    I totally forgot to comment but like 2-3 months ago i was too scared of even kicking to a wall handstand. With alot of practice i can hold a 10-15 second freestanding handstand and the consistency is increasing more and more! But that is all thanks to this video, very much appreciated. You have unknowingly become a great gift to my calisthenics journey ❤!!

      Do you know about my Handstand Breakthrough Revolution course?

      Visit www.yogathletica.com/hbr if you want to learn more and you can set up a one-on-one call with me to see how I can help you smash ALL your handstand goals! 💥

    A lot of people have that fear of falling over due to the fact that they're not used to being inverted that's why hooping on the supporting foot and using the one extended to touch the wall is a good way to practice I demonstrated this in my tutorial as well like you did,but your tutorial is really in-depth great video!

    This is a good one Shana. I see so many tips for beginner handstand telling them, "simple hop to the wall." I'm finding my students having issue with that portion. I'm sure some is upper body strength but I think most of it is fear of being upside down.

    Two years ago I watched and tried your handstand tutorial and the one with your mother. I still could not. So I gave up. This year I have been taking 5 to 8 yoga classes a week for 6 weeks so far (50% yin and restorative, 50% iyengar and vinyasa flow). I feel much stronger in my wrists, shoulders, core, and arms. For the first time I can finally transition from plant to leaning forward dropping down low slowly with a pause in low plank before getting back to down dog. As a result, I feel a lot more confident trying handstand.

    Dear Shana, thank you so much for these amazing tips and your fantastic energy. I discovered yogathletica a few days ago when looking for a yoga wheel tutorial, and am completely hooked. Your video on hip stretches made a difference of several centimeters towards managing the splits after one go (!). I am already considering a trip to LA...might take a while before I am able to, though, as I live in Austria. Right, I'm going to try the handstand once more, just took a break to comment. Thank you again!!

      well...i have a video that is especially for people who are afraid of handstands. 🙃
      try this: ruclips.net/video/eXCxpTHA3x8/видео.html
      then, when you are ready to move on to kicking up, you can try this one: ruclips.net/video/f0EuwxSkNJM/видео.html
      and i recommend that if you are scared, you can also ask an adult to hold your hips and spot you while you try. that always helps!
      also, start slowly with easy kicks and then you can kick a little higher each time.
      i hope that helps!
      have fun!!!

      unless you do your handstand with your fingertips at the wall (see my oktoberfest handstand drill a day series at ruclips.net/p/PLEk7dn2pk4QVzGy5NCUfHNjRYryatt6Xf ), working at the wall always means a backbend. this video is for beginners having trouble getting to the wall. my handstand mania playlist (ruclips.net/p/PLEk7dn2pk4QWlT2x6f6Sxejxc3boJnrvg ) has more advanced handstand work to get you out of the backbend and off the wall. :)

    This is really useful. I’ve just started a handstands programme as part of calisthenics training and find the wall kick-up way more difficult than it should be!
    Couple of Qs for you. Do you ‘kick up’ with the lever leg or the foot that’s on the floor? Also, how do you stack your hips if you don’t have anywhere near the hamstring flexibility you have? :)

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  2 года назад

      So glad to help and those are great questions.
      The answer is you kick with the foot on the floor, but pull up with the leg that's in the air.
      As to stacking your hips... ruclips.net/video/uWRI6PALbAc/видео.html
      Honestly, you have the answer in the question. There is no shortcut for hamstring flexibility. You have to stretch those hams and it will help your handstand immensely!
      I have a very comprehensive handstand tutorial playlist at ruclips.net/video/NmdoH4pv_FI/видео.html
      I recommend you use those videos in conjunction with this one.
      Also, handstand is very much the culmination of all aspects of the yoga practice put together. If you don't already have a full yoga practice, you may want to consider signing up for my Vimeo channel of full-length classes at vimeo.com/ondemand/yogathletica
      Guaranteed to take you to the next level!

    • @hughmunro2467
      @hughmunro2467 2 года назад +1

      @@YOGAthletica thanks very much. I’ve always left pure stretching alone as I’d rather spend the time doing running or strength work but I can tell mobility is so key for calisthenics. I’m 39 now though so do you think it’s genuinely possible to improve flexibility without needing to dedicate hours every week to it, which I’ll never do?

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  2 года назад

      @@hughmunro2467 I appreciate your honesty! I was an intense athlete and started yoga just before my 30th birthday. In the beginning I did one class a week and I already saw a big difference. So, I do think it is possible. But, like everything else, the more you put in, the more you get out. I recommend stretching after every run, at least. And handstands can still be done without flexibility! But flexibility will sure make it easier.
      If you are interested, I have a runner's stretch video on Vimeo, vimeo.com/ondemand/yogathletica/169169826
      It's an hour long, but maybe you can dedicate once a week and then also use a few of the stretches for at least a few breaths each after a run. I shot it with a not-very-bendy but definitely very athletic friend of mine. So, you can see both how it looks on my body and on his. :)

    • @hughmunro2467
      @hughmunro2467 2 года назад +1

      @@YOGAthletica just realised I forgot to say thanks :)
      I’ve decided to dedicate a bit more time to mobility. I just filmed myself doing some of your handstand drills (Oktoberfest) and my legs are getting to about 100 degrees when doing a wall walk whereas you’re almost in a split position. Do you have any stretch playlists or programs that could help me work toward that kind of split, knowing I’m likely gonna do 1/2 sessions max per week? I’m not sure if I need to work on hamstring and hip mobility or more hamstrings? Or would you still suggest the Vimeo course you highlighted last time? Thanks again.

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  2 года назад

      @@hughmunro2467 Thanks for circling back! I recommend the Vimeo because they are full-length classes, which means each class touches everything you need to work on to master handstand, splits, or anything else you are working on. I was told one should master headstand first but I have a neck issue and seem to always end being hurt with headstand, even half ones...even under my teacher supervision meaning I do not make a technical mistake. So I have skipped headstand (which I mastered "ok" until I seriously hurt my neck practicing alone against a wall, and was unable to move my neck for a month). It is all back to normal since months now but I have never wanted to try headstands again. Just curious if you have time, about your advise.

    Hi! Im scared to do handstands.. Im a kid and i can hold it for like 1 second but then i land down fast beacuse im too scared i will fall backwards. When i was 5 i was good at handstands and i could do handstands to bridge and stuff just randomly (Im naturally flexible) but since i got older i did them and once i was standing in the handstand, i hold it for about 5 seconds and then i fell on my leg. It was horrible! I dont know what happen but i couldnt walk (when i tryed i would just fall) and i couldnt put my feet down to the floor..But the camp teachers were mean and they tought im lying so i can get home.. When it was lunch time the teacher litterally pushed me so i will walk faster beacuse i was just jumping on the left leg and couldnt walk. It was like that for a week... Ill never visit that camp again 😂😂 Now handstands are my biggest fear.. Sorry i litterally just told you and everyone what happen but i could make it short by just saying they are my fear 😂Any tips to land safe? Thanks for the video tho! Ur amazing!

Once you are all the way comfortable at the wall, you can start moving off the wall. Do you have a parent who can help you and make sure you don’t flip over? I do have other videos to help you get off the wall. You want to be brave, but you also need to be smart so you don’t hurt yourself. Maybe check out my “Handstand like a pro freestanding in the middle of the room” video. Start with very small hops so you can’t flip. Then make them bigger as you find your balance and control. And if you accidentally flip over, don’t flip out. Stay calm, bend your legs, arch your spine, look up like crazy, and press into your fingertips to slow the fall. Hope that helps!
