In 2003, the closure of Cannon Mill in Kannapolis, North Carolina, was the single largest mass layoff in the state's history. The City of Kannapolis’s downtown suffered and shuttered after the layoff. Today, downtown Kannapolis is a vibrant hub of community and growth.
Longtime residents of Kannapolis and the local government who wanted to revitalize the town consulted experts at the UNC School of Government’s Development Finance Initiative to provide guidance on the redevelopment of the downtown. See how DFI's efforts supported the city of Kannapolis to create a bustling, walkable downtown.
