    It’s clear that the root system is way too small for the original pot. From what I’ve learned cactus love to be tight and root bound. If the pot is too big the water may not properly get to the root system even if it looks like it’s been watered. I’ve actually noticed this with most plants.

      Yep. If you look at the size of the plant pot saucer he placed it in to get the roots wet, that's closer to the pot size he needed in circumference. A ceramic pot just a bit bigger than that would have the plant thriving.

    I've had my prickly pear cactus for about 6 months now and its' new growth has been doing great. I noticed it tends to do this wrinkling and drooping thing when it's in need of water, which is about every 3-4 weeks in winter and 1-2 weeks in summer (in plastic pot). Maybe next time you see it do this, you don't need to panic and repot it, just water it and keep in mind that it will dry out slower in a plastic pot than in a terracotta one.

    Hi, Maria. I see one problem. After you break or cut the cactus leaves off the plant, you should let the open wound where you broke it heal over for a few days to a week in a warm dry place, but not in the direct sun, before you plant them in dirt. It is like getting a scab to cover an open wound. The plant can get an infection from the soil. You wouldn't rub a cut on your finger in the dirt, would you? Make sure the wound has sealed over and dried before you plant them.Hope it helps.

      ON this plant, never had a problem, I will make an update on it soon, it has grown nicely, I deal with the opuntias for 30 years and never ran into problems, just under watered it

      TX, Maria. I was thinking of new viewers who may not have planted any kind of cactus before. Also, at the end of this video you mentioned callousing it, but some new people might not know why it matters to do it. Yes, your kind of cactus look beautiful and seem to be doing so well.

    Maria, will you plant these outdoors in the ground when they are more mature ?

  • @panosadamop

    Very nice to see your plant rejuvenating..!
    I was given today a mature opuntia giant cutting (there are more than 20 ears on it), it weights about 20-25 kilos, and I consider planting it as it is..!
    I'm worried about wich way i could securely plant it directly - after callusing - in the earth, i mean supporting it's weight until it makes strong roots..
    SO.. My major concern is "Can i bury the whole lowest ear of the cutting, or may be the two lowest ones (so as to support more of its weight), without the possibility of rotting..?
    I hope i made myself understood (my poor English)...
    Thanks

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  5 лет назад +2

      each ear pad has little dots were the thorns are, and that's were sometimes root come out of, Or sometime it comes out from the bottom, don't put it in too deep, and the only way it rots, is when you give it too much water, they are dry plants

    Hi Maria. Plastic and clay pots hold more moisture than terracotta pots because terracotta has pores . And opuntias wrinkle when is in dormant. So no worries. :) Is it snows?

One of my plants is getting to tall i dont mind it but i noticed the leaves were getting smaller. So i decided its time to cut her back. I believe it's too top heavy it keeps falling over. Tfs

      Don't water often, all depends if it's too hot, otherwise they do not like wet feet. Here it's winter and i water once a month

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  Год назад +1

      Just lightly water, since there small, they do need often, once there big, then they don’t need to be watered often.

    I have an opuntia snow cactus. It was outside all summer and thrived. I put it inside our sun room to winter and it has started to fall over and some of the tips and growths have just fallen off. Should I include a photo (somehow?) Not sure whether it has a disease or needs more water?

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  4 года назад

      check if it has any milly bugs or spider mites, they are very tiny, also phabits, leave a sticky residue, other wise too much watering, They like dry feet, NOT wet

    Do we need to let the cactus heal over before planting, I heard someone say it will rot if I don't I need to transplant ours before it gets to big it grew on its own next to rose bushes. Thanks

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  4 года назад +1

      How often do you water? We had to move ours they were starting to get too big in front of the roses, so far they are doing well, they are about three years old. We hope to be able to get fruits to make jam and syrup. Thanks for the video. Do you water yours to settle the dirt a little bit and just leave til rooted or just place them in dry soil, how long does it take til they get roots? The ones we transplanted had really long roots so those will be good.

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  4 года назад

      @@samanthanicholson9015 I DON'T WATER, FOR 24 HOURS, AFTER THAT I WATER AROUND, JUST A LITTLE BIT, SO THE WATER DOESN'T TOUCH THE PLANT, ONLY TO MOISTEN THE SOIL, THEN I DON'T WATER TILL 2 WEEKS, AND AGAIN I WATER AROUND, SO IF THERE IS ANY ROOTS, THE ROOTS WILL SEARCH OR STRETCH FOR THE WATER, ITSELF, THAT WAY THERE IS NO OVER WATERING. THEY ARE DRY PLANTS, THAT'S WHY

    I’m trying to figure out why my prickly pear hasn’t bloomed, got a start from my mom and it’s been 3 years, not one single bloom, mine is in a plastic pot, gets plenty of full sun. My sister got a start from the same plant & hers has bloomed the last two years, hers is in the ground near her brick house. She even says she never fertilizes it. Could you possibly know what’s going on with mine not blooming?

    • @mariasplants
      @mariasplants  4 года назад

      All depends on the temperature of your home, or if it's winter time or summer. For me it took 6 weeks, I actually will upload a video on one of my cactus that fail on the floor and i decided to put the broken ones in a different pot, and it took 4 weeks, because now it's warmer.
