First, congrats on the channel; it's refreshing to see not well-known vehicles, such as our M-55S. We would appreciate the mention that the M-55S and the video is from the Park of Military History Pivka and our channel. The tank is in our working collection, and it is a blast to drive! If you find yourself in Slovenia, you're more than welcome to visit!
Say what you will about the other aspects of the tank, but IMO, it looks really cool with that curved ERA placement. At least this tank can win in a fashion contest against Arjun.
Ya, but remember its pedigree, the T-34 & T-44 for the haul, and IS-2 for the turret. When, Churchill and Western Generals witnessed the Victory Parade in Berlin, they nearly went into cardiac arrest when they saw the IS-2’s and IS-3’s. Compared to anemically armed and armoured Limey/Yanky tanks, the IS-series were monsters, and had the desired intimidation value.
I mean, if a tank can look aesthetically pleasing to a point where it looks very different to its original model it's already doing something right, T-55s especially given how many countries used them and made their own mods to it.
Finnaly we re on the list. The military was selling them and i think only one was sold to a czech private collector who paid around 850.000€ for one of those if i remember correctly
Agreed, my dad was a tankinst. He was a gunner in the T55. He likes tanks like me and He said the same thing comparing old modified t55s. Its not a bad tank its just outdated

Sorry RedEffect, but no matter what tank you examine and call the worst, Arjurn will always stay in our minds no matter what and I think you already know why.
@@SolarFlareAmerica it's better to just present the facts in a more attractive manner and leaving it up to the reader or viewer to make their own opinions. That's why I like how him and other similar youtubers don't just flat out say one tank is the best.
Still the best-looking T-55 upgrade out there, this thing looks really nice with all these upgrades and honestly if it did have some upgraded sights and engine it would make for a good border guard tank or something similar.
Yeah, just upgrade to thermal sights, especially with independent thermals for gunner and commander, and it would be quite solid. Of course it still all comes down to crew training, leadership, and logistics. But that would give a good crew the tools they need.
Vietnamese T 54M is very good looking, and suprise, it has thermal imaging. That tank will be good enough in a battle against Chinese sneaky Type 15. T 90S will wait at 2nd line to confront Type 96 and 99.
Thank you for reducing volume on outro melody. It's not ripping my ears anymore. You make good videos with interesting topicsand is refreshment on youtube. Thank you.
@@ricky7426 bro the crews have to be trained and like the video says these aren’t good tanks and you have plenty of T-64,72 and twardys along with what ever you are taking from Russia that you should use first
The M-55S is actually an awesome weapons platform. Modernizing a tank that came from the 50's, in order to meet the standards of the late 90's to early 2000's, is already quite an impressive feat all by itself. Salute to Slovenia.
@@jbremc22 Still... But when you look at the stats, then you can definitely see all the possible potential if the tank were to be really pressed into active service.
I'm quite surprised to see a video on M-55S, I was under the impression it's too obscure of a tank. So, quite nice to see someone talk about a tank from the country I live in heh.
You would think with how recent the modernization was it would have a few extra add ons but honestly it would have been a waste of money and resources to do so with how old the platform is at least in my opinion.
Considering that RPG7 and AK47 are still one of the most popular weapons you see on the modern field, I would say T55 still has some potential to cause damage to infantry or any type of infantry carrying vehicles... Tank like any weapon is only good as its crew and the command personnel. If you give T90, Abrams or Leo2 to a poorly trained crew they would not have a lot of chances against well trained crew in this T55S. This scenario is very unlikely to happen but still possible considering how many Turkish and Saudi Arabian Leopards and Abrams were burned by insurgents in the Middle East during the last 5 years .....
@@Nikowalker007 good point, was thinking more on the technical side of things but i definitely see where you are coming from with crew experience. It is definitely an important aspect to take into consideration. The things that I thought were interesting was the ERA compared to other modernizations, the LWR and a more advanced sight. But you're right, all that means nothing if you can't use it properly hahaha
I think the t-55 would be a fine tank to upgrade, since it's very similar to later soviet and Russian tanks anyway It's main problem is it's lack of any fire control systems for the gun, even a stabilizer. A two plane stabilizer and even modern ammunition for the same cannon would do a lot for it.
@@sethmullins8346 from t-54b onwards, T-54 and T-55 variants were equipped with STP-2 Tsyklon two-plane stabilization for main gun. There simply are NO modern tank rounds for its original main gun (D-10T). Most modern Apfsds rounf is 3BM11 with penetrator 3BM25 "Izomer" introduced in the late seventys offering around 280mm at 2km, which is absolutely outdated nowadays. Heat is not much better, 3UBK9M provides 350mm at 2 km. Needless to say, the gun itself is outdated. It has a terrible fume extractor, is rifled and overall obsolete. And there won't occur any new ammo as there are only two other 100mm guns in active service: 1st russian 2A70, used on BMP-3 which is a low pressure gun, and 2nd MT-12, which is a smoothbore gun. Neither's ammo is interchangable with D-10T (rifled, full pre)ssure while the latter is obsolete as well. The only rays of hope are atgm like tandem shaped 9M117M1 "Arkan" providing penetration of 750mm after ERA, which is neither state of the art nor great but not that bad. But only T-55M and T-55AM received the necessary guidance equipment so you would have to add this. And a tank cannot rely on atgm solely.
id love if war thunder added those t-55 modefications. its also one of my favorites since there are soo many types of t-55ths , i like soviet cold war tanks in general too
the m55-s was retired before it entered service... it actually was just in the reserve its entire life ... i drove one and to be fair in the 90s it seemed like a good idea since slovenia didnt really have any other weapons to counter another yugo attack

idk, the t55 is a very interesting vehicle. its small relative to most tanks, but carries a full size gun. a modern interpretation of the t55 would be very neat. it's light, its low. electronics dont really take any space anymore, so that should be able to be good. it's not really a light tank, but you get two of them for the mass of an M1abrams
The T-34 is still in active service in Cuba, North Korea, Yemen, Vietnam, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Guinea, and a couple other countries. None have been updated since the 1950's. I'm pretty sure THAT is the worst tank in modern service.
I came to watch his video after finding out Ukraine, is going to be given them very soon and I do believe with the upgrades to the engine and thermal imaging you mentioned
Interesting video. They have recently been passed on to Ukraine. Useless? Not at all. Tank-to-tank battles are rare, so the 28 tanks will come in handy for some Territorial Defense units holding the line or on the frontier with Bielorussia. I would guess that they will be organized into platoons of 4 tanks each, in order to compensate their lower levels of firepower, but make the best use of better systems than legacy T-72.
@@Palach624 Yes and even an M113 or BMP offers better crew protection than what a mortar or towed artillery team has. Ukraine has had some succes using tanks as substitutes for self propelled guns and in that role the M-55S shouldn't be that much worse than a modern MBT.
I mean a L7 is an L7, plenty of modern wheeled tanks are being made with L7 or equivalent 105mm guns. The chassis is trash, because it's old, but the FCS are pretty much more modern than any Leopard 1 that were sent there and the added protection is better than no protection. Supposedly few examples also survived direct hits from artillery and AT weaponry. As a tank compared to the modern MBTs it's pretty bad, but as a gun it's pretty similar to a lot of other 105mm equipped vehicles. If I had an option where I would want to be on the battlefield between the M-55S and a 105mm Centauro, I'd pick the M-55S.
The tank was a 'child' of Balkan wars and sanctions imposed on Slovenia, making T-55, which were inherited from EX-YU in bad state, suitable for use. Ignoring all the politicizing in Slovenia how the money has been spent it must be remembered that this project was meant to deter any sort of para-state attack on Slovenia and is a part of a larger package of arms that was bought including the towed Soltam TN90 guns and 120mm Soltam mortars. Kfir jets were also evaluated but later the decision was made for F-16 (examples that were not sold to Pakistan due to nuclear sanctions) and Cobra gunship combo, all of which were scrapped when things got back to normal in Ex-YU. . The battlefields of the 90's were at the nearest point 45 kilometers from Slovenia. The tank was mostly expected to be fighting against WW2 stock as well as T-55 of ex-JLA. It was also meant to bolster the Slovenian arms industry, directing it into 'western' weapons systems. Technical details, the armor is a Blazer, so called Super Blazer (what that should mean is unclear), all together the modernization cost around 52 million euros, for 30 tanks, with all the ammo and spare parts around 2,6 millions was spent on each tank. Most of the work was done in steel works Ravne ST. One was sold with ammunition on public auction two years ago, for the rest of 27 no buyer was found and they are in deep storage while one is meant as a museum piece. The price paid for the one sold was 820 000 euros.
The gun is what makes the M-55S valuable to Ukraine. The British gun is compatible with a wide range of modern ammunition, including armor-piercing sabot rounds that can penetrate the armor of a modern T-72. More importantly, several Western companies produce 105-millimeter shells, meaning Ukraine shouldn’t struggle to maintain a steady supply of ammunition for its single M-55S battalion.
A worse tank it may be I don't know but because Germany has kept blocking the transfer of Leopard II's Ukraine gladly accepts this from a very generous neighbour...
I can tell you from first hand experience that the m551 Sheridan has to be in the top 3 worst tanks ever. I spent 8 years on those God awful lil beasts and I cannot think of anything nice to say about them. I think that if they were ever to get into the real shit they woulda ve roasted. But... They were alot of fun. Airborne

Sorta like the M60 upgrades STILL on the market, these upgrades arent really to be used in tank-on-tank combat. Just having heavy armor in an area or situation where there is no other real heavy armor, REGARDLESS of what YOUR heavy armor is, is a big deal. Hell, having a WWII T34 against guys in trucks with machine guns is a major up to your side. Having an upgraded T55 with ERA, laser warning, and even passive NV is better than not having heavy armor at all.
Cant overemphasize how relevant this comment is. Not all conflicts and dare I say the vast majority of them have tank battles. What one tank can do to another is irrelevant in that context. They are used as mobile bunkers/pillboxes raining HE on everything. T-55 can be terrifying if you got nothing to counter it.
This is not a bad vehicle for Ukraine by any means. 1. It has more than enough protection against small arms and even heavy machine guns. (given they don't expose the sides and rear if we talking about autocannons and stuff) 2. ERA that can stop any light AT weapon Russia has. 3. Laser tracking system. 4. Thermals? 5. Enough protection for most indirect arty hits. Pretty much heavy armored IFV with comparatively great firepower not to mention it is soviet so Ukrainian crews can be trained using it within days.
Ukraine has so many tanks now so 28 even if they not the best is just a drop in the bucket, better something than nothing Also Ukraine has a whole line of outposts with Belarus that mostly stuffed by National Guard and has all the "B" type weapons, so i guess these tanks will go there

Oh well...there is an worse tank from Yugoslav War era. Bosniak forces during the war had some T-55's and have made a variant to make the tank "better". They had added the turret of M18 Hellcat(tank destroyer from WW2) on the T-55 hull. Idk if there is much data about this cursed tank but it would be nice if RedEffect covers the topic.
They didn't try to make it better they just had a t-55 hull and a Wolverine or Jackson turret (not exactly sure) that they somehow fitted on the t-55 hull. When you don't have anything you take whatever you can.
I wonder how the Vietnamese T55M will be. They drop the Israeli T55M3 upgrade, which have almost the same configuration to this to do their own upgrade due to financial problem. They produce some ERA locally borrow the Israel ERA technology, few new electronics and still using the D-10T guns, only adding in something to improve it accuracy. Although its good for the local military industry, but i doubt it will beat anything that come from China for the last 20 years
Thing about all these old vehicles is if the weapons and machinery is still in working order and it's still viable from a logistical perspective then it makes sense to keep them on or upgrade them here and there as opposed to just abandoning them. I just wonder how useful all that heavy steel armour is?
Agree that there's a distinction between a souped-up old tank being 'bad' and a newer build tank being a different kind of 'bad. Can't really compare the two.
Some of these will be sent to Ukraine. Having tanks is better than having none. It can take out T-72s. It can suppress defensive positions and it will crush infantry. It's not a great tank on its own but as a support tank it's way way better than a Humvee with a machine gun.
A true patriot should embrace such criticism, you can't fix a problem unless you know what it is and where it is. Being aware of your own strengths and weaknesses is paramount for the success of any nation, especially in war. Ignoring your own weakness goes against the core values of patriotism because it's counter productive in every way shape and form.
It's a mess. Our TR-85M1 is an upgrade to the TR-85, which was an upgrade to the TR-77, which was a slightly modified T-55... But yes, you're right, and he's being a hypocrite.
As a Slovenian let me explain to you how our defense spendings are regulated. The government must (In most cases) pick the cheapest option that fits all of the criteria to avoid overspending of public funds (a thing that became problematic in a lot of cases especially regarding the quality of purchased items). So a bunch of politicians playing generals decided to upgrade old worn-out tanks with Israeli technology instead of utilizing good and advanced Slovenian (domestic) companies to do the job (or just buy newer equipment on the EU market). I don't know if someone in the army told the politicians, hey, this stuff is ancient, and it's not worth a single cent, but now we have a bunch of them just laying there (If I oversimplify). So if you wanna help our economy after COVID just buy a bunch of them, maybe you will get a discount ;)

We needed some firepower in the early nineties. There was a small chance that we get tangled (again) in the Balkan conflict, so we upgraded what we coud. Ergo T-55s that coud more or less challenge T 34, T55, Helcat , M 60 and M-84 (yugo version of T-72). At this time Leopard 2a4 was half a million dollars a piece. These tanks are being replaced by patria amw armed with 50 caliber, so not much improvement in troop support.
Dunno, seems a comprehensive rebuild up to late '90s. 105 mm gun can fire heat, hesh, sabot. Perfectly fine for rearguard or checkpoints. The 28 Slovenia just gave Ukraine are probably going into those roles & may free up more modern/capable tanks. All good.
Great Video. I heard that they are now beeing "sold" to Ukrain. What do you think about that? My guess: Even if it is an old Tank and not very capable it's better to have a tank than not to have one. depending on the used case they can make difference.
TBH, considering the T62s present, they're...in many ways superior to those. A tank is better than no tank, and a tank with proper structure is better than none. The thing is, despite people in these comments calling these things useless, the L7 gun is more than capable of dealing with threats. I'm sure though, they'll avoid using them as 'anti tank' vehicles, and likely in an infantry support role--or very likely as trainers. Ukraine does need to continue training soldiers. More then that, a number of parts, due to soviet doctrine are usable on Ukrainian T64s. Even if they're not used as is for more than trainers--the parts that come with any sale could be used in centralized repair resources to fix road wheels, as an example.
I think it’s going to take a while before Ukraine starts using them even if they do because of the amount of T-72 type tanks from most eastern block countries they have been given and what they are capturing from Russia
For all the upset people in the comment section... I am Romanian, the TR 85M1 is so far our main MBT but, please guys, chill, it is pretty bad indeed (as a modern battle tank) There were some plans for an improved M2 version which was suppose to be only a short term solution until modern up to date Abrams or Leo2 would be aquired to take over the role of the land forces back bone. Am also pretty sure the Slovenian upgraded tank was also meant to extend a bit its life which, to a certain extent they did, not to turn it onto a modern military beast
Hello RedEffect, thanks for this video. What do you think of the T-55AGM ?, It is an update on the T-55 with a new 125mm gun, won't it give you better chances than the TR-85M1 and M-55S in a current conflict?
Even though it's outdated against modern tanks, it is still a good infantry support vehicle. It has relatively decent armor and its reactive armor should hopefully stand well against ATGMs.
The reactive armor layout on M55s is way better than TR-85M1. Also L7 gun, in their latest versions, tolerates higher pressure, so even if it had old L7 version, the M55s could be upgraded to the latest variant with ammo on-pair with 1990s 120mm ammo, something more than OK for everything but modern MBT frontal armor. As for the rest... M-55s should get a 800hp engine and APU, along with Thermals and some extra features. That would become M-55s a decent 2nd line tank, able to withstand single charge HEAT rounds along with AP / APFSDS rounds from many IVF guns and RPGs. Of course the lack of composite armor in both frontal plate and turret is a problem, since tandem HEAT would defeat that armor no problem, and by this point in time in 202x, the tandem HEAT rounds are pretty common even on RPG-7 and Karl Gustav, which are platoon level AT guns. So... all in all, i'd rather take a T-55M and apply 1st gen "Blazer" (i think blazer weight less and takes less space than Kontakt-1) reactive armor above the composite armor addon, along with the new tech present and missing in M-55s, Adding an 800hp engine (i like the V-85 variant of the V-5 soviet engine of the T-72B) replacing the D10T for the L7's most advanced gun, and maybe designing a tandem HEAT warhead for the main gun, along with APFSDS. That should be the ultimate T-55... still sub-par if compared to a modern MBT, but shurely a cheap yet decent vehicle for 2nd line and strategic reserve
Hi, interesting video, but u miss the main point of modernization and why it was done. Tanks were ordered for modernization when there was still danger od civil war and embargo and only Israels were prepared to do it, and with that modernization, fire power od T55 was upgrade to almost the leverl of M-84. For planed 30 mio $ thats the most that you can get. And i think engine is still original one inside and the communication systems are new, from Israel (Tadiran). Also dont forget, that T-55 shown quite good in Balkan wars. Easy to operate, and easy for maintanance. I know lot of M-84 had bad trained crew, and such crews didnt know how to use 100% of M-84 posibilities.
T-55 was a workhorse of Balkan wars but this was due to their avability and ease of logistics. M-84 was a lot superior and at the time a modern tank. It also could not be destroyed frontaly but only from the side. Unlike T-55.
If Israel was involved in the upgrading of those old T-55 tanks, then the TR 85M1s are probably better than you think. The Six Day War netted a cache of around 400 intact T-55s for Israel and they went to work improving them as the hybrid TI-67. The 100 mm gun was replaced by a 105 mm gun, the engine replaced with a diesel plant, air conditioning was installed and there were improvements to the TI-67s fire control system too. The upgraded tanks were put in reserve and I have never heard of them being used in actual combat, but its likely that the knowledge and experience on how to improve the T-55 was used to to upgrade the TR 85M1. Of course there is a limit to how much you can improve what is otherwise an obsolete antique, and it's apparent the upgrade program didn't do too well, but that isn't the fault of the T-55, so labeling it "the worst tank" is to say the least, unfair. In its day, the T-55 was formidable, but that day ended over 50 years ago.
It is not a bad tank, i would say it's around the same level of a T90 or perhaps even better in some aspects (commanders thermal sight and much better coverage of ERA on the turret). But unfortunately Czech has only very limited number of this tank I think 32
I personally think that the CM12 brave tiger from china is the worst tank pls do a vid comparing the tr 85M1 to the CM12 Edit: I accidentally put CM11 instead of CM12

The M-55S is actually an awesome weapons platform. Modernizing a tank that came from the 50's, in order to meet the standards of the late 90's to early 2000's, is already quite an impressive feat all by itself. Salute to Slovenia.
Slovenia never used them, basically government payed few millions to upgrade old tanks and then decided they are still out of date and storage them.
You should make a video about the PT-91.
But you're right, all that means nothing if you can't use it properly hahaha
I think the t-55 would be a fine tank to upgrade, since it's very similar to later soviet and Russian tanks anyway
It's main problem is it's lack of any fire control systems for the gun, even a stabilizer. A two plane stabilizer and even modern ammunition for the same cannon would do a lot for it.

Today it was confirmed from Slovenian government that 28 of this tanks will be donated to Ukraine. Slovenia will get 40 german 8x8 transporters

I mean they can probably be destroyed or damaged by most man portable rocket launchers but I'd still rather be inside of a T-55MS than M113 or a BMP.
@@Palach624 Yes and even an M113 or BMP offers better crew protection than what a mortar or towed artillery team has. Ukraine has had some succes using tanks as substitutes for self propelled guns and in that role the M-55S shouldn't be that much worse than a modern MBT.

It was considered as very bad tank right up until they were donated to Ukraine then suddenly they were "very good tanks with very good new equipment"
If I had an option where I would want to be on the battlefield between the M-55S and a 105mm Centauro, I'd pick the M-55S.

awesome content man, make a video on the Brazilian Osorio tank

I think the f 16s went to croatia not to us (Slovenia)
The gun is what makes the M-55S valuable to Ukraine. The British gun is compatible with a wide range of modern ammunition, including armor-piercing sabot rounds that can penetrate the armor of a modern T-72. More importantly, several Western companies produce 105-millimeter shells, meaning Ukraine shouldn’t struggle to maintain a steady supply of ammunition for its single M-55S battalion.
A worse tank it may be I don't know but because Germany has kept blocking the transfer of Leopard II's Ukraine gladly accepts this from a very generous neighbour...

Oh well 😂 the Ukrainians are using them so back on list for worst tank
@@michaelrego7433 Russians are bringing unmodified t54-55's so now it's second worst.
Still better then Arjunk :0
What do you think about czech t72m4cz ?
Id like to see a review of T72M4CZ as well!
It is not a bad tank, i would say it's around the same level of a T90 or perhaps even better in some aspects (commanders thermal sight and much better coverage of ERA on the turret). But unfortunately Czech has only very limited number of this tank I think 32
@@militaryanalysis5028 30 T-72M4CZ tanks and 3 VT-72M4 recovery tanks.
Fit some thermals and somehow fit an RC mg for the commander then I think it would be just fine for use supporting infantry but I am also pretty dumb.
I personally think that the CM12 brave tiger from china is the worst tank pls do a vid comparing the tr 85M1 to the CM12
Edit: I accidentally put CM11 instead of CM12
T-55 is a 70 Year old tonk, but still Functional, Obsolete but Functional
Coming to you from the future!!! 2022 to be exact and these tanks are now fighting in Ukraine, with Ukrainians against Russia.
There is a difference between old tank modification and brand new tanks that were already obsolete when produced :I
Fresh news, 28 is donated to Ukraine.
The Slovenian M-T55S tank is being sent to Ukraine. They said with all the upgrades it can take out a T-72 tank. At least its better than some of the Mad Max vehicles the Ukrainians are now using.
Well it will be good enough to fight the LPR DPR
Considering the quality of the Russian Army it could probably still take out a T-90M.
