Love this guy. He can naturally act like he's had a couple of shots without having them! What a cool guy
He doesn’t know how to turn it off. 😂
Not a snobby classical guy, he got spunk. He reminds me of an old school rocker that is unapologetically himself.
It was stated in a past video that both of these guys are in recovery. @@Ventryx
@@Greatmeasures Probably has ADHD
@@flibflob2785 As someone who has it I can tell he probably does
"Harlequin Forest" would be a great choice next, great mix of harsh and soft parts in that song. "Deliverance" is also an epic track.
Yep, you've taken words from my mind and typed them.
That's always the best introduction to Opeth imo, because it's both one of their best songs and also pretty accessible. (Harlequin Forest that is, not Deliverance - stay away from Deliverance for a while).
Please do it
I agree Ghost Reveries is such an incredible album. Probably my favourite Opeth album honestly. Hours Of Wealth & Isolation Years are also two very beautiful songs that you guys should react too!
Yes! 💯
Mikael Åkerfeldt is a brilliant songwriter. Amusingly, he's talked about how party of why he writes such long songs is he just doesn't know how to write short songs.
One of the things I love about Opeth's songs is that they both stay in each section long enough to really feel it, but also evolve the piece as the song progresses, bringing you on a musical journey.
God I love the organ solo in this piece.
Opeth was a good choice. I hope you react to more of their music.
Definitely! I’m excited for him to hear more. 🤘
@@Greatmeasuresbut he is the genius. Let him decide.
@@Greatmeasureshope leaves pleeeeass with love from Morocco
That was enjoyable!
More from this band please!
Song choice was spot on as an introduction 🖖
Thank you! 🤘
Your piano playing and ability to hear something and mimick it is phenomenal! Where can I hear more of you play?!
Love his piano playing.
One of my favorites thus far!
I had the pleasure of seeing Opeth around 2008. Such nice guys too, signed my Blackwater Park shirt before I even had the chance to ask 😊
The guitar lead work is shared between Mikael and Fredrik who's been in the band since about 2007
Nice job so far getting him into Metal culture, not just brutality and speed per se, but instead showing him the wide variety of tastes that different Metal genres can have. I'd really like you to show him Textures - Awake, it's usually an underrated band and barely nobody reacts to it. Cheers from Spain guys!
Thank you! I didn’t want to overwhelm him with chaos in the beginning. We’ll be sure to put Awake on the list! 🤘
I like this journey the 2 of you are taking. This coming from someone who used to play exclusively classical piano and then got a metal head boyfriend (now husband, 25 year and counting). So I went through this kind of myself, being blown away with some of the musicality involved with metal music. I was always told by my family that metal was just noise and not musical - boy, were they wrong. I appreciate both.
Thank you! Glad to have you along for the journey!
Please do more Opeth! You can't go wrong with them!! Also fun fact about this song, the ending where the guitar goes out of tune, Mikael the lead singer de tuned the other guitar while recording, hence the "hahaha" at the end is him laughing 😂
So cool! 🤘
As a swede, im blown away to see this. Absoluteley love it!
I'm a swede too. I love Opeth's music.
You guys have a hysterical chemistry. Loving the channel.
Thank you!
My favorite band. And WOW. No words, just be here.
btw Next Opeth song has to be 'A Fair Judgement', from Deliverance album, it has everything you could ask from Opeth best era.
Been loving these vids😊😊
Haha was good seeing him getting mind blown away !!
This man is ready for a Prog Metal dig
Fantastic reaction. You have a great friend, and so does he!
Everyone needs a friend like him in their lives..what a wholesome guy! Also I suggest you react to "Eternal Rains Will Come" , one of my favorite songs!
Watershed was the first Opeth album that I listened to. To describe their sound is like hearing the prog band Camel jamming with Morbid Angel, but thats just my take on it. Love this band. Please cover more of their music.
wow. that piano at the end. So beautiful!
Some more suggestions by Opeth (only clean vocals):
Isolation years
Face of Melinda
Hope Leaves
Benighted
Lovelorn Crime
A fair judgement
In my time of need
To bid you farewell
Credence
To rid the disease
Cusp of eternity
All things will pass
Death whispered a lullaby
Sorceress
Harvest

Moon above, Sun Below
Next of Kin
Heart in Hand
Coil
Closure
Porcelain heart
Eternal rain will come
Ghost of perdition?
@@m.rraghav817not just clean vocals.
Benighted or Sorceress should be next.
@@m.rraghav817 not pure clean vocals, he won't be comfortable with harsh vocals
You guys are so funny, as a musician/multi-instrumentalist that loves bands like Tool and Opeth (my favs actually), thank you for reacting to these pieces. I wont bother if more criticism could be added into the reaction or a deeper musical theory analysis. From Opeth I would like to suggest Ghost of Perdition, Drapery Falls, Face of Melinda, and for a new band I would say The Mars Volta song L' Via l'Viaquez.
I really love your videos, I'll be your follower for the rest of my days!
Thank you!
Tool and opeth are #1 and #2. Also a multi instrumentalist, although that's a stretch as it's only been 4 years (bass and guitar).
Another great video!!
Thank you! 🤘
This is my favorite Opeth song. Thanks for reviewing it. ❤ I would suggest Old Heart Falls from Katatonia. I adore them too.
Steven Wilson would be a great choice. Even Porcupine Tree in that regard. Plenty of options to pick.
From Steven Wilson, I would suggest Drive Home, just to get familiar.
From Porcupine Tree, being a bit more into the Heavy Progressive stuff I would recommend Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.
I just know these guys are gonna blow up. they are pulling in crazy views. i see them hitting 10k subs soon
Thanks for the encouragement! We’re still trying to find our way, but we’re having a blast doing it! 🤘
@@Greatmeasures nice! came across the orion video this morning while eating breakfast! love it.
Man I just got hip to your channel a few days ago. I love what you’re doing! I’ve seen a bunch of folks review or react to Opeth, but I’ve never seen anyone mess with a song called Face of Melinda. It’s real chill and kind of jazzy, and I’d love to hear Judson’s take on some of those weird chords and harmonies going on there. Cheers!
That’s the next Opeth song we’re doing. 🤘
@@Greatmeasures Yes!!
That piano at the end sounds so beautiful
Wow the best and meaningful reaction and analysis for a song on youtube.
Normally I would say that Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (live at Redrocks) is a good intruduction. Not that its necessarily their best song (there's no such thing), but its one of those dynamic songs that shows what Opeth can be.
Agreed. Ghost of Perd gives a good flavour of the Opeth sound.
i'm really not a fan of the harsh vocals at the red rocks live album, that being said, this dude isn't really looking for top quality growls
Fuck man this was emotional, freaking love Opeth so much.
I was singing along with a tear in my eye.
Reverie-Harlequin Forest is a must song for Judson ❤
Yes someone else said it has that 80s feel, very retro. Beautiful song. As the next selection, going with the theme of easing in, I would suggest Moon above sun below, or face of Melinda
Honestly, a reaction to this entire album would really showcase the wide range of music Opeth is capable of. Watershed is peak Opeth. Every song is amazing.
i love that every opeth fan has been like, jus listen to the whle album lol. cuz, we know ha. they did face of melinda the most recent and itd be so dope to start off with the moor. still life and ghost reveries would be best for sure
The slayer "south of heaven" video popped up in the feed. After watching it and immediately falling in love with this channel I had to find out if there were any opeth reactions. Well I'll be damned! Please do more golden Era opeth, aka early to mid career.
Will do! 🤘
Great recall to the piece by Schubert, damn!
Wow I never realized the ending was similar to Schubert's Serenade! No wonder I liked both.
I would go with Coil or Harvest next.
Coil without Heir Apparent is practically sacrilegious, but he's not ready for that yet.
Came across your channel by accident.
Saw the Grave shirt.
Automatically subbed.
😂😂 Thank you!
Great song. Just beautiful.
“I know you’re just going to break my heart later”, probably.
Must be great to be so musically gifted im happy to see this and want to see more.
The park. Im dead
YYZ by Rush among many others absolutely NEEDS to be aired.
Very well done song, the classic guitar threw me on the back
I love this ending, masterpiece 😂😂
My favorite band
I'm waiting, I'm waiting for other Opeth songs, really
You have to get your classical buddy onto some Nevermore! This Godless Endeavour would be a good start. They were always criminally underrated in my eyes.
You guys crack me up...
in my opinion the best gateway song to their growly side will be 'Bleak '. from the very first chord, can't go wrong
I love almost everything by Opeth, it's mandatory during my walks in our dark Swedish autumns here. But with the outro, with the guitar slowly going out of tune, is such a great touch, such a great way of ending a song.
A lesser known song by Opeth, Hours of Wealth, would by my request.
Awesome guys ! I think it was a good choice for the first reaction
I was curious what his take would be on the verses because they have some pretty wild chord changes, I think it got a bit lost in everything, though. Thankfully they do stuff like that a lot in their songs.
13:46 omg, I've been looking for some kind of clue about what connects the Succession theme, the Rick and Morty sad theme, Furious Angels from the Matrix soundtrack and Opeth's Faith In Others' intro. So I gotta look into Schubert :D
'Drip Drip Drip' by Holy Molars please! Really curious what another classical musicians thoughts on it would be.
Dude knows his tunes on the Piano!👌 Your mind is skilled within hearing some seconds or short melodies there. Very impressed tho, respect 🤟
I wish I had this talent too. Pure musical soul 😊
A Fair Judgement
Deliverance 🤘
Masterpiece
Throw him in the deep end with Hessian Peel, its beautiful and brutal at the same time. I think it would be very interesting, lot of dissonance, plenty of clean vocals, strings, and some of my favorite Opeth guitar riffs.
Seeing people react to the ending of Burden is always a joy :D
A Grave T-shirt. Amen from Sweden.🙏🙏🙏
Nothing strange about the letter Å or even å. It is pronounced as you would pronounce the two letters au in let´s say "fauna". We just invented a letter for that sound.
15:30 i wish this was a full acoustic piano version! wowww
There is! Look up Nikola Cvetkovic, he’s done a lot of piano covers of Opeth (including Burden) and other bands
Ooh! What a lovely quirky person. Loving this immediately.
If we wanna keep on this path, maybe Hours of Wealth would be a great choice for the next reaction before we get to the guturals and Ghost of Perdition (LIVE PLEASE) ones!
Great reaction
Dude, im digging that Grave tshirt!!
🤘
This shit is wild!!!! Feel like I'm in a parallel universe...LOVE IT!!!
I would like to challenge your friend with "Master's Apprentices" from the Deliverence album. It's challenging to follow for its own sake. The song changes chords only twice, only to go back to the first one. If you're only judging a song by chords, you'll underrate this one. Yet, rhythmwise, constructionally, and lyrically, t's a completely inspiring experience.
The face he makes when they intentionally f*** up a beautiful song by gradually de-tuning was golden.
He definitely needs to hear 'Silhouette' at some point!
The two of you are the only "reactors" that I watch because I actually appreciate your reactions and not just the song you are reacting to. Judson's immediate piano take on "Cemetery Gates" was incredible.
Thank you for the kind words and for hanging out with us!
Bro, your tshirts , you're killing me, GRAVE? Monsters of Swedish Death Metal ??? Bloody Nora, while listening to Opeth!
Judson's words of wisdom, "Those four chords, i could just sway my life away"
first video, fell in love with the channel. Thanks guys
Anyone else opposed to a reaction of the studio version of Rush "Xanadu"... Or the live version from "Exit Stage Left"?... Either one, Both are amazing!!
You will not find me opposed to anything by Rush, ever.
We’re planning to do some Rush soon. I’m trying to find what he already knows from them.
Lmao! This was amazing! He needs to check out more opeth
I think it would be very fun to go Coil straight into Heir Apparent. He can see how diverse this band is.
Beauty and the beast…
my first was Blackwater park - changed my life
Faith In Others would another gentle but powerful introduction
It's amazing what you can do with four chords. From Schubert to Opeth, to Metallica, to Celine Dion 😆🤩
Dope Grave shirt👌🤘
🤘
What a cool guy.
You should show him In cauda venenum and heritage!
Yyeeaahh!!! Thanks gentlemen.
What genre is opeth...they're Opeth genre.
Please do Harlequin Forest.
However, there are a lot of great choices and I think you chose well for first impressions.
Thank you! We’ll be doing more soon. 🤘
First time in the channel and I love it. I take it Judson is not a fan of DeathMetal vocals and you’re trying to ease him into Opeth.
Honestly, I wouldn’t show him clean vocals set lists only. I think after this you introduce him to current ProgRock Opeth, something like “Strange Brew” or “Moon Above Sun Below” and then to their Death era with the classics from still life like “Godhead’s Lament”.
I went back to your community vote on Opeth and saw “To Bid You Farewell” is on their, one of my absolute favorite songs, it’s not the most technical song out there so I’m interested how someone who is musically inclined will review it.
Comment is getting long enough, but I really enjoy his Piano translations of the song. A pianist friend of mine played over Opeth’s “The Drapery Falls” intro and it was the most magical sound I’ve heard, I would be greatly appreciative to hear Judson take on it. Thank you!
Thank you! Glad to have you along for the ride. Hoping to hear more Opeth soon.
Grave - Into the Grave
Honestly probably one of my favorite records, it changed my life
My theory with Watershed is that, even if the band didn't really know it, the songwriting was about to change, moving into the prog rock stuff they do now, as basically every track on the album has a sudden idea and tone change, establishing itself just in time for it fade away and let the old tones take back over. I know Mikhael says he started writing Heritage as another death metal album so I don't think the change was foreseen, but the fact that there are so many rapid and sudden changes on Watershed make me think there was a deeper feeling in the studio for that album, something that was rising but not realized yet.
Anyways, if you're into the idea of some more Opeth-likes, I HAVE to suggest Wilderun. They had one of my favourite albums from last year called "Epigone" but their crowning achievement thus far is their album "Veil of Imagination". That whole thing is a masterpiece. The tracks to check out from them are "The Unimaginable Zero Summer", "Woolgatherer" and "Far from Where Dreams Unfurl".
I feel like he was digging the mellotron solo but forgot to comment on it :( still loved the video!
his laugh in 16.44 in x1,5 sounds like the laugh at the end of the song!!
gotta do Heir Apparent
or Lotus Eater
Or even better... do 'Coil' straight into Her Apparent, without pausing :D
I’d like to request La Mer by Nine Inch Nails it’s truly an amazing instrumental
I would love to see your guys reaction to a band (Beyond creation) song (earthborn evolution) they are a technical death, or tech deathcore band. probably within the top 3 most talented group of musicians and composing i've see and heard! as a lifelong musician originally a classically trained pianist turned metalhead you will not regret it and be left speechless!
I love Beyond Creation. We’ll drop them on him at some point. Don’t want to overwhelm him too much in the beginning.
I love he said "Does Opeth have anything to do with Kenny G?" There is a photo circulating from 15 years back of Kenny G with his son at an Opeth concert!
I’m late (per usual) but I’m all on board with this new dynamic duo of the music reaction world, y’all are a damn hoot, and the OPETH rabbit hole is opening……
Mikael wasn’t an original member, but he’s been the brainchild and principal writer of this outfit from the very first song! He has no classical training, doesn’t read music, not even lessons on guitar, but he is a most voracious student and collector and historian of rock music in most all of its forms, especially progressive music!
Now, just go anywhere you want to go from here with his discography, there’s likely nothing you couldn’t appreciate(.)
Welcome aboard! Thanks for the Opeth info!
@@Greatmeasures Wow! I really wasn’t expecting a response, but thanks, and I’m looking forward to more from the two of you. It’s quite interesting, refreshing, and unique(.) 🤘🏼
"We're gonna ease you into it" - gives him Blackwater park as the next one! xD
I could just listen to you play Opeth songs on the piano all day long….
Yes! More prog!!
Always thought opeth could do a killer reimagining of Jeff Wayne's war of the world's album.
Please listen to something from Katatonia's album 'Night Is the New Day' or from 'Dead End Kings'
Do some more Opeth that was sweet.
That would be a fkg amazing show. Kenny G opens for Opeth. I'll buy tickets right now.
We need to make this happen.
