tired of seeing it.

Why don't they use directional azipod electric motors on these new aircraft carriers? Then no need for a rudder.
