The way I explain it to new students is if they have ever swung a sledge hammer or similar they have used a Kiai or similar. You use it to connect your upper and lower halves.

That is a great example! Any hard labor brings out some type of vocalization

As an instructor it's also a good metric to check someone's mindset. I never had a student who could fake audible intensity, a lame sounding kiai to me indicated someone didn't have their mind in what they were doing.

That’s a great point! You can tell when someone’s mind is wondering when their kiai doesn’t have conviction

In certain Chinese arts, we have specific sounds for specific movements and timing. Which I’ve always found interesting!! Kiai is no joke! It’s serious; has great function and purpose as well as deep spiritual meaning

I read about that for kenjutsu as well for different blocks with the sword

“The way of inhaling is soft and the way of exhaling is hard.” - the Bubishi
    I’m paraphrasing bc I can’t remember exactly.
The other version I’ve heard is like “The whole universe inhales soft and exhales hard”
This is where Miyagi got the name “Goju” for his style. I’m sure you know that already and probably those quotes as well.
Just found your channel. Good stuff. Thanks.

few people truly understand the benefits of this and exhaling . It comes in handy when you're lifting too

Kiya/qiya is also in al-kiyamah reminds me of how sharrukin, or kamehameha is like calling out the essence. Alignment to core self, inner kin.
Interesting to see how many places it appears in.

I Like the explanation of Iain abermrthy. According to him the kiai is the Feeling of great Power when you know your opponent hast No way to defekt you and that you are gonna ko them. Then the Scream is nothing but a result of that Feeling. Like an Explosion that makes a lourd noise but Just screaming alone is Like a Sound without an Explosion
The opponent must be Feeling the opposite which is aiki. A Feeling of Bring completely outmatched and unable to win.
