  • Lots of humor with the whole band on this one. How to arrange and create dynamics in your band that help to create an atmosphere for worship? The band demonstrates how to spread out the sound and take advantage of the dynamic range - The bass, guitar, drums, and keys demonstrate how to create dynamics. Michael Rossback, Ben Gowell, Carl Albrecht, and Jared Anderson. How to use loops and stems. We discuss "the humility of restraint".

Paul and the band have a really clear way of breaking down the different instruments and the roles they play. A lot of worship leader videos out there frankly don't know how to break it down this well -- they just focus on talking about it in conceptual terms. Well done guys -- please keep these coming!

Hey Paul, loved revisiting the video again! Such a great reminder about dynamics of songs. I love how the bass player described it…”don’t give too much away at the beginning.” Such a great description of how to build a song. Thanks!

    1. dynamic range
    bass : low octave
    keyboard: mid range
    acoustic: higher octave
    electric: lowest or highest
    2. Dynamic energy
    low energy (verse)
    building up at prechorus
    high energy during chorus
Restraint with the 🎹 mid-range.. starts with a sustaining sound... since the others are playing rhythmically ...
won't commit to a lot of triads ... as it builds to chorus.. you build in inversions... raise up the resonator as the energy level goes up
Electric guitar creates space for the vocals
    Don't conflict with the vocals
When the vocal is sustained... that's when the electric guitar or any part could do some melodical riffs

It depends on your church's ways, in our church we have a theme every month in which the speaker/pastor will base on what he preach and the message of the theme will also be the base of our praise and worship lineup.

Paul, I would love to talk to you someday. The internet has been mostly good for musicians but there are some inherent problems and I think it is important to consider them especially in a setting like this. For instance, I agree that teams and leaders should listen to the worship music that they may be playing but often they will be listening to a professional group with a "performer" leading. This is not often how the team will be worshiping and in fact should not be how they do it. Professional worship teams always have a celebrity, like it or not. I have been involved in worship for almost 50 years and this celebrity based music is not what I would consider appropriate for most worship teams. I am not trying to take a wake from the excellence of your music or your performance I'm just saying it is not Ideal for most churches and is not really a Biblical model. Christ should be the celebrity but people buy worship songs featuring their favorite leader. That's OK but what I am seeing is this performance mentality sneaking into church worship because all the popular teachers online are performers. And what about the Spirit where does He come in. When rules are to tight they become legalism and that brings bondage. People on church teams can spend more time trying to remember all the things you told them. If they are doing that then it is hard led by the spirit. They are worrying, am I playing to many notes, am I in the proper dynamic and so on and so on. I am very serious abut these things and have so much more I wish I could say. But first of all I say to you Paul Baloche, I have loved your music for years and you were giving away charts and instructional videos before anyone, could you try and trust God a little in this thing? If God leads me in a certain way musically could you trust Him. My group onetime went to lead worship in a small church in Southern California and before we played they did a couple of songs themselves. The pastor sat in the middle of this Quonset hut with a boom box and three young ladies sang each with their own mike. The boom box must have fallen or something because the music was speeding up and slowing down and the ladies voices were much less than perfect but the people in that church jumped to their feet and with big smiles began to love Jesus with all their heart. What if something doesn't sound perfect if some young man or lady gets to give the best that they have to offer. Their is obviously a place for what you teach as I said I love your music. I'm just afraid that it is not in most churches. I have seen the really talented leader, often a guitar player, make the team revolve around them telling other musicians not to play so much mostly so everyone can hear how hard they worked on that guitar part. I personally would love to see less performance and more Spirit led worship. In many of these bands everyone but the leader lives in bondage to the ideal that they may do something wrong. I would like to see people offering what they got and a leader that can deal with the situations that are not about good worship on an individual basis. Like it or not your music will always be pr seeded by the need to make money and that makes you a little different than us. God Bless You my brother

Hi brother, I really appreciate your thoughts on this, and would love to talk to Paul someday too! I have also struggled (and to some extent still do) with this perfection mentality that seems to be driven in some of the worship culture we are seeing today. While I am not Paul and cannot speak for him, I personally didn't hear him saying that worship teams "must" do these things, but rather giving insight to help make a worship team sound more full and also operate together well. Again, I agree, there can be a level of perfectionism in the church today that is unhealthy. However, I truly believe that while level of skill doesn't need to be an issue, that Scripture does say to have a service that is orderly, especially as God is not a God of confusion, but of order. I think that is the Godly motivation for wanting excellence in worship, which can absolutely done by faith.
I'm sorry if you have experienced the unhealthy, "legalistic" culture that demands to get things right. I have been involved in many different worship teams (definitely less than most!) and have encountered teams where there is a perfection element. I do think, though, that God can be glorified by excellence. With that, having this excellence in worship I believe is another way to be Spirit led. In fact, this is a way spiritual giftings are used, by those who have leadership and administrative giftings that help the worship team to excel. Now, that doesn't mean every church will operate this way, my point here is that there are those who seek perfection in worship and God will sanctify them, and there are those who out of worship of Christ, seek order in worship leading in their giftings. Lastly, and thank you for reading this if you have read this far! I want to understand, agreeing that God can be worshipped both with little and with much, what if it "is the Spirit" that leads these worship teams who have a high level of skill? I'm curious what you think about those who genuinely worship the Lord with their hearts and talents, and part of that is trusting the Lord to sound great? By no means do I want to communicate to be argumentative, just curious what you think. Again, thanks for reading and God bless you! :)

@J_a_k_e388 I have been through an excel to Bible College with a major in worship theology I’ve learned from and played with some of the most talented musicians in the country half of them are the musicians from the Hosanna series of worship albums. I’m talking about horns and strings and woodwinds and pianos, and once in a while even a guitar player but not always leading. I’m not trying to brag I was barely good enough to play with them once in awhile. I say that just so you understand that I know what talented musicianship is like. I am for it when you hear a trumpet call out loud and clear in a song that announces the appearing of Christ or a string section in a soft part like watch the lamb. it’s wonderful but I could use those things as necessary and it might leave your team out I don’t know. But that is not at all what I meant. I would like to suggest that knowing me better read my post again and I think you will have a better Idea what I am saying. I don’t disagree with you. You can probably see this is a subject that I care deeply about. There are a lot of people, some of them very talented but as they jump on the praise wagon, they are sometimes a little misguided. Legalism breeds bondage always Interpret as you like. I should also mention that for a year, my wife and I just the two of us singing and me on guitar were the whole worship team at Calvary Chapel Hollywood. Yes, that Hollywood. So in approximately 45 years I have experienced a lot of types of worship. My concern is now that so much is offered on line it is taught by a celebrity or want to be a celebrity, and their thoughts and ideas are affected by that
