I grew up in Manhattan Beach between Hawthorne and Hermosa Beach. One day in 1980 I was washing my car in my parents driveway and I look up to see the McDonald bros walking to the church in Hermosa to practice and hang out with Black Flag. I yelled Redd Kross and they both waved and said "hi".
I've loved Redd Kross since I was a teenage punk rocker so got to meet them and hang out a few times (pretty easy to do when they're small club shows), we also had some friends in common. I took Jeff & Steve to a local used record store ad they were totally in their element. Later on when I was a music journalist I interviewed them for a national magazine so that was kinda cool too. Never a problem getting on guest lists either. They were really awesome people! Steve is basically the same as he was then - still the same sense of humor and how he tells his stories. I'm so happy for him, finding true love & becoming a parent! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!
Holy crap, what a deep and meaningful interview; as a parent I was in tears hearing Steven talk about being a parent. I used to love Redd Kross but now I love them just a bit more.
Love this guy in interviews! Spoke to him briefly before an OFF! show in Baton Rouge, with Dale playing drums for that particular tour, nice chap. Dale also was nice. Great musicians, those people
Falling James didn't write the riff to Cover Band/Live Fast Die Young. I wrote it in a high school band that I founded with Falling James, Manfred Hofer and Jesse Hoffs. Greg Hetson joined the band for a month or two during the summer of ''78, I think. Here is a recording of us practicing with Hetson on guitar at The Masque, shortly after it closed. soundcloud.com/kdsalter/civilization
brings out a lot of feelings and memories for me since i grew up in an la suburb, glendale, 60s and 70s and somewhat involved with music if not as directly
I'm posting this here cause comments are turned off for this video ruclips.net/video/fDmX4cK0cLM/видео.html but in the Fall of 1986, my roommates and I were watching MTv when that PSA comes on, and one my roommates said "hey, that guy looks just like you" cause I had the same hair style & color as Jeff. (They also said I looked just like the kid in the "Peace Sells" video that keeps changing TV channel when his father wants to watch the news for the same reason). I had no idea who this "Redd Kross" was, but maybe 6 months later, I saw a copy of "Neurotica" at Waterloo Records and remembered the band's name from the PSA, so I bought the album on that alone. and the rest, as they say, is history. So that PSA _was_ beneficial... to me, at least.

My favorite show ever was Jellyfish opening for Redd Kross at the Cactus Club in San Jose
That must have been amazing. Jellyfish is one of my favorite bands. I was able to see them 5 times on the Spilt Milk tour in Texas and NOLA.
Steven is indeed a legend
Very solid human being..
Ha! I did not expect to share something really cool with Mr. Steven McDonald. X, was also my first live band experience at the Whisky(1980). Cool
Can't believe Atlantic dropped Redd Kross after Third Eye...one of their best albums!!
more 80s punk/hardcore legends ASAP!
Awesome!

Absolutely love this interview!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love.
The "party" metaphor in reference to parenthood is perfect.
Such a solid guy with a pleasant personality!
Kind of guy you'd want sitting at the dinner table with you & your parents.
Drivin' down the highway in my Trans-am, custom...
Awesome
They didn't know it'd be the slums of the future. Prophetic.
Red Kross 💖💖💖💖💖💖
top drawer interview! likeable, sincere, no ego. (minor criticism : how often is he going to say "a track [sic] of homes"?!! TRACT!).
Killer...thanks Eric

He hooked up with mary kay letourneau at 12 years old: 26:00
Nah, the woman who "kidnapped" him was much older than MKL..
Um...this is fantastic...
Hawthorne is THE rockNroll capital of the world, thanks to Brian Wilson;; & in the early 80s the McDonald bros.

Let's bogue.
