  • Sparring bout between Jordan, instructor at Academy of Steel, Cardiff, and member of AHF vs Nick, instructor at AHF. We principally work from Bolognese sources for sword and buckler, currently training a two month block on Manciolino.

I remember about two decades ago first seeing sword and buckler. I was amazed at how much such a tinny shield can help.

Imagine just walking along and you see a couple of people just straight up fucking sword fighting

I like the way both combatants are so patient for their opponents next move, it makes them look so professional, and the way they twirl their swords and use such small shields makes it even more thrilling to watch. Keep it up please.

How tall is the lad in black? I wish I was shaped like that.

Jordan seems to be the more impatient fighter, he's the one attacking most of the time, opens himself more often as well. Also i see that many attacks deflect and land on the legs, especially at a very close distance.

is there any particularly good translations/sources for Bolognese sword and buckler that are good for individual study. My club is primarily sabre and Longsword but am interested in spending some time myself studying this system and much prefer the look/style of the italians to say i.33. any starting point would be greatly appreciated.

My advice would be The Complete Renaissance Swordsman: Antonio Manciolino's Opera Nova (1531), translation by Tom Leoni. And check out Ilkka Hartikainen YT videos too. As you already do those styles, work on the footwork lessons of the bolognese system, Ilkka has good videos on this. Use all your attacking techniques from sabre, add in back edge work for attacking and defence, and you'll have a good overview sorting. Then work from the source to pad out as you see fit.
