Phil Ehart is one of the best drummers of his time and least appreciated. Great poly-rhythms. He and Phil Collins were kind of overlooked by those in the drum/music industry. Phil Ehart also inspired me for the drumming I do today. Rock on Phil.
I've played drums almost 40 years. I say he's one of the greatest rock drummers ever.
Along with John Weathers from Gentle Giant and Phil Collins. They are the top 3 underrated drummers. All people talk is Bonham from this era.

@@liams706 Bonham was ok. Yes, he had groove and could play, but there were many drummers that were better than him. Everybody hypes up Bonham and he says he was the best drummer ever. Personally I don’t agree. Even Bonham said that he used to put on Genesis songs for his son to practice. Just goes to show how good Phil Collins was. But, again there’s many better than Bonham. Ehart, Neil Peart, Bill Bruford (sadly doesn’t play anymore), Simon Phillips, and so on.
Always such a musical drummer. Wouldn’t be Kansas without him 👍
I love Phil Ehart. A maniac on the drums. And Kerry Livgren - an outstanding prog composer, orchestrator, lyricist, and multi instrumentalist. Kerry is phenomenal!
Maybe the most underrated drummer in history
I was blown away by his solo at a show back in the early 80s in Tucson (TCC), man is amazing.
I saw this version of Kansas in 82 at Astroworld. John Elefante was a perfect replacement for Steve Walsh. John's voice was terrific.

phil EHART is a musical genius on the percussion drums,his expertise is right up there with BILL WARD,GINGER BAKER,BONHAM, and the rest of the amazing drummers that have entertained us over the years,i really like DON BREWER of GRAND FUNK,BUT MAN THEY ARE ALL GOOD, but I'm a stringed player and RICH WILLIAMS walks on water when on the neck of a guitar,he is a scientific player,knows what he is doing,when you play opposite KERRY LIVGREN YOU HAD BETTER BE
I saw them in the mid-90's, minus Phil on drums, and Steve up front....amazing. Or heavily drugged. Either way, in a small club that was a former firehouse.
My g/f had a older sister who dated one of the earlier members from way back...which somehow gave us access to the tour bus, before and after the show. Well folks, even then....IT WASN'T WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. No parties. No groupies. More likely..."after work", Relief. Theirs. For me...a GREAT show/experience.
Saw them (twice) around the same time, in a small club in San Diego. We had tickets to the first show. Phil was drumming, Steve Morse was playing, and Steve Walsh was, well... "on fire." Headstands on the keyboards kind of fire.
Afterward, we just kind of hung out outside, before the drive home. The band came out to go rest in their bus between shows, and we told them it was a nice show. Phil came over to talk to a woman near us, and it turned out it was his mother. We talked to her a bit after he left, and my buddy made her night by asking her for her autograph. She thought that was funny.
Anyway, the bouncer sees all this, and comes over and asks us if we'd like to see the 2nd show, too. Of course we did. I still have the pictures we took, the ticket Phil signed for me, and one of his trashed sticks from that night.
You're right- it WAS a great show/experience.
If there was ever a drummer who always played for the song it is Phil Ehart!!! Such tasteful, creative parts which truly served the music. He’s also one of the nicest, most humble people you could ever meet. Now, on a more cryptic note: It’s also a testament to what an absolute batshit crazy world we live in that Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, Toto and REO Speedwagon are NOT in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but Jay Z and LL Cool J are. I’m not saying I’d like to punch Jann Wenner in the face, because I would never advocate violence. However, if Jann Wenner threw a punch at me which I easily deflected and punched him in the face in self defense….I could happily live with that. The world needs more Phil Eharts and fewer Jann Wenners.

I'm a HUGE Rush fan and I LOVE Neil's drumming, he is phenomenal, no doubt. But if you think he's the BEST drummer on the planet, you need to widen your horizons. There are drummers out there playing things Neil can only dream about, and I'm sure he would be the first to tell you that! Check out guys like Marco Minneman, Chris Coleman, Mike Mangini, Vinnie Coluaita, just to name a few! However, I think Neil is the BEST drummer for RUSH.
And don't forget to backwards in time. Neil's a huge Buddy Rich fan for good reason. But there are so many amazing drummers, and that takes nothing away from the awesome talent of Neil. Check out Joe Morello, from the Dave Brubeck quartet as well as Gene Kruppa and Louie Belson.
LOL......No ones ever HEARD of any of those other guys......Who's written more hit songs, and sold more records, and has more fans? ?? Not even close dude..........LOL....

I am a Kansas fan, I am a queen fan, I am a fan of most inovative and unusually written music that does not get airplay...However, 1st Steve Waslsh had a more pure voice than John and as far as drums and percussion....HOW ON EARTH can you not make mention that Carl Palmer is the finest drummer to walk the planet? I am amazed. ?Could it be that you never heard him in anything but Lucky Man? I dont know but you are all smart enough to see the genius of Kansas, look live ELP, the invented Prog.

I am a huge Steve Walsh fan but listening to JE now I think I was too critical back then. He does a heck of a job on this song.

I've seen ELP 4 times, and while Carl Palmer is a great drummer, how on Earth can YOU say he's better than Neil Peart? For that matter, how can you say he's better than Danny Carey, or Terry Bozzio, Buddy Rich, and yes, even Phil Ehart? Music is subjective, and we all have our favorites, regardless of the instrument they play.

avs90125 I have to totally disagree with you about Peart Ehardt issue. I was the Biggest Kansas and Rush fan as a teenager. I grew up playing drums and guitar. Although Peart stood out more because he was in a 3 man band and did prolific solos. Phil was working with 5 other awesome musicians who didnt agree on much and did the work of an absolute master at tying them all together. U sound like someone who hasn't listened to the depth of Mysteries and Mayhem as well as many of the older songs. As for Carl Palmer....I liked him but He will tell You Phil was Always The better drummer.
Max Freeman Neil Peart plays the same way on every album,always in show off mode ,there's more to the drums than nutwood drumrolls and random 64th note high hats. One dimensional and way overrated.
Wow, same. I learned drumming and percussion from Phil and Neil at 14 to about 16. The first big show that I went to was in Indianapolis, Kansas, Rush, Bob Seiger and Roadmaster. Neil's kit was full circle and was on a rotating platform. I liked Phil's style a lot more. Both fantastic!

Ewwww Elefante ... he was a low point in Kansas' history for me. But I'm an old fan so I guess it will always be Walsh or nothing for me. Glad he eventually found his way back to the band in the end. Kansas for life!
How would you like to be stuck in a great band like Kansas who has made some incredible music and albums through the years and the only thing people remember is Dust in the Wind and Carry on Wayward Son. You'd be pissed off to. That happens to a lot of great musicians and bands. People suck.
I came to Kansas for those two songs and discovered a library full of wow.

John Weathers, Phil Collins, Phil Ehart. They are all at his level or better. As a musician and drummer of 25 years who's played hundreds of shows, and attended thousands.. Bonham is the McDonalds, the household name for sick drummers. But there are a thousand drummers at his level and even more beyond his level.
Why? The lyrics were just as introspective and uplifting as before, just written from a different point of view.

I'm a Kansas fan, a Queen fan, and an ELP fan, but anybody who thinks there is a better drummer than Neil Peart is smoking crack! That being said, Walsh left Kansas before this album came out, and John Elefante was a decent replacement. Not the same, but he did justice to the Walsh-era tunes he covered. They could have done a lot worse to be sure!
avs90125 you don't need any crack, you bumped your head Neil Peart is a legend in one dimension ,show off mode all the time ,playing nutwood drum rolls and hi-hats, I liked fly by night but rush just kept releasing it with a different name over and over and over, he would have never made it as a studio drummer cuz he can only play one way you want to see a drummer check out Terry Bozzio
