Many young K-pop artists are influenced by the style and movement concepts of a young man named Kiel Tutin from UK via New Zealand who has been influencing dance and movement globally. He has worked heavily in the Asian music industry, MVs & film with artists such as 2NE1, Big Bang, 4Minute, Kris Wu Yi Fan and is the head choreographer for Taiwanese superstar Jolin Tsai. I think modern dancers get together and say it should be hip hop,... but we want it to look like the way he (Tutin) is moving. There are other influences on what you see happening in K-pop MVs too many to go into. Such as when Lisa walks into/past the camera making gestures or in full eye contact. The language is different from a camera zoom into her than her charging the camera. It's not a HEY! we're bringing you closer. It's a hey! I'mma walk outta this scene, I'm leaving.
Another thing to consider about Lilifilms is a sneak attack by Lisa. As you might guess, YG has exclusive contracts with each performer on doing anything performance related. It all has to be OK'd by the company. They are under contract. So testing the "can I have my own Twitter account (where I might perform), can I have my own instagram (where I might perform)", can I start my own RUclips channel? (where I WILL perform). Saying yes to VLive content opens the door to "can I do some dance performances?" which turn into bigger and bigger production numbers progressively. The last one being practically a short form dance movie. When these things started coming out, trust me!!! They hit like a hammer!! around the world! It was Lisa announcing to the world, I am a FORCE!!! I am a LEAD PLAYER!!,... just in movement alone. Rose' does it everytime she opens her vocal chords. When you see Rose' singing in some studio with a guitarist? These girls are still only in their mid-20s. They are bosses.
Her performance on every level is just so strong. The look she places (correct for photo modeling) right at camera lower left is a look of complete confidence and certainty. She knows how a dancer moves to a camera and an audience. It makes her the natural center of any group situation. Her long arms and legs are eccentuated by the broad moves they are doing here. If you look at her as a background dancer in the RINGA LINGA video from pre-Blackpink days, she is a distracting force every time the camera hits her. I don't know if someone told her to take the facemask off, or if she just did it. But it works in her favor definitely. I think all of the background people were supposed to be masked.
Yet another thing you might consider (yes there are many in these performances) is these are KOREAN dancers, Lisa growing up in Thailand, ... doing American hip hop street dancing. I mean, maybe they grew up listening to it. Maybe, they're young enough. What do you think when you see extremely foreign looking perfomers (other K-pop than here) doing VERY american style hip hop & rap and JUST KILLING IT?? Look at the settings they chose. City construction site, city parking garage, rooftops,.. what are you looking at?? What is that telling you? It's in the song lyrics & song style. But also 90s gangsta rap videos. It's harkening back to like a certain look and style. Almost down to what they are wearing,... almost.
