Reaching agreement on the meaning and ‘spirit’ of the Treaty of Waitangi - New Zealand’s founding document - has led to fierce debate and violent conflict between European settlers and Maoris since its signing in 1840 until the present day. This documentary style program looks at events leading up to the signing, consequences of the signing, the key points of difference in the two versions of the treaty, the treaty in the twentieth century, and the founding of the Waitangi Tribunal.

You should've gone to speak with the kuia of my tribe...which incidentally did not sign the treaty and were therefore hunted down and murdered or taken in chains to the caves under Dundein where
they died. Women and kids starved to death in the dark and the youth and men were taken out daily to build by hand all those beautiful stone walls and buildings you see scattered around Otago.
Mind you, you no doubt would have failed intentionally you wrote an honest account.

    The Treaty of Waitangi
    Dear Sir,
Thankyou for the info on the Treaty of Waitangi. This document is unique in its identity as it is enacted in NewZealand ,a Pacific nation, even in the current and holds content in the transactions in land with the European arrivals as far back as the mid 1800s. The questions are in the conditions for land use and the land use practices for agriculture.
Wish the Treaty of Waitangi to be with us into the future.
    Greetings.

Thank you, this was helpful to an extent. I do feel that the wording of "Maori Interpreted the treaty as..." may not be the best wording, as it was more of a translation error, particularly since the idea of a singular leader for all of the land was an alien idea to Maori at that point in time.
