Reaching agreement on the meaning and ‘spirit’ of the Treaty of Waitangi - New Zealand’s founding document - has led to fierce debate and violent conflict between European settlers and Maoris since its signing in 1840 until the present day. This documentary style program looks at events leading up to the signing, consequences of the signing, the key points of difference in the two versions of the treaty, the treaty in the twentieth century, and the founding of the Waitangi Tribunal.

I also used this for my Modern Essay assignment, thank you so much!
You should've gone to speak with the kuia of my tribe...which incidentally did not sign the treaty and were therefore hunted down and murdered or taken in chains to the caves under Dundein where
they died. Women and kids starved to death in the dark and the youth and men were taken out daily to build by hand all those beautiful stone walls and buildings you see scattered around Otago.
Mind you, you no doubt would have failed intentionally you wrote an honest account.

This helped me on my essay at VUW uni - thanks
This clip has nothing to do with Te Titiri o Waitangi.
OK short video. I've seen worse. There's definitely alot more to it though! 🌱🌏💚
It goes over some of the reasons why it was signed I'm pretty sure.
And have the same rights that we do
That's why people should pick up a reputable book by the actual authors of Te Tiriti.. rather than cut and taped stupid nzland company contract!
Honour the treaty
OK short video. There's definitely alot more to it though! Best to go ask the people if you want the truth. 🌱🌏💚
Great video but too short. This only begins to scratch the surface.
Thank you 😊
The Treaty of Waitangi
Dear Sir,
Thankyou for the info on the Treaty of Waitangi. This document is unique in its identity as it is enacted in NewZealand ,a Pacific nation, even in the current and holds content in the transactions in land with the European arrivals as far back as the mid 1800s. The questions are in the conditions for land use and the land use practices for agriculture.
Wish the Treaty of Waitangi to be with us into the future.
Greetings.

Why is there no mention of the Musket Wars, at all, in this video?
It’s actually incredibly that there is no mention of the Musket wars.
Oh it’s the RNZ who made the video. That’s why they don’t mention the Musket wars.
@@claymosen963The Musket were sold to Maori by pakeha whalers for there own nefarious ends. So if it wasn't for them Maori wouldn't have muskets
@@stephenlennon7369Don't pretend maori were peaceful before muskets. They killed one another for hundreds of years. They participated in cannibalism.
i used this for class thank u so much
There were people in NZ before Maori, a new Video called "Poukawa Revisited" shows human occupation at 7170yrs radiocarbon dated and under the Taupo ashbands and deeper .. some of the dating goes back 10,000 years .. anyway it has only just been released to the public
Also, Moriori, who were exterminated by the Maori, by using Portuguese muskets.

I don´t know where you got your facts from but one thing for sure maori were the first to do ram raids.

Someone help me, I need an answer of the people who have chosen to support te Tiriti o waitangi is/are
Dont they play a huge part in Maritime trades?
Maori = Original P&O Lines.
The Treaty of Waitangi was set out on Patuone two dog skins. All Treaty Principles was printed on Patuone two dog skins and signed. A young Native Boy was offered to Queen Victoria to raise and take care of as a living honour Between Queen Victoria and The Natives.
Australia is different from New Zealand. First & foremost, Australia was a penal colony, whilst in New Zealand English settlers came of their own volition.
Didn't thy send the well b.havd Aussie crims to New Zealand ???
@@TeMana-vy5qu no, they did not. About 500 escaped the hard labour camps etc & came to New Zealand.
Thank you, this was helpful to an extent. I do feel that the wording of "Maori Interpreted the treaty as..." may not be the best wording, as it was more of a translation error, particularly since the idea of a singular leader for all of the land was an alien idea to Maori at that point in time.
This is NO ambiguity when it come to the treaty. It explains very clearly what the 500 Maori Chiefs ceded FOREVER their chiefly authorities to Queen Victoria.
Each chief had the power of life & death. They were able to kill or to enslave at his will. To cannibalise the enemy tribes.
Ok so my question is can we have our land back now? Because what I witnessed was flat out theft and corruption.
...can you explain what happened to the aborigines of NZ?
nah dude its OUR land now, what happened back then was pretty bad with theft and land wars etc, but no one is alive anymore who actually killed anyone or stole any land. Nz Europeans need to accept what happened in the past was wrong, but I'm just as much a New Zealander as you now
Does the Maori part of your ancestry get their land and the European part of your ancestry have to go home? There are very few, if any, full blood Maori.
Injustices happen but giving the land back is never going to happen.
@@deanosumo where are you getting these stats from, ive got family that practice segregation from pakeha and only marry within maori people or other polynesians. dont quote some white dude to, otherwise ill quote my maori uncle
@@Mumbo_Jumbo_Kiwi.1 which ones, the ones your european freinds say were white people, the same ones we have in our oral tradition? or are you talking about Kupe who was the first maori to arrive in NZ
what is the treaty of waitangi
it is a free day off for kiwis, that's it
how do people know this stuff?????????
save the Maori??? No mate we had already conducted business with the French catholic missionaries. at this point we were going to sign with whomever brought us the treaty first. thats why they rushed the document making a momentous mistake in doing so.
New Zealand.
When we are talking about nativity … and about all these other derivatives of that word native, Maori or Aboriginal for example, ... all those other connotations of the PERSON … are referring to the nativity of the birth of the person. NATIVITY OF THE PERSON native Maori Native
Lmfao the Brits outlawed slavery before they even rocked upto NZ.
At this time the early inhabitiants were called natives or aborigines.
They did not have a name for themselves, other than than tribes!
We Tangata whenua signed Te tiriti ō Waitangi not the treaty of Waitangi.

While traveling through New zealand in January 2023 I stopped in Waitangi. A really really fat maori woman walked up to me and gave me a piece of paper. On it was written "wirp the nirp. girp the chirp. wirpy nirp girp girp chirp." Then she walked away. It was really wierd. Can anyone tell me what that was all about?

Early maori economy was replaced by others after murderous invasions the treaty of Waitangi is owned by maori and the crown taking it away would be theft but who would want to take it away and why group's of people that are not involved with the treaty
