@Zippy Knowitall It was too much for me also, I was looking for 4.11 or maybe 4.56, but the guy I bought it from said they were 4.11. Well it pulled like crazy, but after the 1/4 mile it had nothing left. I ran it around town in 4th gear like it was in second.
@@looloo6322 I had a Z with headers, factory solid service cam, I think the 3030, strip dominator intake, 4.56 with a very loose converter. It would run 12.70's at 101 over and over again. Pulled like crazy but seemed to run out at the top end. Still not sure what was happening there. I was a kid just trying things with no real experience. Not enough money to make many changes and always scared I'd blow the engine and lose a years budget. Maybe geared too low or ran out of gas? I think the converter was a 5,000 stall. You could sit still and rev it in gear like it was a manual with the clutch in.
These guys that burn off tread to show off confound me. Of course it is his car and they are his tires. I did it too, when I was 16. Had to get another set of tires, so never did it again. As usual, Road Test TV did great! Thank you.
That L78 engine was underrated. Anyone that street raced back then knew those motors were strong runners. They were high revving , quick revving big blocks. Perfect for racing
L78 ... will Dyno close to 425 HP over 450 Torque with factory manifolds over 450 HP with headers an LT1 4 speed can do better than what we see here I think the small block driver lost on the line and was not pushing it too the max , guy was 3 car lengths behind in less than 100 feet snoozing on the line A Yenko Deuce with same engine and a 4 speed with 410 gears can run under 13 seconds at 110 , weighs 3290 Those L78 can be quicker too this was cool to see though , thanks for posting

I like all Camaros from 1st Gen to 6 th gen, but 1970-71 , 69 and 3rd gens, especially IROCs and 91-92 Z28s are my favorite, 5th Gen looks good too, a little of the old vibe.
I owned a numbers matching 1970 SS 396 L-78 with headers and M-21 Close ratio Muncie and 12 bolt Optional 4:10 rear gears and would beat any Z-28 (unless it was modified) I am tried of Z-28 this and Z-28 that. The BB received no respect.

Thats cuz most guys couldn't drive with a big block torque. Blow the tires off at the starting line. 7"-8" wide tire , not the technology compounds like today. I lived those times. I could beet 9 out of 10 big locks , Chevy, Ford's, Mopars with my 67 Chevelle 327 cu. In. 456 gears, 400 turbo. Get them off the line enough they couldn't quite catch me on the top end. 🎉

I may just have to find a 70 roller to put the 4 bolt 396 into. It will be a clone but i want a proper car to drive that engine in. IDK about a "cruiser" or A body with the weight of a car like that, id like it in a chevy II, but a 70 camaro is "period correct" and something smaller than a chevelle/malibu. I just want to see how a 396 solid lifter build can perform outside of straight lines or how useable that power is with the right modern/suspension setup. Or if its too out of hand on an m21/m22. That it would require a 5 spd etc. IDK im not going to be drag/racing it or building it into a show diva/cruiser, or a drag car. Just trying to figure out how streetable the 396 can be...or if its even worth my time building into, when something more modern and a more mild cam is more ideal for these cali traffic/filled streets. Considering thats why i want to do some sort of a track oriented build centered around the 396 solid lifter...get a "classic" race car type of build/performance. Sure id like to have it in a period/correct build and factory/ss parts utilized to get an ideal 1:1 build and pull it at the strip to see how it really was back in the good ol days...the cost/aspects seem to divert me from that concept, and i feel id rather get more miles driven/fun out of it if i just do a TRACK oriented build, or turn it into a cruiser or use it for some air bagged truck. Still doesnt seem like it does the engine justice i want it to live/die reving through gears on longer "PULLS" than 1/8th miles. The streets and drag strip doent seem that hospitable to the 396 solid lifter l78. From what ive seen ppl go to a different cam/lifters and go the 402 rout for a more reliable/power. I just want something that would be considered translated to a person doing a ss396 camaro/nova into a roadcourse/track trans am build of that era.... displacement/restrictions aside.
@andola Jackson I don’t think you can go wrong with a 70 Chevelle with a 396 or a 454. A lot of people are also going the LS route which is also good choice from a power and drivability perspective, however, I like seeing an old school big block under the hood of a 70 Chevelle. If I was representing any car company being accused of “unintended acceleration” I would show the jury a video of the black Camaro’s burnout. Clearly if the driver has his or her foot on the brake, the car isn’t going anywhere. Of course the jury would probably still rule against the car company because, well, basically people are stupid.
@Jeff Spicolli Brakes were still holding the car back, though, and just the front brakes. Which is what he was saying. There have been loads of cases where people's cars accelerated and they swore they had their foot on the brake and it wouldn't stop. Which is 100% impossible. Can't accelerate with your foot on the brake. It might barely move, at best with newer front wheel drives, but not with rear wheel drive which is where it all started. It was usually older people with bigger luxury cars like Lincolns and Caddys that it happened to.

The short spoiler was used until the S.C.C.A approved the taller 3 piece spoiler for the Trans America racing series, The Trans Am series was the reason the Z 28 was created in the first place, remember? . Another hint that this is a 1970 Camaro is the separate headrest on the front seats. Starting in 1971 both the Camaro, and the Pontiac Firebird had a one piece seat back.
I have a 1970 z28 RS with factory drive train it is so powerful it will put you in the back seat taking off. It never seems to top out it's clocked for 150 mph it will bary the needle so fast it just keeps climbing. This video is a joke these 1970 z28 cars are factory built race cars...

I had a 71 Z/28, once the original Z motor blew, I put a built 350 with a m-22 and 4.88 gears, I still wake up in cold sweats dreaming about that car.

LT1 was underrated from factory too, I think all engines from that period were underrated, some more than others.

The 70 was taken to a different direction. Was made for handling had much better suspension than the 67-69
