Yeah - you likely know this, but let's just 'reveal' it, in case someone missed: the driver was in the caravan - why the blackened window.
The caravan at 6:00 had a fake driver and a real driver in the caravan. Super cleaver lmfao

First class entertainment. Lesson of the day, don't use bike tires, unless you are an engineer ( 6:40). Hero of the day was the guy backing with a caravan :D (5:56)
Caravan had a driver inside.
In northern Victoria, Australia, a town called Harrow has an annual soapbox meeting. The first corner is a hard left & if you don't have at the very least, wheelbarrow wheels, then they will just buckle & twist at that corner. So, no pram or bike wheels.
Some good bike wheels such as some DT Swiss, Crankbrothers, Santa Cruz, FLITE etc. with good spoke tension should be able to hold up. Good BMX 20 inch or smaller wheels (WTP, Odyssey, BOX) (as at 6:40 ) will also be more rigid. Also with + or fatty MTB or wide BMX tires to spread the load. plz don't r/woosh me, I'm being a bike nerd
@@jonathanbrown2485 The quality isn't of much importance. Bike wheels simply aren't designed for side loads, only loads in the plane of the wheel. The only part in the wheel that handles the side loads is the rim. Wider 19"/20" BMX rims would be much better indeed. Their small diameter reduces the moment with a about a third, and the extra width of the wheel probably triples the stiffness. I probably wouldn't use wide tires, but the narrowest i could fit instead. Since tires also aren't made for pure side loads, large ++tires would feel spongy and start to roll off the rim. A narrow tire would increase the stiffness and probably result in better handling of a soap box.
@@1951split You are 100% Correct, Wire Spoke wheels are NOT made for axial loads, Even CAR Wire Spoke wheels have a low threshold for axial load...Now had he used solid discs it would have worked...and narrow high pressure tires...also some camber on the front axle will help with axial load.

Quality mountanbike wheels work great we used them on an electric race car that hit speeds up to 80 mph at the local electro rally we used Kevlar tires aswell

From watching all these videos it amazes me that these teams will spend 20 hours on making it look funny and less than 10 minutes designing the front wheel/suspension system. Would love to see all the F1 Teams of the world compete with only 2000 dollars!

2:34 looks like the best design to go down the track, good sturdy wheels. I'd love to build one of these for a race like this someday! The caravan guy was incredible, though. Best driver on the course, no doubt!
It's been said, but reversing caravan guy is a legend. He handled that so well.
