The Fisting Firemen series has gone to shit ever since part 5. They always try to one up themselves which has been hard to do since they put those elephants in part 5.
Since you are flying thru episodes so fast you should know, Season 3 Episodes 7, 8 & 9 are collectively known as the "Meteor Shower Trilogy", they are not a true Trilogy though because the events of each episode are happening at the same time, each episode takes place on the same night in universe, but they should be watched in sequence.
My absolute favorite part of this episode is Tolkien...the first time when he watches the tape and comes back out and says "I'm out...I don't know what I saw, I don't want to know...I'm out," and when the parents are interrogating him, he casually brings up the difference between making l0ve and...whatever he just watched. 😂😂
Just the memory of getting a video from Civic Video (Australia's former Video store chain) and sitting in the family room to watch it is such a hit of nostalgia.

So this episode does have a fair amount of context to it. First it was produced at roughly around the same time as the death camp of Tolerance which as you know did have a fair amount of references to The Hobbit film done by Rankin and bass. This one was made just before the release of the two towers into theaters but after Fellowship had already come out and hit DVD( both the theatrical and the extended edition which is the one that Clyde references). I will say that the enjoyment of this episode does increase if you have actually watched the Peter Jackson version of Lord of the Rings. And yes that does mean that the first Harry Potter film had already released and the second one was either just coming out or was going to be coming out shortly after this aired. They followed up in the theme of The Rankin and bass versions of Tolkien with a direct sequel more or less to the Lemmiwinks story in Death camp( I think that is in season 13 and the episode is called bass to mouth). This is essentially the same wizard outfit that Cartman uses in the Black Friday Trilogy which then is the direct preamble to stick of truth(and subsequently the forthcoming Snow Day). On top of that the Ralph bakshi version of The Lord of the Rings that was released in 1977 was the inspiration for the art style used in the opening cinematic of stick of truth. So clearly Matt and Trey are huge fans of the works of Tolkien. Butters as Gollum as well as the men of South Park knowing about BDS 9 are probably the best parts about this episode aside from the generalized parody itself. You are not alone in your having read the Lord of the Rings trilogy yet not actually seen the films as there is a good portion of people who have never seen those particular films be it whether or not they are fans of the book or not.

I suck at reading but I listened to all the Harry Potter audio books. It took a while to find a good narrator for all of them. I couldn't listen to Stephen Fry because he sounded like he was eating spaghetti as he was reading. I can't stand listening to smacking wet lips. Comuter voice sounded better. Half Blood Prince was my favorite book to sleep to for a while.

This parody made more sense than the actual Lord of the Rings. The parents' cars played the role of the eagles, but this time they actually had a legitimate reason for not driving the fellowship towards the video store, only away from it. They could have driven the kids to the video store, but they were wrapped up in a series of miscommunications. What was Gandalf's excuse for not summoning eagles to fly Frodo straight to Mount Doom?

He probably thought, "oh well, it's worth it to destroy this evil ring," until he found out that the eagles could have made that task so much easier and less deadly.
